Keeping back angle the same until bar clears the knees, not lifting hips first, chest out with upper back locked in position are all key. One problem I had and most people have is getting the hamstrings loosened up enough to get into good position. This requires stretching 2 or 3 times a day and using squats to help get the hamstrings stretched out. When I first got into good form it felt like I could pull 100 lbs more than before.

I have no PhD in this matter and am no strongman, but from personal experience with 7+ years of lifting 4+ days a week, I find the same thing as Brian. If my mobility isn't QUITE there to get into proper form for a lift, I will make it easier on myself (ex. stacking the pads under the weights like he mentioned at 9:08), and work on extra mobility work; I often sub out a lifting day for a full mobility day. For me, I found this allowed me to strengthen my mobility, while getting used to the exact form I need in a deadlift or other exercise. As my mobility got stronger, I was able to lower those "cheats" until I had no extra help or anything. Sometimes, especially with mobility, I have found slowly working up to something is the best way to progress, rather than making it harder on yourself to force you into positions more quickly. Great video!

If you struggle to get to the floor your problem is mobility mate. Slowly lowering the bar down on pads from session to session does nothing to fix that. In my not so humble opinion this may be the best Strongman video I've ever seen. This is the kind of thing you and Brian can do that no one else can: camaraderie! Earlier videos emphasize competition among strongmen and not the family that brings out the best in each other. That makes the entire sport more attractive.

I've had that same problem as Oberst. Had to compromise upper back tension for the ability to reach the bar. Definitely gonna use Brian's advice and try using the mat.

I’m not a powerlifter or strongman. Just a regular dude at the gym, but Brian Shaw is the guy I get advice from and motivation whenever I feel down

That makes sense. I start very light because I have bad scoliosis and I need proper form. But now I'm getting much stronger with proper position and not all sloppy.

Great advice Brian. Ego lifting with bad form is just a bad injury waiting to happen. Lifting less weight with correct form is where really strength is formed💪

Hey Robert, just watched you and Brian do the one chip challenge. I said as soon as I was done with leaving a comment on his page I said I’d come right to yours and hit that thumbs up button, you always deserve it. Take care and stay safe and healthy.

Lol, I tried a wider stance because of all the top deadlifts did it. I hated it. Then, as I experimented and got better, I realized that my leverages mean I need a very narrow stance and a narrow grip, like Novikov. Now it's one of my best lifts. You just have to experiment.

So cool to see two pros willing to learn and adapt. I used some reinforced milk crates to raise the bar and start the process of unlocking my back for deadlifts. Once I got comfortable with that, I dropped 2 inches every 2 weeks or so. Now pulling off the floor feels safe. Weights are starting to go up and the gains are coming along for the ride. Thanks for the great content.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssss finallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! I've been saying the exact same thing as Brian for the longest time but I wasn't listed to, the deadlift needed to be elevated to a comfortable starting point!!! This goes for any lift, never ever ever persist with a very uncomfortable lift, it will never become comfortable simply because you're persisting.

Appreciate you putting this out, have a history of injury from army days and have been trying to figure out if deadlifting is worth it at 31. Knowing you have similar issues but fixed how you lift is really helpful.

This is why I love this sport. It is never about being better than the next guy, its about being better than your self yesterday. The contest are just a way of measuring your own progress. Most of these guys just want to see the best people compete and will help each other get better.

This is great! I've been slowing down on reps and doing negatives as well so that i face the weight and not the anxiety of just getting through it. It has built massive amounts of confidence and I no longer dread some of my lifts.
