@ In my opinion, when Cannon’s name came up as the judge for the Ryan Routh case, the assignment should have been rejected by ‘the powers that be’ and sent through the selection process again, minus Cannon’s name being on the list. There has to be a person or a group of people or a process that oversee the assigning of cases. If I remember correctly, I read that the assigning of cases is done by computer. That’s fine, but when a known conflict is present, like with Cannon and Trump, her name should have been removed from the list of available judges. And then none of this would have ever happened. It seems so simple to me. And I realize hindsight is 20/20, as the saying goes, but when there is a clear and present conflict, like with Cannon and Trump, alternative measures are required.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. I had a judge recuse simply because the prosecutor overheard the defendant say she thought the judge was handsome. It was outside of the courtroom and the judge was not privy to it. Judges are supposed to take the "appearance of bias" very seriously.

I am a retired lawyer from England and many years ago attended a preliminary directions hearing when the Judge opened by disclosing that he had just noticed that one of the company directors was in the same stamp collecting club as him and although not a friend was known to him and asked me as the lawyer for the other party whether we wished him to recuse himself and after the briefest consideration with my client asked him to continue with the hearing . He had been concerned at the possible appearance of partiality and raised this himself . I knew the Judge from numerous cases and was anxious not to delay bringing the case to court but if any Judge in England were as partial as Judge Cannon they would not last long on the case and possibly not as a Judge ... and likewise with regard to our Supreme Court Judges. If you have politically appointed Judges you must have strict and enforceable procedures to follow to ensure they act fairly and do not pervert the course of justice.
