Check us out at the NEW Lawntrepreneur.com!
Today we're going to be mowing tall grass and cleaning up a new property that we just picked up this week! To say that they had an overgrown lawn is an understatement! The front boulevard was almost 2 feet tall, and the back was no different!
Thankfully it was pretty dry (and hot!) out and the grass was able to be mowed back into shape with not too much trouble. It's not every day that we see properties like this in the nicer subdivisions that we mow in, but sometimes we find a neglected property and we have to get it back in shape!
I'm not sure about you guys but I love watching clips and videos like these. Somehow they're just oddly satisfying and it's always fun to see some of these commercial lawn mowers in action shredding through thick tall grass lol. Thanks for watching!

I got called into do a clean up of a house that the guy had been out of state working for 6 months and was coming home for the labor day weekend by his friend who was supposed to be taking care of the property. The grass was chest high in some areas. It was a good week but I hadn't been in that area of the county since Monday. I told him what my emergency fee was plus fee for double or triple cut charge. I got there at 7am and called the guy took pictures of the grass. I had never in my life been so glad to have a tractor and bush hog. This was a 3 acre of mowing property. I had it nocked down by 10 am just after the home owner pulled up. He told me to keep going, and signed up for service. The guy who was getting paid to make sure it was done paid my normal emergency fee plus double the triple cut fee. The owner was so happy to have his nightmare done with and he didn't have to do it, that he tipped me 100 dollars. I hauled off the clippings in a 20ft dump trailer 6 loads to a local farmers who gave me $20 a load for silage grass. This kept me from making a 20 mile one way haul to a composting location owned by a local city. So for the day I ended up $600.00 in the black after overhead. I smiled all the way to the fallowing Tuesday when I deposited the money into the bank. That was in 1993 or 1994.

Had a .5 acre property that was receiving notices from the town about the unkempt lawn and was facing fines. When I should up to give an estimate, it was 2-3 feet tall and thick. My Ferris Hydrocut 32 with sulky was the tool to tame it. It was a double cut but came out worlds better, now they’re an ongoing customer and that property transformation also won me a couple other accounts in the neighborhood.

When my parents bought their first house in NJ the back yard(1 acre) was 4 feet tall. The owner had already moved to Massachusetts. We got it cut down, but it was a lot of stubbles that was hard to walk on. We eventually made a good lawn out of it, but it took a long time.

The tallest property that I ever mowed, had about 3-4 feet of growth. It took an entire day to cut, and we usually had huge establishments such as Hotels, and Apartment Complexes to do. It took us all day, and we had to come back the next day in order to go over it one more time as well as do some cleanup on whatever was left. We also had to trim out around the side of the yard, a lower hill, and blow everything that wasn't picked up by the Walk Behinds into the yard so that It could be used as fertilizer or whatnot. It was annoying. And it was also around 80-90 degrees outside. So it was horrifying.

I'm coming up on 80 hours on my Exmark Radius S, 60 inch. I do 3 acres of my own lawn. What a mower! And I wanna put in a plug for the rear discharge version. I guess I own one about three in the US, I dunno. They seem rare but it really cuts beautifully and no worry about where the spray's going or about windrows. Great work there, high envy factor! (Although I think I would've cross-hatched just to break up the clumps better). Thanks for sharing.

When cutting long grass it helps to raise the deck all the way up first. Make lines in one direction, lower the deck 1 inch. Then cut at a different angle. 3rd cut lower .5 inches and cut at another opposite angle to disperse the clippings. This is a lot harder in tight spaces but this shouldn't have been a problem in the front of the house.

Just a pointer when I mow over grown grass I’ll mow what height I’m mowing the yard one time all the way through then go two or so inches higher the second cut and the third I’ll run what height I’m mowing really helps mulch up the clippings and spreads them out well I’ve been doing lawn care for 15 years I’ve mowed 1000000 dollars homes to trailers they all get the same treatment

I find it satisfying turning overgrown neglected properties into something nice. Ill bring loppers, recip saw with pruner blades, and the usual law equipment. Only downside is people tend not want to pay much for the time and abuse the equipment takes. Plus the hidden gems in the overgrowth, like hoses, kids toys and random bricks/rocks (that happen to be way out from any buildings under 3 ft of growth, when hit)

After about 2 months they finally asked if I could just do it for them while they were gone. The grass was up to my hip and I was a bit over 5 ft tall at the time. I basically mowed the acre lot 4 times in the span of about 3 days. Trimmed everything I couldn't' get with the mower. Walked away with $500 in my pocket. He got the mower fixed about 2 weeks later.

No exaggeration, when I was about 12 I helped mow a yard that was severely overgrown and was over my head. Grass was at least 6-8 foot in spots but most was 5ft tall grass. The amount of times I had to pull start that poor push mower... It was fun tho

In Australia I used to get regular lawns with grass waiste high, those were a huge pain to cut down and tidy up toughest is finding where the rocks and stuff are through the yard especially if its the first time doing the lawn for a new client.

Use to work for a company that did city complaint cuts day to day like that there was a handful of lots that where left for a year or more so many broken mowers hard to see rebar and rocks under grass and before you ask yes we trimmed 1st on 80% of them

as a kid I had a neighbor who was friends of the family and the asked if I'd like to cut their grass. My parents said they were offering 20 dollars to cut their lawn. I accepted without knowing how tall the grass was in the back... It was about 2 feet tall and a large portion of the property was on a 40-50 degree incline. All I had was a push mower. Nothing like having to untangle the blade every couple feet...

The tallest grass I cut was my yard the first cut after buying the place I have about 7 acres of grass on a pretty steep hill. My neighbor said the grass hadn't been mowed for about 4 years. It was 7ft in places. I did about half with my lazer z then the neighbor brought his tractor with brushog to finish after I blew a belt. I'm pretty sure I doubled the property value by mowing the grass ha.

Can you make a video on bagging vs mulching. I live in Massachusetts and almost every lawn care service bags year round. However watching your videos and a few other lawn care youtubers it appears that in the Midwest you guys mostly mulch it. Thanks love the vids!

Do you just leave the grass clippings on top of the grass when it’s that tall? I had a customer that wasn’t happy about that when mowing extremely tall grass. It’s mixed where I am. Some want mulched some want it bagged.

Brian's Lawn Maintenance just want to know. How do you charge for bagging? Is it extra how much do you charge? Do you dump the clippings at someone’s property or haul away? Stuff like that is super helpful for us northeastern guys.

I had to do a commercial site that was about 4ft tall mostly thick weeds. At the time we had a Exmark 48 and 52 inch turf tracer walk behind and the blew through it with only 3 passes. On the 3rd pass the clippings were more like a paste.

Nice work man, we go through stuff like that on a weekly basis lol. Block slashing and overgrown rental property cleanups are basically becoming one of the mainstays of my business. I throw my rear discharge JD front mount in and it doesn't stop for anything ;D I think my record is probably around 5ft because that's a bit lower than most fences here and I've had a few that were almost up to the top of it!

Thanks for all you do for others. To give of your time and more. Bless you 🙏. I don't mow any longer on my property. My husband does what he can do. I know you should cut it at different levels, starting high and go lower. I wanted to say, I have seen grass about 4 ft or more. It doesn't seem that grass there is as tall as you stated. Only my opinion. Wish you had measured it. I have learned not to cut grass too low, so the sun doesn't burn it or dry it out. I might be wrong, just what I have been told. I had lawn service and each time they would leave information on anything we needed to do to make it, or keep it green. Thanks for all you do for others. 🙏👍🙂 P. S. It looks in better shape than others I have seen. Greener and level, etc.
