You are absoloutly right , I admire many skaters but he is the one who touches my heart and soul like nobody else , And I feel he didn't get the praise he deserves as a skater because the media somehow wanted him to always be in Boitano's shadows

@@rosalindsimmons3802You are absolutely right and nothing has changed, that's the terrifying thing. Someone who jumps every jump 4 times wins. The technical is valued higher, although it affects the majority of people much less than the artistic Expression.

So happy there is someone who admires the artistic side of this sport which I believe is what sets figure skating apart from other sports , And Brian Orser for me was a special artist who had a beautiful music interpretation and a sincerity and pureness that you rarely see in others , so bad the media Ignored that and focused mainly on triple triple combinations and quads ...

Such unique footwork and he pulled off many of the triples with short set ups(very spontaneous). The battle of the Brian's was probably the most exciting showdown in figure skating history. And we must note that it was harder back then because they had to skate figures as well.

While I would have picked Boitano first, I still think Orser was a very close second. His footwork was impeccable and his musical interpretation first rate.

oh geez no way was this better technically or artistically - I just watched them both back to back - Boitano's reached way further down in emotion and even had better edges and grace, hands down technical to Boitano who did 2 triple axles and a triple flip-triple toe combo and 8 total triples to Orser's 7, although he fell out of the triple flip and was waaaay over on that last toe loop.

This was a beautiful program from brian orser. even though I'm canadian, I would have to give Boitano the gold because it looked cleaner. Orser had magnificent artistry, but those 2 mistakes were crucial. Out of his 1984 or 1988 program, I liked the 1984 one better. They were at war with each other all right. Battle of the Brians.

Does anyone see the quality of body line in jumps that is so superior on Boitano and no one mentioned that Boitano had a triple combo as well as two triple axels, he should have gotten 6.0 for technical merit, and artisitically he had some flat moments in the program where he could have done a little more I think, but the simplicity of the program added to the elegance of it
@metsdudenj
@metsdudenj 16 жыл бұрын
completely agree, people thought Orser would win because Boitanos programs sucked in 87 when he lost, and I too thought at the time that he had no chance to beat Orser because I really felt he could only skate to Cheezy Show tunes, but when he reinvented himself, he eclipsed Orser, he became a more techincallly perfect, artistic, skater with a masculine edge as well, which showed the soldier part well. I thought Boitano deserved 6.0 and 5.9 for his LP, and Order 5,8 and 5.9 for the same.

Brian Orser was a great champion of the sport, and this performance is incredibly strong, even with the missed flip and only one triple axle. There are moments in the program when it's frankly superior to Boitano's...the first segment after his opening triple lutz is dramatic, beautifully choreographed, and intensely interesting. His triple axle is astonishing. I think it's silly to insist that this performance was over marked.

I liked both of the Brians and even though I'm American, I was kind of hoping Orser would win - had Scotty Hamilton not done better in the compulsory figures, Orser would have won gold in 1984. His short program and free skate were much better than Scott's. But I was glad both Brians skated so well that night.

My heart is torn for Orser. Both equally deserved the gold as they traded World Championships 1986-1987. Boitano is one of the greatest ever but I admire Orser for the adversities he went through and dealing with being betrayed by his lover. Orser has more artistic flair but Boitano is usually clean as a whistle on ice. The 88 Calgary Olympic Battle of the Brians ranks among the greatest rivalries in sport. Also, both are very beautiful. In another life they might have been lovers.

Whew, it's amazing how negative some of the remarks about Orser are here after all these years. It's almost 20 years and some people are still going on and on about how they think the competition never should have been judged so closely because Boitano was so much better. Others still see the Battle of thee Brians as a very close competition with some of the best Olympic men's skating ever. In any case, Orser has more than proven since that his skating and class is second to none.

Whole thing set up for Orser to win but Boitano was so much better they had to give it to him and barely did they. Orser's music and jumping all the same throughout the program while Boitano changed throughout with different motifs. Boitano also had the spread eagle and was artistically more interesting. It really wouldn't have been close if he hadn't been American but, let's say, Russian.

@dsfddsgh I don't agree sorry. I think Boitano was far more artistic. I always preferred Boitano's smooth classical style to Orser's pumpy pumpy bouncy style. Boitano's short programme to Les Patineurs was a masterpiece of choreography and he should have beaten Orser in that section as well. In Calgary it should not have been so close because Boitano was head and shoulders better. Give it time. The Russians ruled forever, remember, but it took them quite awhile to develop their men's program. The U.S. was streaky - produced lots of notable male skaters from 1948-1960 but it took another 24 years for an American man to win a gold medal.

I'm not sure why so many people insist Orser would've won if not for the step-out. True, the choreography is more vibrant here, but Orser is sloppy compared to Boitano. His spins are sloppy and he tilts a little even on his cleanly-landed jumps. Personally, his choreography was bit too frantic for me, and was not deeply moving. That's probably due to the upbeat nature of it compared to Boitano's. In any case, Boitano's skate left me feeling breathless. Orser was just pretty good.

The media made it all about the"Battle of the Brians", but the truth is the fix was in for Orser to win no matter how he skated. The fact that Boitano won in a so-called broken tie is one of the most telling examples of the corrupt 6.0 system. For years, the media and Orser himself made his loss all about missing the triple flip. The truth is Boitano crushed Orser's program technically with two triple axels, two triple flips, and a triple-triple combination, all of which Orser didn't do. In addition to missing the triple flip, Orser downgraded his second triple axel to a salchow and had a hard two-foot landing on his last triple. With respect to Orser, there was no way his score should have been anywhere near Boitano's. The reason the scores ended up so close was revealed about 10 years after the '88 Olympics. Boitano's coach, Linda Lever, shared the story in a video on YT entitled "Brian Boitano 2016". I think her comments came in at about the 17-minute mark. She shared that she and Boitano were at a rink in Europe somewhere when they were approached by a Russian man. He wanted to meet Boitano and said he had something to share with him. It turned out this man was on the judging panel at the '88 Olympics. He said straight out that agreements were made beforehand for Orser to win. He was to be the big hero, winning Canada's first men's gold on home ice. It was to be the event of the Olympics. However, the man said that after he watched Boitano skate his flawless program, he had to vote his conscience and do the right thing. So, he scored Boitano fairly and not as low as he was expected to. It was his score that "broke the tie" and gave Boitano his rightful gold medal. He said it was one of the greatest moments of his life. Back home, however, he was banned from the Soviet skating federation as a judge. True story, and Boitano being the class act he is never spoke of it. Of course, Orser had nothing to do with this, but it just speaks to the corruption of skating federations (that still exists today) and the old 6.0 system, which thankfully doesn't.

The last triple (toe loop I think ) did not look 2 footed to me , like how many insisted that Boitano's second triple axel wasn't 2 footed although it looked much more messy than this . Also you said that boitano was better technically you can see that nearly every judge placed him higher technically than orser while artistically orser was faster , has better transitions and did most of his jumps with almost no preperation unlike boitano who was much slower and took more time preparing well to jump and I believe this was what gave orser higher artistic marks ,so why the judging was that much PAINFULLY UNFAIR to you all ? and most importantly in the end it was boitano who won and orser was 2nd , so you (32 years later )are still pissed off at why he was a CLOSE second ?? And I don't like to imagine what the scores would have been had the olympics been in America because I already saw that in boitano's LP's technical marks in cincinnati 87 worlds !
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 4 жыл бұрын
@@rosalindsimmons3802 Even IF Boitano's second axel was two -footed, it makes zero impact on the fact that his program was far and way much more difficult than Orser's, which contained other errors and downgrades, even IF his last triple wasn't two-footed. Orser even admitted in the kiss & cry that he was running out of gas after the halfway point, which supports the assertion and the lazy appearance of his last triple that it was indeed two-footed. Boitano's choreography was also FAR more sophisticated than Orser's "puppet on a string" movements where he hopped around and danced on his heels, complete with knee-slap. (cringe.) The fact that his artistic marks were so high is a joke. 6.0? You could skate Boitano's program today and it wouldn't look about of place choreographically. You can't say that about Orser's. It hasn't aged well. Yes, Boitano was MUCH better technically, but Orser's tech scores were much too close to Boitano's because the judges were propping him up. Did you read my full post? Orser's scores were pre-planned because the judges were bought off, as admitted by the Russian judge to Boitano's coach, Linda Leaver, 15 years after the Calgary Olympics. Orser's scores here are FAKE, so there is no point in arguing marks. He is NOT being scored accurately but instead artificially inflated so he can win, but the Russian judge didn't go along with the plan, which gave Boitano his rightful gold. ALL the other judges were on the take. Disgusting. So arguing the marks here is pointless because the judges were compromised. With a fair and objective panel, Boitano would have been a mile ahead. Orser always had that ugly bent leg on his takeoffs with other technique problems. He was fast, but hardly the picture of an elegant, classic skater. Lots of bent arms and not a great bodyline. He couldn't possibly compare to the stately pose Boitano struck on the ice. You diminish the importance of the issue and miss the point by implying, "Well, Boitano won anyway, so what do you care?" It's because it's the principle of the matter. Boitano should have won by a mile, but the judges almost gave it to Orser politically. Boitano was robbed of a triumphant victory and the right to celebrate loudly and openly as the clear winner that he was. With it being deemed a "broken tie" the judges allowed Orser to save face for a lackluster program and put a damper on what was clearly a slam dunk for Boitano. A "broken tie" implies that you were "barely" better than the competition and in a sense, delegitimizes Boitano's victory, which in reality was a runaway win. A "broken tie" is basically a coin toss to determine the winner, and that disrespects Boitano's accomplishment. It's like saying he won on a technicality, yet it's down in the history books as a "broken tie". Ridiculous. The truth finally coming out about the Battle of the Brians, which turned out to be no battle at all but a worked-out backroom deal undone at the last minute, confirmed for many skating fans that they weren't crazy every time they looked at the scores from competitions through the 6.0 era and said...WTF? THAT'S why the so-called Battle of the Brians is still relevant today and not for the reasons most people think. It stands as the prime example of figure skating corruption at its worst, even in spite of the right skater winning in the end, which didn't happen 99% of the time back then.

Sorry but I don't agree with you , I can see that you are a big fan of Boitano but trying to make Orser look nothing compared to him is the real joke , Orser had a beautiful smooth jumps and a fast beautiful interpretations of his programmes and didn't have ugly bent legs as you think , for me I hughly prefer him to boitano who I didn't really like his style or related to his skating even before the BATTLE OF THE BRIANS , and when I saw his olympic LP in calgary I realized that he is a good athlete but wasn't really impressed by the programme and didn't see the idea and the story behind it ( It was later said that the programme was showing different stages of a soldier's life and this was the only time I knew it because his interpretation didn't help ) of course that's my openion but I don't hold anything against boitano , and even if orser's LP wasn't as good as Boitano's (technically I believe ) but he did a good job i believe better than many gold medal winning performances done by some others . and your point about the russian judge being the one who broke the tie ; first the story was that 3 judges chose boitano and 4 chose orser and 2 called it a tie , but those two both gave boitano the higher technical marks which was the tiebraker at that time and boitano won in a 5-4 split , that russian judge gave boitano 5.9/5.9 and orser 5.8/5.9 not that much a big difference , so if he believed boitano was much superior and did what he thought was right he could have scored orser much lower and boitano much higher if he didn't listen and didn't agree about the deal anyway , right ? he was just one of those three who chose boitano , and you said it yourself that Orser had nothing to do with this so he is not the one to be blamed for it , and you could see how that loss was bitter for him to this day and the media did a great job making orser looks like an idiot and amature compared to boitano . So there are two points I want to clear : I mentioned previously what happened in cincinnati when boitano with a missed quad and a missed 3flip scored technically much higher than orser's clean programme with 2 triple axels ?? Nobody said a single thing about this although it was a world championship !! And secondly orser and boitano has 2 different styles , you hugly prefer boitano and I hugly prefer orser , but saying orser had ugly jumps and a poppy style isn't appropriate at all , I don't think there is a single figure skating expert or fan will tell you that orser was an unworthy skater ,even boitano and his coach said they respected him so much as skater and as a champion and i'm sure everybody does , and also that rivality pushed boitano forward to develope his technique and artestry to beat orser who wasn't an easy competetor at all lastly Orser was very gracious in his reactions and tried really hard to keep it together at the podium so he won't ruin the moment for boitano , believe me in this situation you can rarely see someone do this so I think he deserves some respect rather than underrating and bad words .

@@rosalindsimmons3802 Of course you don't agree with me. So what's left to say? My comment was about the judging corruption at the '88 Olympics, which is TRUE. Orser's marks were inflated because the fix was in for him to win. That's a fact. The Russian judge was probably thinking that if he still inflated Orser but marked Boitano a fraction above, he might have a chance at saving his position with the Russian federation, but losing by 0.1 points or 100 points is all the same when the deal is pre-planned and someone backs out of it. Losing is losing, so the Russian suffered the consequences anyway. Additionally, since the other judges were already planning on giving Orser inflated marks, it wouldn't have looked good for the Russian judge to give him a 5.6 for technical, which is closer to what he should have received, because his mark would have been too far out of step with the others and called into question. So, he had to stay in the same ballpark as the other scores, while still giving Boitano the edge. I don't know why you're stuck on '87 Worlds because there was no judging collusion going on. Yes, we disagree with marks sometimes, but there was never any proven backroom dealing going on in Cincinnati, as there certainly was at the '88 Olympics. My comment and focus were only on that competition. Back to Orser's technique, he's tilted in his jumps in the air. That can be seen several times in his '88 Olympic LP, especially on the opening jump. I never said he was a terrible skater. He's not. He has some technical and aesthetic issues that I don't like. Even so, there's no arguing that he was one of the best skaters of the era, but "the" best of the time? No. When it comes to technique, presentation, artistry, and flow across the ice, Boitano is clearly the superior all-around, more complete skater. He also had so many signature moves that either he created or no one else did like him. He created the Tano lutz. His death drop was HUGE, and his spread eagle was incredible because of its deep edge and how long he held it. He really developed a signature style that stood out from all the others, and was technically consistent 90% of the time. It's why he went on to win 5 consecutive World Pro championships. If you compare their wins in international competition, it's no contest, Boitano has by far the more distinguished skating career, which is why I'm glad Orser has found success in coaching. That's not to say he wasn't a good skater away from Boitano. It's just that timing and circumstance didn't favor him throughout his entire career. That's why they called him Mr. Second Place.

It seems that we have completely different tastes , you have some aspects you don't like about Orser and I'm exactly the same about Boitano , so arguing has no point , I respect your openion . But still I'm not convinced by the story of that Russian judge , why he was the only one to be punished ? What about the other two who placed Boitano first ? And all of them who gave Boitano the higher technical marks they knew very well that the technicals were the tiebrakers if there is a tie ;i.e the most important at that time and can determine the winner , so they knew what they were doing and who they want to place first . The russian guy could've given Orser 5.7/5.8 , he could've given the scores he believed were the true ones if he is all about doing it right ? He believed that Boitano was much better but if you could see the comentators ( They were American and skating experts ) they said Orser was brilliant apart from the mistake and many others didn't know who will win ? Are you going to tell me that they were getting paid to say so ? This point of that judge is a bit doubtful in my openion because it is out of logic .

I never liked Orser's choreography and this program proves it. Its probably individual taste. But if you give Boitano only a 5.8 for technical how do you give this equal? no way - I just dont see this as THAT close. 5.9s for Boitano, 5.8s for Orser, maybe even a 5.7.

Brian Botaino was better any day technically and arstically than Orser. Orser was way overmarked. Usual old school skating tradition the judges tried to give Orser the gold b/c he was next in line since he was around since the early 80s and thank God Botaino fairly won.

Seriously having watched Midori Ito free skate from the same Olympics I am dumbfounded at how lame the men were Midori would have beaten both Brians on any day, even her triple axel was better and her presentation was just incredible. IS this how men use to skate back in the days seriously Debi Thomas and Katarina Witt were way better than this
