I'm a bit late in writing this as I've just got this version of the mouthsong Fionnghauala on You Tube after listening to the Bothy Band's version for years! Theirs is different than what Anuna sings and that is the problem: there are words to this song out there but you have to match the words to the right version of the song! I'm an American too and it took me years to dig this up as there were no computers to help me back then! I then ran into the fact that this was passed on by singers who took it to other singers and places where words were changed or mispronounced, (like the way New Yorker and a Tennessean don't say "can't' the same way) so there are different versions! Look up Colmhaltas Ceoltori Eirinn (a group that strives to preserve this type of music in Ireland) or email any of the bands that you have this from and see if you can get their version of it. There is one version on Google now but it's closer to The Bothy's version than this one. You might be able to fudge it though, as the words are very similar. Good luck! It's fun once you learn it!

your performance last wednesday in Utrecht was absolutely breathtaking (even though you didn't sing this one ;). my scottish partner and I started to learn Scottish Gaelic but didn't get any farther after the days of the week. we made a song with the words which really helped with remembering and pronounciation. I enjoyed this song. I also liked the way the travelers in Ireland and Scotland respected the bothy etiquette. Especially in the Highlands. It was a pleasure to hike all day and come upon a neat little place to sleep and stay warm for the night(without money). I was a poor student at the time, but wanted to see the Highlands. I've never enjoyed myself so much as back then. This is a great song. It has that Gaelic spirit. Wonderful people.

@seonaxus
@seonaxus 9 жыл бұрын
tcoudi Though divided into three broad "languages" based on country, the Goidelic languages show a great deal of local dialect differences and are in fact less so three separate languages as much as a language continuum, with speakers from different areas having more or less mutual intelligibility. For example, the name Fionnghuala alone may be pronounced "FÍ-on-gula", "Fyun-GHU-la", or "Fin-Ú-la" depending on dialect and accent. The modern spelling is Fionnuala in Modern Irish for example, which the group here would be more familiar with than the Scots Gaelic of the song.

Sorry guys cant even imagine how you can compare them to Bothy; Bothy's good and original, but THIS is music from Heaven! To most of the listeners (unfortunately not fluent in Gaelic) it is not a song with lyrics, but Voice Music, much more awesome than any instrument, and my oh my, Anuna do it justice! Thank you for posting it, you really made my and my Mom's day!!!!!!!! HUGS

So Anuna don't know what the words mean of a version that appears on 5 albums - including the Chieftains Tribute to Derek Bell [Paddy Moloney must have got it wrong when he asked them to perform it because Derek respected Anuna highly] - and a PBS special? I would suggest that you do a little research on Anuna. The Bothy's version of this is wonderful. The text was adapted in order for it to be sung at great speed. Next question...
