My girl went inside the printer (like into the mechanism, with ink and spools) on my desk last night before I knew what had happened (realized just in time to see end of her tail slide the rest of the way in). Took some patience and a somewhat delicate touch to extract her without harm. And lesson learned (without tremendous negative consequences, always better). Don't let her do that again.

This was really a fun video. I love seeing a day in the life of your snakes. They are all just so cute, and I love all their little personalities (or big personalities). Kent forgot that he also does special effects on occasion; the SFX for the battle royale between the two substrate brands was top notch. Honestly, you should give him a raise. Also, Eko is always a joy to watch on her ladder behind you, but I was laughing so hard when she poked her head straight through her hammock (about 18:00) and then had to pull it back out. 😁

This was a fantastic video! I’m a science nerd so my knowledge of evolution by natural selection has taught me that snakes have been hardwired to always be afraid of being eaten. Natural selection dictates that those snakes that were not cautious didn’t live long and in many cases, not long enough to procreate. Which is the goal. The more cautious snakes lived to procreate. When you’re a noodle with a head, everything wants to kill and eat you. I’ve worked really hard building “threads of trust” with Darwin and he’s doing well. We anthropomorphize animals. I’ve tried to “think like a snake” and so far, so good. Bob, this video was excellent, thank you! (I bought the same playpen. Can’t wait to try it out)🐍❤️🐍

I needed to hear that Bob. I am a firm believer in knowing each of our snakes individually and giving them stimulation if they want it. You are amazing keeper and person. Thank you for introducing me to ideas for enrichment. It’s really important for the snakes we keep if they show us they are interested in spending time with us or simply exploring their environment. You must have the happiest snakes on the planet. If you were in the U.K. I would trust you with all my s;Ames. They would see you as Uncle Bob. Not sure if Clint would fit in though. But he could keep them entertained. I have a super pastel orange dream banana that would love your brother.

I really liked this video, I love seeing how day to day interactions are for people :) I wonder if with continued captive breeding we will get more personable snakes, since that's a desired trait and they don't have the pressures of wild selection. Breeding snakes is very new versus breeding dogs and domestic animals. When I breed jumping spiders, personality is one of the factors I look for. Some are more outgoing and sociable than others.
@GreenRoomPythons2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think that's definitely a thing with ball pythons. They've been bred for so many years now that they've become a pretty docile species. My guess is an F1 or F2 ball python would be less personable :-)

I wonder with domestic snakes if we in a very small way turn them into social creatures. The fact that they see us as food or chance to explore and seek us out for those reasons (depending on the critter). If I open up his enclosure he will 100 percent leave his hide or b line it to the front into my hand. Also after handling he doesn’t run to his hide he still explores. These videos are always a great learning tool keep up the good work

Seeing Kayda in this video reminded me of an idea/suggestion/ request for a future video, namely things to consider when adopting an adult snake as opposed to the juveniles and hatchings people typically start out with. For example, what sort of things should you ask the breeder/seller? What should one look for when inspecting the animal? Are there any differences in terms of acclimatization or quarantine requirements? How would one socialise an adult who may have spent the last few years living in a box? I am sure there are many more...

I think you're right about snakes not getting the whole picture of their surroundings when they're interacting with people, though I don't think it's excluded to just snakes; my cockatiel seems to view my hands as separate demonic entities from the rest of me that must be warded off with many a bite and war cry even though she'll happily snuggle up to my face with no problems, and she's got good vision and problem solving capabilities. It might be a matter of smaller animals having a hard time realizing that all the disjointed bits of human they can see are all part of the same entity, because we're so big to them that we just don't register as one being. So even if it seems obvious to us that the hand we moved towards the snake's face is part of us and shares our intentions, to a snake it doesn't appear that way Also, what's the morph of the baby at 16:24? It's so cute! I'm not much of a morph guy, but I love piebalds and bright yellow/gold ball pythons with super dark markings, so if I do get a fancy ball python, I want either a pie or one of those cuties. I love the normals, but those two morphs are just stunning
@GreenRoomPythons2 жыл бұрын
That's a really good theory on what's going on in their brains. And hilarious about your cockatiel 😄 That snake is Tiger Lily - she hatched out here. She is stunning and I believe she's a combo of 6 morphs, and a world's 1st. When you get that many genes together, it's easy to be the 1st one ever: Spotnose, Enchi, asphalt, calico, orange Dream, X-treme gene

I enjoy watching you interact w/your snakes, more then others! Sum vids i see 100's to possibly 1000's based on room size and cubes, and wonder if majority of the snakes are handled only when they are bred, fed and cleansed? Your vid here answered that for me! Also, i wanted to inquire that even if rhe snakes are separated into their enclosures individually, are ball pythons okay if you put them together? Like you did in the playpen? Or is it just because you socialize/handle them more frequently? Or is that natural? If in the wild, will they normally hang w/a bunch of other ball pythons? Or does it only occur when they are born, hatchlings, and young? Hope i make sense since sometimes i wonder what would happen if you left their tubs open (more then one) and one slid into another, unbeknownst? I saw one here on your vid and they seem to easily "meet and greet" appropriately! 😊 New to the green room and learning a lot from ur vids and amazing 🐍 🐍 🐍

I love that youre freeroaming your snakes, I wish I could do it as well. But I have a question, sort of. I have two boa constrictors, theyre still babys, only a few months old. The boy is a real sweetheart, I can handle him and he will just be curious. But then I also have the girl, she is getting quite big but she is also the spicy one, she didnt bite me yet, but she was striking. She absolutely hates it to be picked up, her breathing gets really hard, she'll move really quickly and distressed and is in a striking position. So I havent picked her up alot to not stress her more, but is that the right thing, or should I handle her more so she realises everything is fine and I wont hurt her? Because once she's big its gonna be a problem of she is so spicy.
@GreenRoomPythons Жыл бұрын
I have a few videos on how to socialize or tame a snake. I'm usually talking about ball pythons but the concepts all work with Boas as well. I wouldn't say that you need to handle that snake more, there are other techniques that you can use to socialize the snake without putting her through the stress of being handled all the time.

Very cool how each snake has their very own personality! Before I looked into snakes I pretty much just assumed they ate, pooped, and slept and that was it lol I do have a question though, I got a new baby two weeks ago. He’s never struck at me, only hissed when I had to help him get stuck shed off, and has eaten twice with no hesitation. I have had to make some changes to his tub (substrate, getting a different thermostat, and taking the humid hide out he does not even go near it). I only handle him for 10 minutes max because he used to get antsy and try to run. I got him out last night with my daughter and he didn’t try to run once , hardly moved wasn’t really flicking his tongue and was tense. I am TERRIFIED thinking every possible thing may be wrong with him lol his humidity is great (bumped it up since the bad shed) he doesn’t look dehydrated at all, but this isn’t “normal” for him to be so still. He’s not going into shed either. Maybe he’s just calming down? He is due to eat today also…

Hello, I'm a brand new ball python owner and have very luckily stumbled upon your channel. I'm incredibly grateful for the content I've seen so far, so I'd like to ask you a somewhat embarrassing question. So I have a baby male ball python that I've just gotten a few days ago. He's around 3 months old. This was not an impulse buy, and I've done my research. My experience is coming from keeping rats, so very different. Anyways basically my plan is to leave him alone until he's eating, and I haven't handled him since I put him in his enclosure a few days ago. He seems very nervy. Anyways, opened his enclosure to change his water out and he came out of the hide he was in and struck me to the point of drawing a fair bit of blood on my hand. I was not expecting this as I wasn't bothering him or his hiding spot. I don't know where I should go from here. I knew I'd have to wait for some semblance of trust but as this was my second (unintentional) interaction with him I'm saddened that this is how our relationship started. I haven't been handling him and have trying to give him as calm of an environment to settle in as possible. But now I'm wary of even opening up his enclosure. What do you think I should do from here? And thanks again for channel, you've been so helpful!
@GreenRoomPythons3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joelle! Congrats on the new snake. So this is a baby in a new environment - and super scared right now. That's really common. I have two new babies who came in like that as well and one also bit me in our 2nd interaction. Both are now super handleable after less than a month... Watch my videos about behavior and what to do with a new snake and you should be just fine... Those bites will draw blood because they have a ton of little sharp teeth - but fortunately a baby's teeth can barely get all the way through the skin because they're so small, so they don't cause any real damage. It always looks worse than it is :-)

Totally off the subject, but I really like the music in the beginning of your videos. Could you please let me know who is playing? I also appreciate the information you give.

Hey thanks so much! That's me playing. It's a banjo tune I came up with as a theme song. My more recent videos don't do have the opening theme - But I still like the tune. I sometimes will grab the banjo and play it live during my Livestreams :-)

You think captive bred snakes wouldn’t be as nervous or on edge or have that instinct as much as a wild one would

Captive bred snakes are much easier to socialize than a wild caught animal

So I've owned snakes for several years, but I have a question about letting them out to explore and I guess this has just never came up because I usually handle them one at a time. So I have one ball python, one Boa and 3 retics. All are under 2 years old, except the Boa turned 2 a few weeks ago. All are females except one retic is a male. I know u don't cohabit any snakes, even if it's the same species. My question is tho is it safe to handle them together or let them explore together. Obviously I'd never put two male retics together because they would fight Obviously, but is it OK to have them together in a controlled environment?
@GreenRoomPythons2 жыл бұрын
In general yes, it should be fine. You might find that your retics start doing breeding behaviors so you might want to watch closely if you put the male with the females, but you should be safe with them all

How does this guy never get sick from salmonella? I’ve seen him bite his snakes tails??
@GreenRoomPythons8 ай бұрын
Because salmonella is very rare in reptiles. In the 80s and 90s all the moms were concerned that their kid would get it from touching a reptile. Most people get it from eggs at the grocery store.... Snakes are very clean animals as long as you keep their enclosures clean.

@@GreenRoomPythons thank you so much for the reply! My girlfriend and I are really wanting to know if our female ball python carries salmonella or not, and can’t seem to get a solid answer on how to find out
