The first tractor I learned to drive was a 1965 Massey and I felt like a kid given a new toy to work with. It was not mine, but I treated it better than the guy who owned it or his son. When I got to drive another guy's Ford tractor with power steering and a more powerful engine I was scared at first, then loved it. i now own a John Deere 790 with power steering and love it. I made sure that I got it with 4x4 also which came in handy.

Cool video. I just bought a MF 2135 with the loader attachment a few months ago. The loader definitely makes engine maintenance a bit harder. We are going through and rebuilding the 3 point now. I did an engine overhaul on an Allis Chalmers of the same size/vintage. There was shims under the bearing caps and safety wire on all crankshaft fasteners. The oil filter was a bypass system meaning it only cleans on the pressure release side of the oiling system... Old machinery is cool :)

That's the trouble. That's one nice thing about this one- we used cleaners, but didn't have to buy much of anything. The plugs just had to be burn-cleaned with a propane torch and the rest was easily fabricated or re usable.

you have a neat video to help folks that know little about these tractors. I see 1 exception is that you don't have enough oil in the oil bath air cleaner, there should be oil in both sections of the bowl and of course up to the fill line.

I've got a 1952 Ferguson TEA20 with the 12 volt ignition upgrade and the 85mm bore cylinders. The earlier versions of this tractor only had an 80mm bore and were quite underpowered. I believe the larger diameter cylinders increased engine power from 20 to 28. I love my little Fergie!

Doing work on an air cleaner on one these myself at the moment. It's a 1953 TO-30. It like the one in you vid has the dash mounted pre-filter. Our 1951 has it mounted on top of the cleaner, so the one you worked on falls between late '51 when the change was made and '54 when Ferguson and Massey-Harris merged and they stopped making 30's. That body material can be soaked clean if it isn't too bad or replaced with either the 3"x78" stuff made for it or steel wool. Grey all the way.

Nice vid, Brian. I just got a Massey 35, and was checking the oil in the air filter. I didn't dump it out to see if there was dirt settled at the bottom, but the oil wasn't too dirty. Just wondering, this one had pretty much the same oil level in the middle as the perimeter. Do you think that's okay? It seems to be running rich, so I'm going to clean the element in the top part of the air cleaner, and change the filter oil before tinkering with the carb. Maybe too much oil impairs air flow?

Our ferguson tea20 originally started on petrol, then once warm was switched to a petrol/parafin mix (TVO - Tractor Vaporising Oil). It had a split petrol tank with a larger and smaller section, the smaller for starting(petrol) the larger for continuous use(TVO). It now runs only on petrol and has had a hole put in the divider.

Just bought a 54 TO30 I believe based on the numbers on the transmission. Did some googling and the user manual matches what it looks like. Though Iv never done anything more than drive my grandpa's old Farmall 1 time. So this is new waters for me. I'v always wanted a tractor and this runs but needs work. Any advice on where I can get info? This video did wonders on filters. But what kind of oil do these gas tractors take? What kind of coolant should I put in the radiator? (Northern MI winters) I want to fix the lights and run new cables where could I buy the lights? Alot of questions that I wish I could find an old man sitting on a bench at a tractor show and ask away. I know it's years later but if anyone can point me in the right direction it'd be wonderful!

Hiya great video. I have a 1958 MF35 petrol / tvo. It starts fine but has no power.It was ok a couple of weeks ago. It seems to back fire occasionally. There is no oil in the air oil filter. Would this make a difference to the smooth running of the engine? There is no problem with fuel getting to the carburetor and it runs the same on petrol and tvo. I cleaned the bowl . Advice appreciated. Thanks again.

I used to drive a 2 cylinder Yanmar, never really used the box, it was always in 4H. One day decided to try 1L, put it in, and could walk next to it with engine going at full revs. could even stop for a stretch and to water a tree without it going more than 5m away. Nice little tractors, only thing was spares were a problem on them, very costly and long lead times.

Also note the old time 'updraft' carb! They were popular in those days, and on some cars as well. They wouldn't flood an engine with a leaking needle/seat, but could be a fire hazard. They worked beter with oil bath air filters too. Many light aircraft still use updraft carbs to this day...

Most of them I've seen/worked on had very little oil in the center. You could be right. I'm given to think the curve in the middle would be negated were it full of oil up to the holes. The user manual could be consulted if it survived the chicken coop fire of 1968.

It was tractors like this that revolutionized farming after the war! Massey invented the 3 point hitch on the back so that the implement could become part of the tractor and not just a dead weight lump towed behind. I tried to by a diesel TEF20 of a farmer to restore but although it just sat in a Cheshire field here in England rusting away he wouldn't part with it! Not only do these have 6V but they charge off a dynamo and I think some are Positive Earth! I love tractors!

Brian, I'm working on my mother-in-laws MF65 and just replaced the throttle shaft that snapped off. Got everything back together but now the carb isn't getting fuel. I removed the glass bowl assembly and when I turn the fuel shut-off the bowl does NOT fill back up. The brass filter inside the bowl is clear. I'm starting to suspect sediment in the gas tank. Do you have any suggestions? My father-in-law died 2 months ago and I'm trying to fill some big shoes in the repair dept. Thx. Darren

I believe the red hood makes this a Massey Ferguson and not the older gray Ferguson. If it is a model 30, it's probably a 1963 or 1964 model. There was always a big debate about oil bath vs. paper filters when I was a kid. Rubbing dirt off the throttle plates always proved the oil baths were ineffective. People argued that the dirt couldn't pass through the oil without getting trapped. But, as previously posted, the air just turned sharply and relied on centrifical force. Good old days?
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 11 жыл бұрын
Very simple, it is a diesel engine with spark plugs and a single injector as well as a venturi and butterfly. To start you turned fuel selector to petrol and turned it over, then it would operate and run as a petrol engine. When it was warm you changed over to diesel position and this changed fuel supply, turned butterfly to full open and enabled the fuel pump to do control of injection volume. Then you turned coil off when running well. To stop you did reverse, if not no start next time.

just found this which helps clarify ... The TEA-20 is the exact same tractor as the TE-20 with the exception that the motor on the TEA-20 is a Standard motor from the standard motor company. Both were built on the same Banner Lane assembly line in Coventry England. The TE-20 version ended as the TO-20 line started up in Detroit, MI USA. Due to tariffs, taxes etc. The TO-20 supplied the USA market, while the TEA-20 line supplied the British Commonwealth market (i.e. Canada) and the rest of the world.

The old 2 cylinder John Deere Tractors had a small tank for gasoline to start the engine, when the water temp reached 180, you would switch it over to the large tank which used kerosene (was really cheap fuel in the day). As long as the temp was kept up, it would run just fine on that cheap fuel. Then when you were done for the day, you had to switch it over to gas and run it a little or it wouldn't start the next day.

Those oil bath filters had the air do a hard 180* just over the oil surface in theory allowing centrifugal force to help sling out dirt. Most had a 'cleanable' mesh element as well. Is yours missing? They didn't offer even close to the micron rating of modern filters, and caused restrictions at higher air flow rates. The Wikipedia 'air filter' article talks a lot about them. Also, is that sediment bowl fuel filter missing a sintered bronze filter element? It might be...

I've got a question that I can't find a definite answer to. I remember old timers when I was too young to know anything but just watching them as they go about maintaining their old equipment, you see I was raised by old people. They had tractors and cars that used the oil canister filters instead of screw on disposables. Now, I saw them clean their oil filters with kerosene and put them back in after draining them. Was this common practice in the old days? I know everyone is rich now and just buys new stuff but is it always necessary? Because their engines never failed them and I don't know how many times it was done before a new one was bought. Ferguson TO20, 1948 Plymouth special deluxe. You maybe too young to know.
