Expanding NATO was the best decision we could have made. You think if the Russians had won the Cold War they would not have expanded west? When We defeated the Germans in 1945 didn’t the soviets expand further west? Just fair then, that these three parts of Ukraine either became independent, or part of Russia itself, decided upon with referendums. Ukrainians denied them this, and here we are in a big war. It`s not black and white but mostly grey I would say, from an objective point of view. I am a democrat, a libertarian, a person that think people should decide for themselves what they want, if any region in any part of any country wants to be independent or become part of another country they should. Why does "the west" think that it`s ok for Taiwan to be an independent country (yes there is a majority of the people there that wants to) but not the same rule for Crimea, Luhansk and Donbas??
