After watching your video carefully, I replaced my fuel injection in 5 hours, and it worked perfectly. I think I am ready for another 200K on my Suburban. Thank you for a great example.

Did this a week ago and man is she running smooth. Thanks for your awesome instructions which made this possible!!! I took it all apart in about an hour on a Friday night and it took me about 3 hours to get it back together. I took pics of all the bolts so as not to misplace any. She get's better fuel economy too.

Sometimes seeing someone else do it can give you the confidence to do it yourself. I’ve been putting this repair off about a year and my suburban has been sitting the entire time. I now have a renewed interest. Thank you!

Thank you so much. This was a truly great video. I am the original owner of my 99 Suburban. It now has 170K miles and it really never ran right (misfires, check engine light always on… you know the drill). It had the older style injectors replaced about 100K miles ago. It also had the lower intake gaskets replaced twice (water leaks). Repairs like this kept the truck running halfway decent and generally not leaking. But it still never ran right. I just did this MFI fuel injector conversion. I also opted not to move the AC compressor. I did it in a single afternoon. Really not too difficult, but only because I watched your video and knew exactly what to do. Without the video, I would not have even tried it. The truck runs so much better now. Just passed NJ inspection, no problem. Definitely saved this truck from an early grave.

Hey thanks Brian! Did this in a '99 Denali I got for free cuz it was misfiring badly. I diagnosed it to a couple of bad injectors and watched your video because I haven't done one of these before. All good now and runs like a champ!

Thanks for posting this video Brian! Your calm way of talking while doing the job really helped me when I tackled this job yesterday. I watched your video about 4 times then decided I was able to do this. It's been a little cool this week so I used one of the others comment suggestions and used my heat gun "very" carefully to warm up the plastic tubing and everything worked out great. The most nerve racking parts was snapping the unit into the bracket but with patience it went right in. I don't have a garage so I had to do this outside. My truck started right up and runs like a new one. Dennis

I am handy with an engine, but was worried about getting everything out of the way and/or doing them in the right order. Followed you sequence and was a quick disassemble and reassemble. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to make and post this video. I brilliantly decided to do this on the coldest day we have had this year so took a bit longer as I stuck a heater under the hood to warm everything up for a bit to try and avoid the tabs on the old injectors snapping off and falling into the engine. It worked though. Gave me time to get a couple cups of coffee and warm myself back up.

Thanks Brian! Great video! Van runs great now! Number 5 cylinder was running lean. Figured it had a bad injector. Tried fuel additives of course none if them worked. Not wanting to burn a valve I just knew I needed to replace that injector. I was worried it was a little over my head. After watching your video and going back to it when needed it was a breeze! Thanks Brian! Did this upgrade this weekend and it was much easier after watching this. Fuel pressure regulator was leaking and was hard to start hot, so did the whole upgrade instead of just the FPR. Took about 2 hours of actual work - and 2 more to clean the carbon mess that resided under that cover. The tip of putting the injectors in first, then pushing the spider down until it locked was spot on a well. My Vortec runs so much smoother now. Thanks again!

The crowsfoot flarenut wrench that you use to disconnect the fuel lines in the back is the way to go. The firewall makes it tight to fit a normal 16mm wrench in there. The crowsfoot wrench made it easy. I just replaced a leaking fuel pressure regulator in mine. A lot of work just to replace that one little part but necessary. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the video. I followed your instructions yesterday to do my friends 79 suburban 5.7 liter. Thanks so much- couldn't have done it without the video. The spider cost 300 bucks at Auto Zone and they had it in stock. I saw the same part at other places for 450 bucks. On his 79 I left the ac compressor, but did have to remove the thermostat housing to allow the manifold to lift up and off the heads, as part of it was directly underneath.

Thanks brother. My wife and I have decided to by older vehicles for this reason.....we can work on them and parts are aplenty. She chose a 97 2dr Tahoe 4x4 and I'm running around in a 97 Landcruiser. We love our twin 97s. She just shot hers with Line-x and it look beautiful. I'll be doing this job this weekend along with plugs and wires along with an upgraded alternator and starter. Should take me 2-2 1/2 days God willing. Thanks for taking the time and caring enough to educate us. You're a great teacher. Your kids are lucky. I got grounded as a teen whenever my Dad caught me trying to work on my own vehicles. He always made me take my truck to a mechanics shop. By the time I got to college I had no time to learn. Hey Brian, Not sure it matters any more but the SCPI stands for Sequential Centeral Port Injection. Crappy Diesel type poppet injectors that were opened by a valve inside the middle of the spider unit. For those who do not know this style injector will not operate if the fuel pressure gets below 50 PSI. The new unit is true Multi Port Injection where the injector pintle is opened via a solenoid at the end of each injector. This is why there is a couple of wires heading down the fuel lines for each injector. This was the best fix I ever did on my 98 Silverado.
@YouKnowTheyExist
@YouKnowTheyExist 6 жыл бұрын
There are situations under the spider cover that can damage multi port wires, valve leakage and fire pops, plastic fire and heat sufficient to melt wire insulation. Multi port tubes are bigger diam, I had one break near the intake manifold, so engine totally fills with fuel. I recommend the SCPI with pintel torpedoes up in the spider body, a line break is less likely and does not fill engine with fuel. Mike Reynolds, below, many new parts and no luck - sometimes the bearings on the distributor, and the gear, are so worn that consistent spark is impossible. I grind a spare cap to expose the brass and check the spark life at each line to plugs, when you short the STRONG spark the engine slows. When you short a dead cylinder the engine does not slow. Dead cylinder can be due to crud after distributor goes bad, or due to dead pintel in spider. The cap grind trick is rather definitive, you can see faulty spark power, 1/3 size sparks with an occasional full size spark means the distributor bearings wobble and the trigger is confused, timing is off.

This is the de facto video on how to do a spider. With some salient folk philosophy thrown in. Thanks a ton for this video. I have since done three of these rascals. This is one of those jobs that looks daunting at first, but is easy if you do what brian says. These things are very brittle. Like he says, warm it up if it's below 70 degrees. Use the included tool to twist the legs into place. If you don't, your chances of breaking one of the legs goes up 10x. I will add one observation, of course. Do NOT insert the white nozzles until you are 100% sure everything is situated correctly. If you need to take one out, forget it. Impossible. I had to make a tool out of a paint can opener to extract stuck nozzles and on a van, that's about an hour apiece in less than comfortable conditions. They give you a couple extra nozzles in a baggy. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. Thanks again, Brian,. Great video.

You're the first person I've ever heard or kind of met that even knew who Temple it is. I have a daughter with autism and I have read her book and it was incredibly enlightening. You should try doing this when you're 5 foot 10 it's flipping miserable! Of course my truck sets up higher in my driveway is about 2 degrees short of being an Olympic ski jump. No joke if you drop a socket in my driveway start walking to the street cuz that's where you're going to find it. I enjoyed the video

I use a pair of dental picks and just be gentle. Remember that if you do break them off there are ways to get them out again. There's metal in the tips so magnets work. And if all else fails, putting a new lower intake gasket in is actually a really good thing to do while you're in there.

I had the strangest thing happen after changing the spider , I still have not been able to figure it out. After replacing the spider I took it for a test drive and within 50 feet of driving it I pushed the AC button and smoke started coming out of the AC controller it fired the controller. I have traced all the wiring inside and have not found any bad wires. The AC has been replaced all the Air blend motors have been changed. Not sure if there is one for the hot to cold. The AC work great before changing the spider so I thought I might has pinched a wire or forgot a ground but everything looks fine, I replaced the AC unit the high pressure cutout switch and the dryer, put a new controller in and it smokes it when turning off the fan switch. Not sure if anyone has ran into this problem but I thought I would put it out there I watched your video to go back through all the parts and wiring being removed to see if anything would click just in case I missed something thanks for the great video.

You mentioned in the video the truck had P172/P175 as lean (I believe you misspoke since those are rich codes and the pcm would remove fuel with a negative fuel trim). Was it misfiring? I am wrenching on a 1999 5.7l, P0172/P0175. Really no symptoms except a CEL. Fuel pressure is 62-66 but did bleed off over 1 hour to 20psi (but have to consider the fuel pressure gauge leaking). Engine runs fine/smooth w/o misfires. Fuel trim is buried negative at idle and slightly better cruising, BUT has compensated to 14.7:1 with the o2 sensors switching rich to lean. Coolant temp/IAT match cold, MAF is around 2400htz at idle. I did pull the upper plenum for a look, no clean spots under the lines or under the fuel pressure regulator in dripping fuel. I think the fuel pressure regulator is releasing fuel into the plenum through the vacuum port, but there is no evidence of this such as a clean area under it. I really dont want to make a bad call on a $50 fuel pressure regulator or a $300 spider injector based on the evidence I have. Suggestions?

Yes- sea foam and lucas. Just only use about 1/4 of what they recommend. Excessive use just coats your upper cylinder with white concrete-like substance.

Check for spark. It could be the CKP, control module, or coil.

thatswhite1 I had changed the Cab twice before...so I am confident that it is not the issue. It started shortly after I changed plugs wires cap with all accel set. ill keep playing with it even though the truck has sat like 2 years now. LOL

Good teacher, thanks for the tripod. Have a 96 5.7L vortec in my suburb, Just quit while driving and wont start. Has 320K miles on it. Have good spark. Fuel pump works. Fuel pump regulator ok. Has gas at the rail. All elec power and grounds at the spider cap are good. Will start and run if I pour gas in the throtle body port. I suspect the spider fuel injector is bad. Gonna attempt a first time replacement because of your great video. Sould I look elswhere first?

I have 1998 5.7 vortec and it has developed a miss or skip that I can't find, i have changed everything electrical, but now thinking spider may be the culprit, but i don't think I'm a good enough wrench to tackle this project.....dude I wish you were in North florida, cause you are the man on this fix and would love if you did mine. thanks for posting video.

Hey Brian. Thanks for the detailed video, I knew it would be a bit of a process but now I know exactly what to expect. I am trouble shooting a 5.7 I just bought and found once I add fuel and let it sit for a few days that my gas is dramatically less.ordered a fuel pump,filter,plugs and head gasket set because of constant white smoke. upon checking my oil I noticed it is thin and smells of gas. So I am assuming it is the spider leaking either at the pressure regulator or one of the spider legs. have you ever run into or heard of this happening to anyone else? could I clean the regulator or do I have to fully replace the unit? Thank for any help my way. 2000 Denali 5.7 no check engine

I just did this on my 97 Tahoe. Couple things: you can buy the delphi unit on amazon for much less than various retailers and MUCH cheaper than dealer and comes with the new hold down clip though its not mentioned. The injectors going out are also associated with having a constant or consistent miss fire code, mine was Cyl 7. I'm not sure if you discussed any miss fire codes, I did my best to watch the whole 36 minutes but I do not recall hearing it mentioned.

UPDATE: Brian, I loosen the screw that holds the bracket and raised it a little which brought the injector up higher. I decided to change the bracket since my spider injector came with a new on. My wife is a nurse so she gave me some surgi lube and everything worked out fine. she's running great, like the day I bought her. I got 231,000 miles on her and hope to keep on going ! Thanks for your video..John

My Yukon has a similar engine and I had a very similar problem. I had misfire codes on 7 of 8 cylinders. New plug fixed one cylinder but had 6 injectors failing intermittently. Spider swap got rid of it. Just fixed it on 3/5/13.
