That upper main chain guide plug was made for the ones that sheared off the bolt in the head so you wouldn't have to drill it out. Sometimes the bolt will break off when the chain gets too loose.

Hey Mike. I'm working on a cobalt ss 2.2l ecotec 2008. I'm not 100% it is the same but it sure as hell looks so. With that being said I marked my sprockets and popped them off so I could answer your question. The sprockets on MINE can't be put on wrong. The keys on the sprocket only go a certain way. Research everything, triple and quadruple check everything. If anything doesn't seem right DO NOT continue, just get it right. If you don't every single valve in that thing will be done for. All of them.

If my cam shaft sprockets do not align with where the INT and EXT marks should be can I just use a wrench and move them? In your video they were already in the 2 o'clock position for the Intake and 10-11 for the exhaust. Thanks
@OffGridInvestor
@OffGridInvestor 4 жыл бұрын
Best to still have the old timing chain on and move the crankshaft until the camshaft ones line up. Because if all 3 don't move at the correct ratio it can cause valves to hit cylinders and basically destroy the engine at first start. And it WON'T BE a 1 to 1 ratio between camshafts and crankshaft because the crankshaft sprocket is far larger. If you've removed the camshafts completely, it gets more complicated but there's a comment on here that answers that.

how do i verify the #1 piston is at TDC on proper stroke. My timing chain was broken.
@mikenone5902
@mikenone5902 Жыл бұрын
Well this is a late response, but I'll answer. When the Crankshaft sprockets are at the 6 and 5 o'clock positions the crankshaft is at TDC on #1 cylinder. Then when you line the colored links up as explained in the video that sets the cam timing to the compression stroke with #1 at TDC. Just means both valves are closed. It could technically be set with any cylinder at any stroke, but it's done like this because that is where the timing mark is set and what the colored links on the chain are set to line up with. Also by using the compression stroke both valves will be closed so you don't have to fight with the valve springs trying to spin the cam lobes around. To further answer the question: if your cams are not lined up with the colored links after setting the crank sprockets to position, then you have to manually turn the cams with a 24mm wrench with the chain off to align the timing marks on the cams with the timing marks on the chain. There is a place to put a wrench on the cam just behind the cam sprockets. Do the intake side first. The video left out some details. You also have to rotate the cams to get all the chain slack to the left side where the tensioner is and then activate the tensioner by pushing it in 2mm with a prybar with some tape or anything soft on the end so you don't damage the chain, or you can use the back of a screwdriver and tap it with a hammer. For the bottom tensioner you just pull the pin and then run and jump down on the ground and try to find something to shield yourself with.

If the engine is been turn, how come the timing marks never line up again?

I have done exactly what has been shown and after all the Mark's are lined up and I activate the tensioner I turn the engine over by hand clockwise and I get lots of slack on the intake side by the fixed guide. Then if I turn the engine a little more the slack goes away but then comes right back. Everything is lined up and there is tension on the tensioner side. What is going on

@@zachmaas7618 is it a new timing kit? And yeah it's not making sense. If both tensioners are activated one for primary chain and another for secondary chain then it should all be tight. Only way it will have very little slack but not enough to jump a tooth is due to the fact that they tension up with oil pressure.
