Brian Josephson - Can ESP Reveal a New Reality?

Күн бұрын

If ESP can claim some kind of truth, the implications would be profound. The confirmation of any ESP, no matter how minor, would challenge the materialism-physicalism structure of the world, built over centuries by science. Reality itself would expand. But extraordinary claims, such as for ESP or parapsychology, require extraordinary evidence.

I’m glad you’re glad Kirk but not all ideas are equal. Add the word "quantum" to any discussion and you "solve" any problem with the paranormal. You see this across this whole phenomenon. "Quantum" becomes a universal solvent, a universal solution, metaphorically. Say it, and you can act like you've proven your case. I'm not buying it....

I believe the ESP research, but not sure quantum coherence really explains the phenomenon. Mental activity is most likely not reducible to our current understanding of physical laws. This does not make it “paranormal,” it just means we don’t understand what “normal” is.

@@gyozakeynsianism why don’t you start with this meta analysis (you do know what that is, right?): “The Experimental Evidence for Psi Phenomena: a review (2018), in American Psychologist, 73(5).
@gyozakeynsianism
@gyozakeynsianism 2 жыл бұрын
@@danzigvssartre Oh, I'm obviously too dumb to know anything about meta analysis, except that it's very easy to manipulate by including or not including certain studies, and that it doesn't guarantee that the data analysis on the aggregated data will be any better than what went on beforehand. Which is probably why parapsychologists love them so much. What is new is its being published in a reputed journal, but the last time that happened (Bem's 2011 paper) the work fell apart upon scrutiny (people who are not parapsychologists apparently aren't very good at replicating the effects). And before we get lost in a discussion about the reproducibility crisis in mainstream experimental psychology, let's remember that the crisis is that the true effects are smaller, not larger, than the ones reported in academic articles. That's the scandal.
@danzigvssartre
@danzigvssartre 2 жыл бұрын
@@gyozakeynsianism Most meta analysis takes into account the "file drawer effect." This hackneyed argument against parapsychology is done and dusted. Problems with replication are endemic to psychology, because human psychology and behaviour is complex and dependent on a wide number of contextual variables. What works for physics experiments doesn't always work quite so well for psychology. Your statement about "true effects" is just odd. What in hell do you mean by "true effects" being larger or smaller? For the most part, effect sizes have always been pretty small in parapsychology, but then again, for psychology in general, effect sizes are usually quite small too. Again, this is because of the complexities of human psychology and behaviour. Construct validity and re-test reliability has always been pathetic in psychology when compared with the so-called "hard sciences."
@gyozakeynsianism
@gyozakeynsianism 2 жыл бұрын
@@danzigvssartre The problem of replication is not about human nature, it's about the incentives of investigators to tip the scales. This is most present in experiments, in psychology, economics, and elsewhere, where the investigator has lots of control over the design of the experiment, the selection of the subjects, and other variables. Solving these issues is expensive. The "true" effect (maybe I should put that in quotation marks) is the thing we are trying to measure, as opposed to the measurement itself. This is common parlance in statistical inference. You're upset, and maybe you should ask yourself why.

Robert goes in circles a bit here. Basically there’s a heat regulation that translates into actualized events. Once you change your thermal energy, the world changes. That’s why breathwork has always been synonymous with mysticism, meditation, and spirituality. It could manifest as a small paranormal occurrence or it can be a grand regional or world event. And since the world is actually “many worlds” happening at once, everyone is in their own world, leaving the paranormal to be an isolated phenomenon to the singular observer. Hence why it’s so elusive. If you spent 5 minutes with me, for example, I could show you a paranormal trick that will clear up all the misconceptions. But in order for that to happen, it would only exist in my world when you enter it, and vice versa. After that, there’s not even a guarantee that you’ll continue to exist in the same world after you witness it. Theoretically , that would happen based on “my” reality. The person who continues that path of truth will continue on into the multiverse. This is why ppl drift away from each other without sensible reasoning. We’re all on a highway of moving worlds, shifting btwn truths and versions of ourselves discovering those truth every moment of our existence.

Or maybe you have wandered into a false multiverse where you have just made up a bunch of malarky that makes no sense physically, rationally or scientifically, and all your friends leave you because they can’t understand how you could think that! Your brain is more powerful than any computer in the world - but it is designed to make stuff up - fill in the gaps, project future possibilities etc, but if you fail to test those ideas, many if not most of which are likely to be wrong, you will find yourself in a world of unreality.

Yet they are in relation to triggered paths that relate to that subject matter. This is how we end up with differences on what different folks accept as truth. In some cases the paths are so strong that they won't allow perfect evidence that is perfectly explained. It's great fun to speculate, but what's the point if we don't actually have dependable evidence of the things we're speculating about? Sometimes, extraordinary claims only require ordinary evidence--and there is zero ordinary evidence for ESP, let alone extraordinary evidence. I'm actually glad Kuhn did this interview. Neither solves the problems presented. Physicalists ignore statistical anomalies. But even efforts like idealism to replace the ontology have no practical application. Supposedly this is to be expected. Ontologies make no unique predictions but is the ground or source from which everything else is known. But surely a new ontology would be distinct from a separate ontology since a new way of thinking should lead to new ways of understanding? Wouldn't idealism imply life after death of some type but physicalisms only after life is manifested through technological singularity?

There is, for the most part, a consistent scientific approach and model to those fields that simply does not exist in the realm of the "paranormal". I appreciate that this channel at least explores the possibility of alternate theories of reality and rather than dismissing any alternate theory outright; providing a forum for exploring the cutting edge would allow a fertile discussion to grow. If the seed of "truth" is sterile or lacking substance, it will not grow. If there is substance to it, allow it to mature. Only through rigorous and methodical investigation can truth be discerned from fiction. That process is easy when we are dealing with accepted truths because we have a starting place not far from our investigation. Consciousness can help translation, but is it enought? What ability would make a perfect translator? Clearly esp is good for translating thoughts but can it read the intentions of rocks, or dirt or fire? Clearly consciousness is not esp, but the revealing question is: in what way(s)? Throughout my life I have experienced dreams that have come true by the next day sometimes sooner. Most of the time it's bad occurrences, but sometimes good. A few times i have told others and have been shunned, avoided and questioned. Can I make it happen, no! But when it does, its different than other dreams, and sometimes it's just a constant image or picture in my mind. Just because you can't experience it doesn't mean I don't. Unfortunately the con artists and the like haven't helped science and the public perception and myself included at times. My father was a dowser who would use a willow stick to find water for local farmers, he never missed. I was very skeptical until I tried it. I was very science fact based growing up, but changed quickly when these things started happening. I became a loner because of it, but turned 65 a few months ago and find myself needing to find others who have experienced this and at least talk to others. As far as skeptics, I don't see any proven science facts for how reality exists! That doesn't stop me from living it or trying to under stand it.

I have experienced the same thing. It's usually a short dream, like literally a couple of seconds. My dreams are always of something mundane, like a man walking out of the door of a grocery store. The next day I will see the _exact_ thing I dreamed of. Also, mine are from my perspective, looking out of my eyes, never from a third person or bird's eye perspective. I should also say that my normal dreams are always vivid and in color, but these dreams are always sort of washed out, like an old photograph. I'm only 29, but I'm still glad to hear that someone else has experienced this as well.

@@spracketskooch mine started when I was about 10 yrs old. I used to raise pigeons that had freedom of flight till evening then they roosted in a large pen that I built for protection. One night I drempt that something killed all my pigeons. Their wings, and body parts were all over the ground in the pen. I woke up about day light with the dream still bothering me. I got the feed ready for them and as I came round to the pen, I saw all my pigeons dead and all the body parts as was in my dream exactly. Years later in high school I had a dream that I rolled my father's jeep in the middle of a road in an accident. I made sure the next day that I took my father's car. I always car pooled with a friend and I told him about my dream. We laughed it off and he commented it was a good thing we took my dad's car. In the afternoon we always went to a vocational school and as we were getting into the car to leave, my father pulled up withe the jeep. He said he needed the car and I was to take the jeep. I argued with him but he was in a hurry and handed me the jeep keys and took the car. We tried to laugh it off didn't say much as I drove. About half way to the school while topping a hill I hit ice, spun out of control and rolled the jeep in the middle of the road landing on its side. We got out and my friend was running around screaming that I was possessed. Some class mates pulled up help us push the jeep back onto its wheels. My friend told them about my dream and they all got into their car and left me to fend to myself. After that no one at school would have much to do with me. These still occur since then today. Just like you, mine are from my perspective. How about yourself?

I think there is a difference between the connective feasibility of processed rational information , and subjective subconscious Information. Two people yawning is a transfer of information. @@EstraNiato well i could start with some good literature for you, if you'd like, and trust me, there won't be in anything there by daniel dennett that's for sure! start by reading dr pim van lommel's book consciousness beyond life. a scientific look into consciousness and quantum mechanics. good luck, and keep an open mind, mr ED closed-mind!

People see and hear things which is very hard to explain simply because our grip on the subjective is very poor...which has a lot to do with group tendencies to redicule the subjective (partly because stuff like honesty and conscience are not popular). In individual lives such out of the ordinary things always happen in context..a persons life, a situation in such persons life which at its core can not be taken out of context and researched scientifically. What can be said about the paranormal is those are for the most part likely psychological phenonema like psychological defects or stuff like UFO sightings increasing substantialy when Spielberg movie Close Encounters Of the Third Kind was in the cinema. Also all sort of hallucinations/delusions weak and strong over time are a normal part of all peoples lives.
