Temp control is important particularly with a cheap heat pad. Those things can spike and get much hotter than you think. Having the heat pad and bulb on the same side it could get very hot. One other issue is having the only hide on the heat pad means the animal cant hide without getting heat. In a perfect world you would have a warm hide and a cool hide. I also found that with an open top cage its much more difficult to maintain good humidity. If at all possible try and get one that opens from the front.

I understand you were going for cheap but there are a few missing things that are pretty necessary for a new setup :P First off there should be two hides, one on each side of the tank. One on the cool side and one on the hot, a ball python will choose security over the correct temperature so if they only have a hide on the one side they will stay on the side with the hide and not thermoregulate. A better setup for it would be two smaller hides to either side of the tank and there water bowl in the middle. The hide with two open sides isn’t ideal because of the lack of security. Ideally you want two identical hides with only one opening that the snake fits pretty snuggly in. Also you want your heat sources to be regulated, for the heat lamp you can just get a lamp dimmer from Home Depot or something to control the bulb and for the heat pad (I know he talked about how it doesn’t need a thermostat but despite what the packaging says I have seen FAR to many burnt snakes from unregulated heat pad malfunctioning) you’ll need a thermostat. There is a pretty cheap Jumpstart thermostat on Amazon from like $30 or so and it works pretty well. So yeah it’ll be a bit more expensive but it’s really only be like 50 more dollars or so at max and it really will be worth it! I don’t mean this as hate at all, ball pythons are just very picky about setup and if the setup isn’t just right they tend to not eat or do well. I just wanted to spread some knowledge of my own to newer snake owners looking for information. Have a wonderful day!
@reviewsbyme46 жыл бұрын
Alphonse Elric Agreed with all of this. It’s worrying the amount of missing critical equipment in that setup. In addition to everything you said, the screen tops like that NEED some sort of locking mechanism. They make clips for those type of aquarium setups and without something to keep the lid on securely, the snake will definitely escape.
@wheezy11946 жыл бұрын
Lol my snake escaped until I got those locking clips

How to ACTUALLY set up a ball python for under $100: -large plastic storage bin: $12 -iPower thermostat: $15 -Zoo Med reptile heat mat: $18 -water dish, $10 -basic hide boxes: $10 each, get 2 All this costs only $75 and is already FAR better than the setup shown in the video. If you use a bin, be sure to use a soldering iron to make ventilation holes, and it’s just as good as a tank, if uglier. You can easily get bins the size of forty gallon tanks for around $10. Substrate can be newspaper and/or paper towel, which is free, or other safe options which will probably only run you another $20 at most. Also, I recommend getting a hygrometer to measure humidity (maybe $15 depending on brand), and some fake plants for cover and human enjoyment (price could be anything depending on how many you include but most fake plants at craft stores are sold for chicken scratch). So, an extremely basic setup with the bare minimum can be as low as $75. A more ideal budget setup is still only around $100. Both options are FAR better than the one laid out in the video and will give you your money’s worth while also providing care for a healthy snake.
@questionablejudgement31374 жыл бұрын
What's a reliable Hydrometer? I'm extremely new to this whole snake-owning stuff and I want to make sure I'm doing it right! If you have any other advice on what to get/what brand to get things from, please tell me haha. I plan on getting a ball python when I've got everything figured out and sorted. :)
@herpaderpz4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Beside being cheaper, I feel like tubs make adequate care much easier for beginners. Idk how many ball pythons I’ve seen on Craigslist people put in bare, oversized, screentop tanks with dry substrate, where the poor snakes have stuck sheds and are dehydrated and stressed. The tubs make it much easier to regulate the humidity and generally will make the snake feel safer (assuming the size is right). Honestly you probably won’t see ball pythons out often anyways haha

sawtoothscream 1 i agree, but as long as you get everything the animal needs, even on a budget, isnt a problem to me. Of course tou have to think about the possible vet bills and the mensual costs BEFORE buying the animal. I work in a petstore and sometimes, (i am in the rodent department) i explain to people that bunnies eat hay AND pellets and then tell them that hau is really important more than anything else (doesnt mean that the animal doesnt need the pellets and other stuff) and then theyre like "alright, well the food is expensive so ill just buy the hay" which is really annoying me. I sont mind them buying a good used cage online or wtv so they can have more money for treats, chew toys, etc. Btw they never leave with an animal if they dont have all the proper things they need for it (;

It's funny how I see everyone screaming about a thermostat, which is important yes, but no one is stating the obvious. Humidity. There's no hydrometer and there's no way to keep humidity in a screened tank. And with the heat lamp, it's even worse. A tank is okay, but you need a different lid or something to cover that up. Or you could use a tub and probably spend less or about the same and they hold humidity well. This setup wont do that. The animal won't shed properly and it will cause a big problem. The bedding just won't do it alone. There's a lot more housing reptiles than just cost. If you don't research and know what you're doing, please for the sake of the animal, don't get one.

I'd just like to say that unless you are in his exact situation this doesn't apply to you. Yes a thermostat is more important than a heat lamp but where I live, both are a necessity to keep humidity down. I also need 2 substrates depending on the time of the year. Aspen for the warmer times and something that keeps humidity in during colder seasons because the heating will keep humidity down. They should also have 2 hides on wither side. They will choose security over being comfortable and the hide shouldn't be open on both sides.

Happy Birthday! And don't follow this advice. Glass tanks are for fish... Lights are not needed and dry out humidity. A UTH can burn your snake if you don't have it on a thermostat. Buy a good quality PVC enclosure if you want something nice to look at! If you want to do right by your snakes and save money, build or buy a rack and keep them in tubs. Glass is the absolute worst thing you can put a ball python in. Brian has sold out to the petstores. I wonder how much they're paying him for the advertising.

Brian , won't the overhead light just destroy any humidity really quick that is in the tank and cause bad sheds ? and don't ball pythons need a slightly higher humidity level than say a kingsnake or cornsnake? And will the heat from the heat pad even penetrate to the top of the substrate where the snake will be sitting ?
@coreyhamby29896 жыл бұрын
mike vasquez Yes as a matter of fact those pads get a little too hot without a thermostat to turn it off at a set temp. Before i got a thermostat i set my tank just like this but with an extra hide on the cool side. I went to check my snake and noticed he was on the opposite side of my cage from the heater. When i checked the temp with my temp gun in was at like 115 degrees. Lucky i caught it. Oh and i had the same type of bedding but twice as thick.

Roberto Hawit Brian is notorious for being a horrible breeder, and there are numerous things wrong with this setup. It lacks a thermostat for the heat mat. Without a thermostat, heat mats have a high chance of overheating and burning the snake and/or starting a fire. Thermostats are essential. They also require at least two hides, warm and cool (and half logs don’t count, they’re way too exposed). If you look through the comments there are many other people calling him out, for good reason. I completely support you Brian but I have to completely disagree that you do not need a thermostat, if someone wants to keep reptiles and cannot afford the $30 for a basic thermostat then they either need to save a bit longer or think about a different animal. Any and all heat sources should be hooked to a thermostat. A living breathing animal should not be at risk for burns and or death due to financial issues. And I also do not particularly agree that glass aquariums should be used for ball pythons, tubs are the best option for these animals in order to maintain proper humidity. Also a hydrometer should be included for the same reasons as I stated about the thermostat. I understand where you are coming from with this video and like I said previously I completely support you and everything you are doing for the hobby, but I don’t think we should sacrifice an animals health or well being for $50 or so.
@Nick-ce6lt6 жыл бұрын
If your snake is at risk of burns then you are keeping the heat incorrectly and you should be more worried about the cage/house going on fire. A thermostat isn't necessary. I had 2 melt on me in the first 5yrs I kept snakes and found I shouldn't rely on them.
@ryanhardy2666 жыл бұрын
Any animal on an unregulated heat source is at risk, a thermostat is nothing more than an added safety measure to maintain constant temperatures. All my racks are set up using heat tape as well as Herpstat thermostats. At anytime a heating pad like shown in this video, or heat tape for that matter can malfunction. I’m not willing to take the risk on a malfunctioning heat source to save $100 on a thermostat. Is it possible for a thermostat to malfunction as well? Of course it is, that’s why any enclosure must be properly monitored but with a reputable thermostat that probability is small. Key is getting a reputable, quality thermostat.
@Nick-ce6lt6 жыл бұрын
lol my snakes are not at risk. I am way too paranoid about my house burning down for that to be an issue. I'm guessing you keep the heat tape and thermostat outside the "racks"? I've had 2 enclosures each about 2sqm. Putting a heat mat under them is not an option cos they are heavy and putting them inside is a disaster. For years I've been using a ceramic lamp behind mesh and I've found that to be the best option. I think I have another thermostat lying around but why would a thermostat help in that setup? Also not saying your way is wrong, I have smaller tanks for babies where I would use a heatmat under the tank with a thermostat if I wasn't using bulbs, just saying that Brian is correct that thermostats are not necessary.
@natemoran43496 жыл бұрын
Aquariums and tank vivs are fine. The most toxic people I've seen in the hobby are tub tantrummers with sub standard husbandry. I have a set up with a 55 insulated with rock backing, plants and moss with Cypress mulch bed. There's plenty of plant cover a uth with thermostat, four hides, a digital temp and humidity mod with probes on all levels of tank, and another temp monitor on the other side of tank. I rarely see it hit below 55 percent humidity. Ball Pythons can thrive in fantastic tank set ups when done correctly. Tub keeping is bare minimum shit husbandry and people who insist its the best are complete asshole pieces of shit about it.😂 They think they know Reptiles because they are morph collectors. Worse than the critics that say reptiles aren't toys, they aren't fashion accessories either.

Hi Brian! I actually have a few suggestions :) • wooden hides will actually mold over the course of a few weeks! not to mention that are impossible to truly clean. • I know you didn’t buy the gauge style thermometer, but it’s important to mention why they are TERRIBLE! your snake can climb on them and cause them to dislodge. the adhesive on the back will get stuck to the snake and they will die. • you didn’t pick up a thermostat which is THE MOST important thing! it differs from a thermometer in that it controls the heating elements. you can not regulate the heat and your snake will overheat. • you also need a hygrometer to measure humidity!
@agapeemenee6 жыл бұрын
• you need two hides, realistically; one on the hot side, one on the warm. • the UTH get well over 100 degrees. my first one (the one you purchased) got up to 121 degrees. thank god my snake was okay!
@agapeemenee6 жыл бұрын
• ball pythons do not need the light - many of them will become HIGHLY stressed due to the light, since it isn’t something they typically encounter in the wild. they live in burrows and mounds, underground, and are nocturnal. instead of a light, get a CHE! it gives off heat with NO LIGHT.
@agapeemenee6 жыл бұрын
For those of you looking to display your ball python, perhaps that isn’t the snake for you. A hiding ball python is a happy ball python; they aren’t a “viewing” animal, as they should be hiding 99% of the time. $100 isn’t enough to set up a proper home for your new little baby, unless you go for a tub set up.

Don’t forget some sort of locking mechanism for the screen top. Screen clips will keep it securely in place otherwise you will definitely have an escaped snake.

Allison Sharrer I had one too that got in the 120s. I noticed right away and got a reptistat. They make them that way for some of the lizards that need temps in the 100s to digest. You can regulate the tenp without a thermostat by adding bedding to distribute the heat and the issue is still that a snake has difficulty with telling when something is getting too hot until its too late. I agree with you and would highly recommend spending the extra 30 bucks for a GOOD thermometer. Do your research because cheap ones will fail eventually.

Guys, please don’t make this Setup for your ball python. The heat mat should 100% have a heat adjuster, and the tank also NEEDS a hygrometer, and also the enclosure is way to small for the python. Also, log hides are bad hides because it is not secure enough, and there is only one hide which means they cannot thermoregulate. Also, ball pythons, they are semi-arboreal kind of, meaning giving them places to climb is great for mental stimulation, and it does,t even have to be super high. *There is just no mental stimulation for the python. Never go for cheaper, always go for the best and highest quality for your animals, and let alone follow Brian’s care for his animals.*

Tobacco John no they ABSOLUTELY need enrichment. Would you put a child in a room with only a bed and water for their whole life? No. They need things to keep their mind stimulated, and enrichment lowers the risk of bad habits like nose-rubbing.

@@annbenn4380 you can't compare children to reptiles. These snakes are mostly kept in bins with little more than bedding and a bowl of water.
@bubblenest25724 жыл бұрын
Tobacco John exactly, that’s bad. Enrichment is very important to animals just like children. However I agree they aren’t the same it’s still very important. And it’s very easy to give them simple things like pvc pipes or fake plants which are very very inexpensive to get and are very beneficial to your snake

This is not a good starter setup for a ball python as they need more clutter in their tank and a better hide for them the wooden log. Not only that but a heat mat NEEDS a thermostat attached to it as they easily can get over 130 degrees and can burn the snake or some will even start melting and burn things around it. Lastly lights hurt a ball pythons eyes do a ceramic heat emitter is what should be used instead. If you got the cheap route your going to get snake that’s going to refuse to eat and be stressed out.

It doesnt need a thermostat if it has a regulator....

Glitchy what lol,you realize the thermostat is the "regulator" lol

Nathan Colby I know you dumb idiot, but, some heat mats have their own regulator in the cable that connect into the power source

Glitchy #1 have you met a smart idiot and what does that comment say about your intelligence? #2 what heat mat comes with a built in regulator?
@cjwalker63645 жыл бұрын
My exact same set up for my girl and she does great, I wouldn't leave a heat mat without a regulator plugged into it, it will get way to hot on it's own.

This is not a good setup unfortunately. Ball pythons need an enclosure that’s at least as long as they are. They should be given climbing enrichment. They should have two hides minimum, warm and cool. Log hides are way too exposed, they need more secure ones.
