I'm pretty sure a lot of them are for describing the creation of the original Tezcatlipoca Mirror (described in the prologue comic Judgement) The lion figure would be Tepeyolotl, the spirit who sought to rule over humans, while the deer would be Coyolxauhqui, the spirit who wished to sgregate humans and spirits. The two came to blows, which sparked a war, and realising the damage they'd done, the two put aside their differences and sacrificed their lives to become a magic artefact that gave form to all their best virtues (the Tezcatlipoca mirror). From what I can see, they each used the Spike to sacrifice themselves, like a dagger, and then Mahtigwess and Lusifee (Wrip and Vinkle) either stole the Spike, which would fit with the narrative of episode 14 (incidentally, the episode where Edmonia the Hatfield girl recognizes the imagery in the murals from), that Lusifee hunted down Mahtiguess under oath from the mortals (likely the Salemites). He would have either fallen in love with her and stayed in hiding together, or they were already in cahoots, and he hunted her down as a cover to prevent others from doing it, Or they took it and ran on Coyolxauhqui's request, possibly to prevent anyone from using it to sacrifice other beings to create artefacts. Given Scowleyow's sudden interest when he heard Edmonia recognized the image, and his overall creepy vibe, I can totally see this being the case.
@player03Ай бұрын
Fun fact: one of L. Frank Baum's earlier works features an evil King Scowleyow, who creates a giant wind-up robot (the "Cast-Iron Man") to lay waste to the protagonists' kingdom. Fortunately, the robot trips, and the protagonists get him to roll over and stand back up facing the other way, at which point he marches back to Scowleyow's kingdom and destroys that instead. Doing this requires a feather to tickle him and a pin to poke him, and I'm wondering if the pin corresponds to the spike discussed here. The robot Frida met two episodes ago seems much more like Tik-Tok (a later L. Frank Baum character) than the Cast-Iron Man, but I still wouldn't be surprised if the spike has some kind of special interaction with him.

I have to say, too, that Mictlan gives Oz vibes, like the roller monsters were similar to characters from one of his books. I believe that book started with Dorothy and Uncle Henry on a boat going somewhere, and it tipped over and she was washed away with a talking chicken. She came ashore on a beach surrounded by trees growing lunch and dinner pails, which was guarded by a group of Wheelers. They were ferocious but couldn’t actually harm her.

Putting observations and explanations below undercut for no spoilers - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The morse code in the beginning is American morse code and spells out "HATFIELD" The first stain glass we see in the building at my guess depicts first the Tezcatlipoca. You have Red, White, Black and Blue like the Tezcatlipoca. Red Tezca. has a wave of fire/lave and requires sacrifice. Given that the white Tezca. is a bow, having wind with it makes since as arrows are affected by wind. The black panel looks like Charles's skull from back when he woke up Icky. We do not know too much about the blue Tezca. but you should ge the idea The story thereafter has the inclusion of a lion like and ... a deer or ox type spirits. Some kind of hooved animal at least. There are also two stars in the webs so one is likely mama spider. Not sure who the other star represents. Quickly put, the stain glass panels introduce the two spirits. Then shows some vaguely spider-like things came from the sky. Humans asked the hooved animal spirit to investigate, and it got dismembered. The lion like one put the hooved animal one back together. In retaliation the lion one made a spike possibly by sacrificing itself. Hooved animal used the spike on the "space/star spiders." Hooved one cry tears of blood and a lynx and bunny spirit were made by the tears falling on the webs maybe? Humans seemed to of captured? Sealed? The humans did something at least. They appear greedy at the end. The humans messed up somehow is the feeling I get. Could also be as the humans got greedier the spirits left taking the spike with them. Honesty not too sure about the end
@CinderbloomАй бұрын
To add to this, since it's a great detail thread, the morse code that you hear in the episode goes as follows (from what I have caught) 1: "W O O D S" - following Emily cursing said Woods. 2: "H A T F I E L D" - Following Clark asking where he (the inmate) went. Notably, Hatfield was also the last word in Emily's sentence. 3: "H A T F I E L D" - This time it sings it again from atop the Deer Statue's hammer, when Scowleyow is talking about the people of Hollow and Salem. Unsure if it is simply repeating the last word, or what the meaning is with the third whistle, but it catches Emily's attention regardless. Notably, the bird seems to be mechanical in construction (especially since it's introduced right next to, well. actual living birds). As Scowleyow's namesake is also an inventor, I assume he made or at least designed the birds. I'm also curious if they can only reply back what someone else has said, a little like a mockingbird which mimic other's calls? It also buzzes its wings very quickly, kind of like a hummingbird? Additional notes: The panel for the Blue Tezcatlipoca is interesting. It seems to depict stars and what could potentially be wings? Which makes sense, given its hummingbird associations. (Maybe there's a connection there with the mechanical birds?) The Sun Lion and the Moon Stag bear some superficial resemblance to Coyolxauhqui and Tepeyollotl. But given that they much more closely resemble the characters shown in the side animation Spirits End, I assume it is those. Their myth also seems to follow closely with them. The panels directly after them seem to depict stars or other spirits falling. Initially I thought that the diamonds with legs were a little like the spidery manifestation of the Black Tezcatlipoca, but I am not so sure any more. But notably, the humans seem afraid of them? I think it is implied that the six legged creature was the one dismembering the Stag. Notably, Lions are not native creatures to the regions where Betsy usually draws her mythology from. The Lion and the Stag might be from either a more modern source, multiple sources or another region. But the Stag miiiight be related to Anukite? With the moon and sun connections. Interestingly, in the panel where the Moon Stag (for lack of a better name) is riding the Star-Spider, there are several little spikes all around the frame. They almost look like teeth to me? Not sure if the tears fell into the web, or onto stars in the web. I feel like the stag would have been shown above them in that case. In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, there is a panel where the Stag holds out its arms to the Rabbit. Notably, the Humans in the panels are shown in the same colours as the first part of the tale in episode 14: Mahtigwess and Lusifee. Generally, the artstyle is incredibly similar. The servants of Mystery also feel a little similar to the people of Salem, but that might just be me going off the deep end. Notably, in the panel where Rabbit and Lynx come together, they look like an anatomical heart. I do not know if it's intentional, but it looks neat. Said heart also seems to just... Vanish. When you have the shot of the dining room, you can see what KINDA looks like one of the Star Spiders out through the window! Additionally there is two statues with water running over them, a STAG and an elf. The stag, notably, looks to be rusted? Like the water is rusting away at iron. The stag also seems to be wielding a sort of hammer? Future spirit down the line, maybe, broken out of a captivity? There is a theme of Water and Chains in the episode - everywhere you look, water is pouring down. Seems like a very inconvenient interior design decision, but knowing that the Black Tezcatlipoca is kept out by water, it might be intentional? The bowls also have the eye symbol from the belt Scowleyow and the undulating square lines could be the wheels of cogs if he's an inventor. Also Emily's plate (scratch that, ALL of their plates) is decorated with pictures of Rabbits, and the jello is in the shape of a Lynx head! The berries for brains is a bit unsettling. A lot of their decoration seems to have ears, too, like the glasses. There are glow worms in the lamps. The way Scowleyow says he regrets how people acted rash and hotblooded when the people of Hollow left Salem makes me feel almost as if they escaped him? He also gives me the vibes of a Dr. Seuss character but messed up, I love it Also I just caught that the guy from vineyard's got... fur? hair?? in his right leg/boot. Not sure what that's about.
@leonatheodosia3582Ай бұрын
@@Cinderbloom Thank you for translating more of the morse code! I did not have the time when I first posted to go through it all. The Blue Tezcatlipoca did interest me as well. Defiantly something to keep note of. The Lion and Stag are interesting. The stain glass panels do seem to pull a bit from the lore of how spirits come to be and, the as of writing this, recent video on how spirits die. Sorry I was unclear; I do realize that we are supposed to infer that the spider dismembered the stag like spirit. It is missable, given the similar colors. The panel with the stag like spirit on the "spider," you can see the stake through the spider. I was able to look at the panels closely given I am on PC and you can go frame by frame using the "" keys on PC. I took the sharp objects on the side of this panel being other those blade like ends on the legs of the "spiders." As we see more than one "spider" on their introduction panel. Though I could be wrong. We might get clarification one day I am unsure of why the Lynx and Rabbit spirit showed up as well. (I know they are likely to be Vinkle and Wrip but I want to open to them to the idea they are not just in case. Anyway, tangent aside) I remember that spirits come to be when falling stars hit mama spider's webs. Personally, I would not be too surprised if other things hitting the web made spirits. Yet we do not have conformation on that, so it is just speculation on my part that blood tears made the two. Not really expecting to be correct on that. I did want to mention that you can see what appears to be a "spider" out the window. I was happy to see you point that out. (1:06 for those who want a time stamp) I also feel that the statues are important somehow! Though the only thing that came to mind was the Tin-Man from the Wizard of Oz. That did not feel very helpful to mention haha. I caught the water as being a theme but not chains. Right, the black Tezca. does not like water. forgot that detail as it does not come up too terribly often. How you describe Scowleyow makes my Wizard of Oz comparison feel more appropriate haha. Maybe it is. Would not be the first-time newer legends and stories were incorporated in No Evil. Oh, the guy does (0:13) how strange. And interesting
@danieldubinsky95Ай бұрын
Didn’t xochipilli say the blue tezcatlipoca was a liberation machete that could cut through mama spider’s magic webs? Hi I just wanted to say that I was introduced to this series like 3 days ago and since then I've watched it all twice, read Brother Swan and bought Judgment, and I just got to say that your creativity and hard work and devotion to your craft and your world is downright inspiring. I've made comics and stories myself, and it's so encouraging to know that a craft can be refined over so long and change and grow so much, but still maintain its story and its core and its characters. The answers to mysteries are revealed while simultanously other mysteries deepen and multiply. The animation improves and the storytelling changes and the music grows ever more complex, and I can tell you weren't the same person you were when you began the project, but still the story is the same story, the characters the same characters. It can be watched in order and make perfect sense, even if some details remain mysterious for years. You have an entire armory you've been filling with chekov's guns, from the blue/red crystals in the ick in Episode 2, to the rusting statues in the background of Episode 50, and I know that one day they'll make sense and play a role. 12 years is a long time, but in the scope of the world it's not too long at all. Now that I've found this, I hope to follow it for another 12. Respect and admiration. -Cody

There's plausible ambiguity to both sets of Morse codes. "Briar" is a kind of weed; also refers to a wooden pipe made from its roots for smoking. The Morse code is played in a wooden flute, hence 'woodwind' (& other corrugaphone-whistles). Jello-cello; violet-viola.

May I start with thank you for making this series and not giving up on it I know it must be a lot of work but thank you for still working on it. I like the wizard of OZ but don’t know everything and will forget thing but so if I may I will put some stuff I may of noticed as well as some theories but this is also inspired by OZ not the same thing. 1. The man reminded me of the Gnome king even his magic belt 2. Whatever statue that was may be a person held captive seeing how he was metal and rusted with water constantly pouring on him it may keep him contained (as well as he holds a axeish like weapon it think it a hammer) and he is probably the deer creature from Spirits end especially since he’s made of metal Some details found as well is you can see the spider like thing in the paintings outside next to the table 3.the glass cat as a food (also I love how you incorporated things as details). 4. the the people of Salem are in blue like the munchkin part of OZ (also the violet room probably a reference to the the purple piece but could be a reference to the land of eve? The purple part of or outside OZ) 5.the lion may be a reference to the Cowardly lion. 6.the water that changes the leaders eyes may be Truth water that reveals his real form?? 7.Mechanical bird like also seems to point to the statue as Also not in this episode but Tik Tok mechanical clock egg on wheels and the Deadly Dessert or was that to many s’s. Some other details I noticed is that you can see the spider like thing outside next to the table the one in the pictures. And I like how you see several people with prosthetics/ mechanical limbs And why does the man from the asylum have hair on his leg and pointy ears a assumption but maybe he’s a spirit?? But I love your story and work Betsy Lee I hope you have fun making it.

Very good. Your cinematography has improved greatly since you began. Unfortunate that the episodes are so short, but it is no big deal. I'll struggle similarly once I start stop-motion. I wish you nothing but the best.

That sweeping shot in the beginning is absolutely stunning. Beautiful work!

To be honest after the latest episode, I'm concerned with the two statues in Scowleyow's dining hall. one of them I suspect is either that deer spirit in a dormant state or their previous body. the other statue I do not know but I hope they aren't a start of a collection.
@lofwyr5063Ай бұрын
I agree... there's just so much immediate overlap between the spirits end story and those statues and murals. Might be too obvious though...and thus 'too easy' ...
@asparrow5179Ай бұрын
Noticed that Scowleyowl seems too have some kind of connection to water - he puts his fingers in the water bowl before he gains his eyes, the statues have water pouring on them, and when he is questioning them about the spike he puts his fingers in the running water nearby. Not sure what it means though.
@lofwyr5063Ай бұрын
I think he likes to pee. Running water everywhere. Puts his hand in a bowl of (probably warm) water. Has to leave an important meeting to "Do work" Is a nod to the nome king from Oz, and where to kings sit? The throne. He's also the number one of the town. Sorry Betsy, you didn't outsmart me with your cyphers this time! Checkmate!

someone else pointed out his other eyes only opened after they ate some of the watery jello stuff, maybe its related

Oh holy shit! All the spinning and the different murals, this episode's animation is such a jump but it looks fantastic! (even if it got me pausing every frame to go whoaaaaaaah)

That sweeping animation through the landscape and castle was really cool! It reminded me a lot of some Vocaloid animations.

Ooh, there's a lot of eye shapes. The murals are interesting, too. I can see three natural disasters and a blue mural. I wonder if it's anything to do with the Blue Tezcatlipoca. There's also something about the sun and the moon, I think? The cat is the sun, and the dismembered deer is the moon. Maybe some evil stars/spirits or spiders? I'm not familiar with the story.

I just realized that the woman at 1:09 has clockwork hands. I wonder how many people here are as mechanic as the Morse Code bird.

Does...does Salem worship Wrip and Vinkle? (Or spirits in general maybe?) Those murals and the cat and rabbit motifs elsewhere seem to imply they're at least very important.🤔

@lofwyr5063Ай бұрын
Mancabinet... that's something I can see actually being a thing to be 'super masculine about', like manpurse, mancave, and action figure. Which I support, by the way. Not bad for men to be masculine...but it's also preetty funny, too.
