It was one of the most remarkable elections the UK has ever seen, with both Labour and Tories suffering historically abysmal results.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The results of last week’s EU elections are in: Nigel Farage's new Brexit Party topped the poll with nearly 32%. And the Liberal Democrats came second with 20%, their best ever result in a European Election.
But what does it mean? And how will these results affect Brexit?

No they didn't. That's a ridiculous statement. However, if their matches was friendlies, they wouldn't have won the premiership - which is why an advisory referendum cannot be forced on us as a mandatory 'people's vote.' Pressure from the Mail, Express, Sun and Telegraph and frothing from the mouth by Brexiter MPs including calling judges 'traitors' scared politicians (who you will remember had a member assassinated in cold blood by a right-wing Brexit supporting terrorist a few weeks before). Regardless of Farage frothing at his mouth about Cameron said the government will implement the result, Camoron resigned and regardless, Cameron does not make the law. He can't change it on his whim. The Tories said they would implement Brexit - and they have spent 80 billion pounds so far doing nothing - but that can still democratically be changed by a government without being anti-democratic or by a mandatory referendum.

Stupid analogy, no deal Brexit was not on menu, badly constructed referendum Farage deliberately caused confusion into what leave eu was about, that’s why he constantly said they would be on their knees begging for a deal. Well they are no! So as Farage wanted parliament to take back control they have and they cannot come to agreement other than to say no majority for a no deal. So either general election until parole then can coalesce around a Brexit policy or back to people simple (not) but that’s the mess Brexit referendum has got us into, should never have happened!

Well this was well and truly the tories idea, and only they should take the whole blame for the whole process since Cameron officially called tgr referendum and for any post Brexit carnage. After Vote leave were guilty of corruption during the referendum swinging it Leave's way, Corbyn should have put a halt to persuing a hard Brexit albeit not quite as extreme as the tories version, and instantly demanded a second referendum but his fears of brexit slipping away have forced him to hold back. Corbyn had nothing to do with the vote leave, yet still been trying to persue even after Leave were found guilty of corruption.. He looks like he wants a hard brexit albeit with a customs union, and seen to be doing so but doesn't want to admit it in public for fear of losing labour remain support, but he fears a second referendum. Corbyn certainly wouldn't want to be fronting Remain in any second referendum, but would be under extreme pressure from the unions to do so even though he clearly wants to leave. The unions are for Remain. He can't merge in the background second time around.

May takes her half assed deal to parliament in the meantime the parliament passes a bill taking no deal off the agenda EU negotiators must have been over the moon on that one. Then May delays Brexit we're forced into EU elections Brexit party win most seats another message from the people even with only a 36% turn out and you can be sure that the vast majority of remainers came out to vote for the Lib Dems or the Green party. So now we have Nigel Farrage and the Brexit party linking with other like minded parties in the EU so even if we by some slight of hand are forced into another referendum to overturn the democratic result of Brexit Brexiteers will be a thorn in the side of the EU and our Parliament. @@barbosaguzman6101 Irish border is one, the Good Friday agreement requires both sides to be on equal footing. Brexit fundamentally breaks that, but that wasn't discussed in the referendum at all! The UK has many laws in place to ensure ease of flow between the UK and the EU, no deal brexit for example renders them inactive, causing issues of how to get these laws to work. there are 2-3 millions EU citizens living in the UK, and without knowing the degree of Brexit, what do we do with them? Especially so many of them work on our farms, doing the work the average Brit finds beneath them. Brexit also changes intelligence sharing between the UK and EU, to help stop crime. Do we stop sharing intelligence on any level, if so how much? Do we want a customs union or a single market or both? If so should we get access without paying? Or do we go hard brexit and deny ourselves lower costing trade with better quality of food and goods. We also need to discuss our immigration policy for entering and leaving the country. Do we want more or less? What is the longest time someone from the EU can comes to the UK before it's classed as living? Funny thing is if we leave the EU and get a trade deal with them for say food, we'll have to follow their food standards, especially when exporting to them. Therefore, we would still be beholding to them to some degree, though we wouldn't have a say on how these standards are changed because we'd have left the EU. If we left the EU and got a deal with the USA, the Americans want us to buy their lower quality goods, which means we'd have to have an agreement with the EU that maps out how we'd stop these poor quality goods from entering the EU. There is so much more, and i so much more. But you get the idea.

Let's try and correct your analogy. It's like saying that the MPs of London can out-vote the MPs of the North-West. Which they can - the reason being that there are more of them. If all the MPs in the North West were to demand brexit, they could not force it on the majority. Does that make sense? Pro-brexit parties got 35% of the vote. Do you understand that 35% is less than half?

As Sir John Curtice, Britain's leading political polling expert, said today on BBC Today, the assertion that remainers came out ahead is nonsense. The Brexit party and UKIP are one issue parties, so you can be clear what they think, the same is true of CHUK on the remain side. However, polls show about a third of SNP voters would vote for Brexit in a referendum. There are large numbers of those who voted Labour and Conservative in this election who would vote also vote to leave in a second referendum, and indeed even small numbers in the Greens and Lib Dems who would do so. The Channel 4 graph ignored Northern Ireland voters all together (although mentioned later). Bottom line is all the evidence actually shows the issue is still about 50:50; in which case the the 2016 referendum stands. Channel 4 are drawing conclusions that polling experts and political scientists simply do not support. Clearly, like Michael Gove back in 2016, they have had enough of 'experts'.

Lets not pretend that the Green Party was about Brexit when it was absolutely about the environment. The truth is that remain are much more divided. It’s taken many individual parties; already established parties to get to the same level as the Brexit party which is weeks old. Each of those parties have their own spending budgets and ability to reach more people than the resources of a party weeks old. If it was; as you attempt to compare it too, a yes or no equivalence that would mean a no vote would have been backed by more than the legal amount of campaign funding. So this is not accurate to equate all three parties scores together. Unless of course you wouldn’t mind pro leave parties overspending on campaigning?
@iknowrstank
@iknowrstank 5 жыл бұрын
intempify do you think you can make an argument without dismissing the intelligence of your opposition? I’m not a dolt, whatever that is 😂 The Green parties across Europe made significant gains because it’s the only party type effectively exclusively about the environment. This was not exclusive to the U.Ks Green Party. Even the leader of the Green Party has said most of their vote increase was because of the environment and not because of Brexit. It’s a false equivalency. Why vote green for remain when you can choose Lib Dem’s? Yeah it’s for MEPs I’m fully aware of what the vote is. However, many news outs are spinning this as a win for remain and using it as an indicator as to say that there should be another referendum. I agree have the referendum, I would be willing to put everything I own betting on leave. I live in Scotland, my parents voted labour their entire life and voted remain. They would now vote leave in a second ref. They didn’t vote for the Brexit party. Yeah by some margin more parties exclusively more remain. However, and this is what you seem to have misunderstood is that, each party had a spending limit during campaigning. If you have 5 parties running on remain each with the same cap and 3 parties going as leave with the same cap that means more funding was available to remain. In a referendum, that would be illegal. If it were a binary choice, which in this case it wasn’t. So you cannot equate this to a similar situation in a referendum. The maths doesn’t allow for it. This doesn’t take into consideration that a referendum would also have higher turnout which can change results as shown by the first referendum. Where the polls got it wrong, because many people voted who hadn’t before so polls in that instance were inaccurate. There’s also plenty of people who didn’t vote in the EU elections because in their mind it should never have occurred again. So you see now why the £25 donation fund towards the Brexit campaign wasn’t not that point I was making. How they get the money is a separate issue, it’s the amount they’re allowed to spend individually during campaigning. There is no need to call me a dolt. That exactly why nobody can have reasonable discussion on this issue. Get your heart out of the issue and your head into it instead.

bring back all the old currencies? Europe has always been sane and will always be sane. Don't mixup EU with Europe Google showed several results this is one of them "Difference between Europe and European Union" When we speak of Europe, therefore, we refer to a geographical territory and to all the countries that make up this continent whereas European Union refers to the countries that are part of this political entity and that have to respond to it. The term "Europe" is sometimes used to refer to the European Union, and this is quite wrong because not all the countries of Europe are part of the European Union (Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine, etc.) . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- tons of texts to be found on the internet, featuring images and much more regarding this difference between Europe and European Union. Anyway the Dutch have a 4,5 or 6 party Govt. , and many small parties to vote for. It seems its not limited to a "2" party sytem, lots of coices can be made :D

I thought that's the way elections worked the party that wins ...wins, we don't normally tot up the other parties and say the winner didn't win. Also Conservative was running as a Brexit party which means they won even with ch 4 ridiculous calculations.
@MS-19
@MS-19 2 жыл бұрын
The weird thing about the EU elections is that - in a manner of speaking - nobody wins, because there is no national party that can gain a majority of seats by itself in the EU Parliament. That Parliament is elected by Proportional Representation, meaning that percentages signify more than they do in the UK General Elections, e.g. February 1974, in which the Conservatives had the largest percentage of the vote but didn't win the most seats. So, it makes more sense in the context of an EU election to tot up votes and analyse them in terms of rationale ("who was right, who was left, who was leave, who was remain" etc.) than it would be in a UK Election. Not that it's going to be an issue any more, of course, with Brexit ultimately having happened.... 😉

Farages only goal was to take us out of the EU thats why he won the EU elections. When we leave our MEPs will never take their seats in Brussels so who needs policies and manifestos?. Hes now recruiting 650 candidates for a General Election in which time he will have a manifesto but looking at Labour and the Tories they are not worth the paper they are printed on anyway.
