I watched Punk play a FT5 on stream against a Ken player in SFIV the other day. I swear I heard, "My man's wakin' up with kara throw!?" about a hundred times. Final score was 5-3 Punk, but it occurred to me that the Ken player had zeroed in on something Punk was not prepared to handle: bone-headed non-meta bullshit. And it was working. "Isn't it insane that in order to play fighting games you have to go to somebody's garage?" Brian I can't thank you enough for saying this. While I've met a lot of great people through meetups who are now some of my best friends, I attribute that to good fortune for finding the right people. Back in the early years where online wasn't even a pipe dream, I met the local Greek FGC and I can tell you I didn't enjoy hanging out with those people. I felt forced to go to their homes, though, because I had nobody else to play FGs with. Back then I had crazy social anxiety, too. It was just not fun and I never got better at the games either. Shit, I'm not even up for going onto some game's discord to find matches and chat over voice. I don't have the time for it and honestly, I prefer my strangers to be anonymous and have no real way of talking to me, let alone be in my immediate vicinity when playing a competitive game.

"this move doesnt work" The reason that smash people say this is because it's true. Melee has never been patched, not once in 20 years. Imagine if Street Fighter was still exactly how it was in 2009. Banilla SF4 Vega's flying barcelona would often just never find the wall. It was fixed pretty early in SF4's life IIRC, indicating that it wasn't supposed to be so useless. That move wasnt intended to be THAT useless, it was a move that didn't work. All the examples of that in melee are still in that game. A great example is Luigi's dash attack. The last punch is inexplicably completely missing a hitbox. You can kind of deduce from how all the other moves in the game are programmed, that it should probably have a slightly bigger hitbox than the other punches, and have some light-medium level of knockback. It doesnt, the hitbox is just missing, which makes it extremely minus on hit and a completely worthless move, bad in every situation. Its pretty clear that this isn't because it was designed to be so bad, it's because they forgot to put the final active frames in the game and had exactly zero patches in 20 years.

Falco Up Smash in Ultimate pre patch 8.0 also comes to mind. We went through a year of that move connecting exactly 0 times. And then Snake Up-tilt in Brawl is an example of a move that clearly was not intended to work the way it did. Unless they meant for it to hit you from across the stage and kill at like 50% There has definitely been some wacky stuff in Smash.

Not teaching players how to play the "actual" game. I feel like a lot of the issues FGCs have getting a mainstream audience is the fact that most of the playerbase, myself included, has no real idea what they're doing. If you just hop into multiplayer and don't have someone kind of coaching you good habits, you end up just learning bad habits that work for awhile against the story mode and against other novices but can actively harm your progress if you don't pick up on it. As an example I assumed most of the reason I suck at fighting games was a combination of having trouble with consistent inputs and slow reactions (even basic combos are super difficult for me even with what feels like endless practice) and that stuff like frame data and frame traps and mixups were just going to be too far over my head. I've started to have more of an understanding of why that stuff is important and how in the world I'm supposed to identify what a "good button" is but I think what i really need to do is just try and unlearn all the random mashy guessing and learn some sort of solid foundation to build on.
@phantomcyrano
@phantomcyrano 4 жыл бұрын
This is a common mentality of new players, but the truth is that fighting games aren't much different than any other game as far as learning curve, they just tend to have a much higher skill ceiling when played completely optimally. Case in point, I remember how to animation cancel with flash in League of Legends in the training mode in just a few minutes and then immediately doing it in a game. In SFV on the other hand, inputs might be tighter and it might take me longer to get to the point where a bnb (bread and butter) combo or punish is consistent. People interpret that as fighting games being "harder" when in reality they just have more skill levels you have to progress through. You also do not have to play fighting games "optimally" to he good at them. I would recommend watching some of Brian's other videos specifically about learning fundamentals, or any of the other many videos on fundamentals. At this point saying that there isn't a way to learn the "actual" game is a bit misleading. There are tons of videos on KZbin alone about how to play neutral, basic combos, how to frame trap etc and tons of them are by small creators who will reply to you if you ask a question in the comments. The real reason fighting games aren't as mainstream is that they don't offer instant gratification (I'm getting beat but at least I got a kill!), they force you to take all blame for your losses (I can't blame this on the *insert teammate name here*"), and generally they have bad online. The third one is the only one that fighting games are uniquely to blame for. But if you're watching vods of pro players and wanting to play the way that THEY play then you have to realize that they aren't playing the "actual" game, they are playing the "optimal" game, and only a tiny percentage of all players ever play on that level. Are fighting game tutorials generally bad and or non-existent? Absolutely. But in this day and age there are just too many resources available for that to be the reason you feel that you can't improve. P. S. Check out Sajam's videos on how to use one or two buttons to win ranked matches as a starting point to change the way you think about winning/playing the game. Really good info.
@Celestatiune
@Celestatiune 4 жыл бұрын
@@phantomcyrano Thank you for your extremely thoughtful reply. I will absolutely check out Sajam. I agree that there are many resources out there - this channel is one! But the actual fighting games themselves are not designed to get people better at the "real" game (whether that's the "pro streamer" tier or something like the gold/plat tiers which still in most games constitute a tiny minority of the playerbase). I've been (badly) playing fighting games since SF2/MK1 and watching this guy's channel this year has been my first realization moment that I, too, should be thinking about things like frame traps, "good" normals, etc... Things which i'd assumed were just so far above my skill level that i might as well not bother. Games like League and DOTA on the other hand... are actually designed to educate their playerbase. The skill cap is obviously lower as you're essentially only expected in most cases to control one unit in a RTS control scheme, but I'd argue they do a pretty good job of presenting what it is you need to do to improve as you play the game. With fighting games you typically need to exit the game and open a webpage to even start getting better. A lot of the core mechanics used to be considered exploits. Convenience matters or Amazon wouldn't be a global giant today with razor thin profit margins. If fighting games were better at getting players to the jumpoff point where mashing no longer beats them, I think it wouldn't be such a niche industry
@phantomcyrano
@phantomcyrano 4 жыл бұрын
@@Celestatiune While I partially understand your point, I couldn't disagree more. There is a myth around fighting games that in order to be good at fighting games you have to grind in training mode to do advanced combos, learn advanced techniques like frame trapping and know a character's moveset backwards and forwards and all of their frame data. That's just not true unless you want to be an "expert" level player, the league equivalent of plat III and up. To be good all you need is to know how to anti air consistently, know how to space a couple of your moves and not throw out buttons without purpose, and understand the basics of blocking. I played league for years and when I first got into it it was completely overwhelming, not because of the execution required, but because of the game knowledge needed. If I hadn't had a high level ranked player as a brother to help me learn things like how to focus on farm, what builds are most effective for what champion, how to play a losing match up and oh did I mention how to build effectively (twice for emphasis) I would have been completely lost. DOTA never even tried because at the time there were even more champions, more build paths, a bigger map and the courier mechanic that completely changed the dynamic. Coupled with the tremendous amount of game knowledge that you need to understand what champions have what abilities, and the fact that you have the added pressure of a team that your failure can directly affect, these games a far tougher to learn in my opinion. As I gained experience I found that I could completely roll inexperienced players who didn't know how to handle vision or build their champions, get their teams to flame them and then take them completely out of the game. And speaking of which, the incredibly high number of people trolling/rage quitting and flaming in league just steepens the learning curve, since it's highly possible that through no fault of your own you may not even be able to fully play the game because your jungle took bad ganks and fed the enemy top laner. In most fighting games there are ways to view your own replays and see what you might have done wrong, and since you play by yourself, you never have to worry about losing a match because someone else played poorly. I would recommend you check out Fantasy Strike now that it's free to play. It has one button execution so it's a great game to learn fundamentals and different styles of play without having to learn any complex inputs for any characters since the controls are universal across all characters. It also has a basic tutorial to help you learn the game, which you're definitely right about most fighting games lacking. But if you can learn the build paths for three or four champions in league, you definitely have the capacity to learn a couple of poke tools in a fighting game.

This one's tricky. There are plenty of reasons to not want to switch characters, some of them scrubbier than others. Ultimately, it comes down to that player's taste and worldview. Why would they switch to a character that doesn't align with their values? If nobody else on the roster was remotely playable (by whatever metric that person's considering) other than the character they hate, they'd probably just drop the game altogether. The locals comment really resonated with me. The FGC essentially halted its hype/relevance due to no offline tournaments (understandably) . While people's answer to this is just "we have to wait for offline to come back" the problem that's being avoided with this answer is that we are completely neglecting what is considered the norm in the gaming sphere. People DO NOT want to go to some random guys basement to play a game in 2020...it's just not going to happen. As much as I work to be able to do moves even at and intermediate or an expert level you can sometimes still lose because you couldn't input hadouken at the right time.. which lead had me in the past to cater more towards games that treated special moves as a special case. And also surmise that this is why 3D fighters originally became a thing.. not counting moves like Akira's knee or the entirety of modern Tekken. Fighting games have a problem with accessibility at the expense of depth.

"It adds nothing to your game" If you get pissed off because you turned off your brain upon getting hit and _expected_ someone to do the standard combo, only for them to check you and find out you were thinking about the post-kd situation instead of paying attention... then yes actually, it is adding something to their game. There's a lifebar/super meter/distance to the corner all on the screen, but there's also a mental equivalent to each of those that exists inside your head alongside them during a match. _That's_ where this type of maneuver is aimed to attack, and if you lose 50% of your mental health bar to one of these you're in danger of getting stunned in the event the same situation comes up again and they actually do have the traditionally optimal route on deck.

Sometimes random games with no history get pushed to the front of the line while the games I like are easily tossed aside to the point where I can't even find videos for the matches till about 2 months later while "random side tournament that didn't get streamed" or "every other game that did get streamed" is posted on yt the day of or the day after.😑

Generally in smash, when people say a move doesn't work, it normally means the hitbox doesn't line up with the animation, or a multihit that doesn't link the first and second hits properly

I don't think you understand what smash players mean when they say a move doesn't work. A lot of smash moves just literally do not work as they're obviously intended to. Smash Ultimate Pit and Dark Pit are perfect examples especially considering a lot of their moves were patched to actually work.

Gotta disagree with 5:54 as it pertains to Smash, for the simple reason that Nintendo's hitbox programmers are very clearly _terrible_ _at_ _their_ _job._ "Very few moves actually don't work the way the developers intended to" is just false when it comes to Smash. As in, the game designers want a move to work a certain way but the programmers screw it up and the move doesn't consistently behave the way the designers wanted as a result. Most patches have a huge number of hitbox fixes that have the sole purpose of making multi-hit moves connect more consistently, because the opponent would just fall out of the move before under circumstances that were basically impossible to predict as a player, meaning every use of the move would be a gamble as to whether the game hates you or not at that specific moment. Imagine if you are playing Ken in SF and you stand right next to the opponent and do a hard DP, and 1 in 10 times you do that the opponent just falls out because their idle animation made their hurtbox shift slightly, so they get a full punish on you. That's the sort of thing people are talking about when they say moves in Smash "don't work". I don't know if they ever fixed it, but at least for a long while, Smash Ultimate Dedede had 1 frame on his fsmash where some of the hitboxes were typoed to have zero damage and knockback. The opponent would just instantly teleport to the ground instead of actually getting hit. Check out around 10:00 in Rekzius's Dedede hitboxes video. _That's_ a move that "doesn't work".

CoViD is really showing how flawed the “locals being a bandaid for bad online” point is. Suddenly top games are scrambling to patch online in any way they can now that players can’t reliably play irl matches. It’s at least better that they didn’t have a solution ready at all, rather than the solution being a 2 day fix that could’ve happened at any time.

Smash does kind of have a problem with their moves that just don’t work like they are programmed, like Kara canceling with Ryu and Ken they can cancel a move that’s supposed to have lag into a lag less option. It’s good tech for the character and I think it fits well but it’s not intended

some moves in smash do "not work" sometimes. mostly multihit moves "randomly" dropping, (of course you can probably predict when it fails to connect fully and opt to not go for that and do something else instead) also there was a big stink that shoto players were having when their proximity moves would or wouldnt activate when they expected them to. Something for me personally is Snake's ftilt which is a two hit move that you have to activate the 2nd hit for, (so I guess a 1 button target combo), but the problem is due to body blocking mechanic vs some characters the move's 2nd hit will just whiff or just whiff when you have too much rage or theyre too high of a %. and if you try to hit it on people in the air its actually very minus on hit. All of that makes the move really bad to go for and most top level snakes opt to rarely ever use it (even though its a frame 4 move that kills relatively early) .

Smash player here, I think you’re mistaken about how smash players are saying moves “don’t work like they’re supposed to.” There are multi hit moves that people will fall out of or some weird jank happens that is NOT by design (Roy Up B OHKO in melee). It’s been a thing for a while, just wanted to clarify. Also, claiming Smash isn’t core FCG but then bringing up smash in FGC topics so you can complain is pretty self-contradicting, yeah?

As a person who used to play smash religiously I used to be a part of the this move does not work bandwagon because I was used to being better then most people. But once I got into fights with people who knew how to tech and do things so that my old setups didn't work I'd get pissed. That's something that playing more in depth fighters like sfv, fighterz etc. I changed my mind from this move should always work what the hell, to okay that move didn't work, so what setup can I do to make it work. And honestly I feel much more confident in my gameplay as a whole because of it. Solid vid man! Love your pieces of advice and wisdom.

I think the reason you here "This move doesn't work'" so much in the smash community is because there is a history of developers focusing more on representing a characters series than game balance (I'm not defending this mentality). However recent games have tried to focus more on balance.

Pit is a great example of moves that fail to work sometimes His Nair for whatever reason has four hitboxes and they aren't even the same size either which leads to misleading hitboxes, plus because they're not big and in the center with an auto-link angle that means the move though not often will fail sometimes I've seen it happen And then theres Falco's Up smash. Csptain falcon's up smash works fine because theres a hitbox in front of falcon even though he's kicking stright up. They did make Falco's a bit bigger but it still whiffs on smaller opppnnents

As a smash player, a lot of the time "this should work" actually means the move isn't programmed right. Sakurai and his team do a good job but often overlook minor details, so we see moves that straight up dont work sometimes. For example, bayo's fair has multiple hits, and the point is that they link, but if you DI they didn't link. We can clearly see the intent but the dev team overlooked DI, and we can see this because every patch we see a bunch of notes that say "Made (move that doesnt work here) hit better into consecutive hits". This happened with Bayo a bunch, a bunch of other multi-hit moves, such as fox dair, Luigi dash attack, and y. Link and t. Link up-b just from the most recent patch. Devs wants moves to work certain ways but often overlook how some aspects can cause them to not do that, especially with a game with 70+ characters. So "this move doesn't work" is actually a valid complaint sometimes in the case of smash
@aricting4252

I think a reason people find issue with that is because in Ultimate there's supposed to be no SDI, so all the multi-hits should work. If there was stronger SDI, then nobody would complain about the moves not working because SDI would be legitimate counterplay against it.
