Vmaxs are so much fun. They may be long from the quickest anymore, but their visceral light-to-light enjoyment is hard to match. I rode and drag raced an 85 for many years and really delved into all the aftermarket fun. I would agree that the Kerker 4-1 produces a symphony that will make you just want to keep it in the shop to start and rev when your day is a little shit. Until that time you can greatly increase the sound by just putting the largest drill bit on an extension that will fit down that outlet and drilling through the baffle. Dynojet used to make a Stage 1 and Stage 3 jet kit. Stage 1 gave the best streetable machine, but the Stage 3 would produce great numbers for high revving drag racing. Both would allow you adjustable needles and assortment of jets. Stage 3 had you drill a larger hole in the carb pistons and it removed the Vboost replacing it with open connectors so that you always had the Vboost but mine never seemed to like lower street revs after that. Dale Walker did a ton of racing and aftermarket parts including belt driven superchargers or 4-barrel conversions. Kosman would machine a sick wider and larger circumference rear wheel so that some updated sticky rubber could be run on the rear while retaining the shaft drive. The UK and France had some great published Hooligan builds that went extreme Front ends were always spaghetti and my riding friends would tell me they could see the frame flexing when they rode behind. I would just carry my weight on the pegs and hover over the seat so that it could dance all it wanted. Jay Gleason did some amazing times on Vmaxs including the spread that Cycle World did back with an 85 with a Kerker and the Dynojet Stage3. He went high 9s I believe with some bolt on wheelie bars. thekneeslider.com/jay-gleason-rides-new-vmax-to-9513-at-14370/

A guy did a V-Max build back when.these were new. He called it "Bad Max." I saw it locally here in Phoenix, but it was also featured in a motorcycle magazine (forgot which one). It had the most incredible sound of any motorcycle I've ever heard. It sounded like a built V8 from idle to full twist. It would have been neat if more people built these bikes, but they were so complicated and expensive. Great job getting it running!

My uncle had one and he let me take it for a spin when I was 18 or so (I just freshly lost my license and was only allowed to ride 125cc anyway). Man, what a pig it was to ride. Slow speed maneuvering and turning takes the strength level of an olympic weightlifter, that thing seemed to have 100% weight on the front. Then came the moment I hit a long-ish straight and revved her out, from 50 km/h in 3rd all the way to 160 km/h or so, when I closed the throttle because my hands flew off the handlebars! Never have I ever been on a machine this fast; in fact that thing was faster from 50-160 than any other vehicle I have ever ridden from 0-50!

There is a simple mod you can do to the stock mufflers that will make it sound better. Drill out the rivets holding the end plates on, drill some holes in between the rivet holes then using M4 nuts glued on to the inside of the end plate as spacers and longer rivets, put the end plates back on (or leave them off).

I restored it to running condition and replaced the wire harness. Had no spark for a long time but the voltage regulator had a grey and white wire on it, they got reversed somehow and I just found that out by a fluke of playing with the wires and it came out, then I was like shit, maybe these are backwards! It never ran the same but I did take it out a few times after. Had some issues with the carbs and ended up trading it for a 97 VMAX 700cc red head snowmobile, the 2 strokes never die! Looking forward to your next video, I am sure you will figure it out. Seems in the comments below, there is lots of tips. Freeze it at 55:08. Dude is up in smokes 😆 Took one of these once for a short test ride with the Misses on the back. Twisted the throttle just a little bit and when I look down at the Speedo I was at 150kph. Insane machines

Guys Guys Work smarter not harder. To remove the race that is in the frame all you need to do is run a bead of weld in the race and when it cools down it will contract the metal and the race will literally fall out. Works an absolute treat. Give it a try. Cheers.

Yup, as i said in another comment the welder is in back but I couldn't move the bike

Like I said last video, that thing had to have been dipped in a lake or river! Such a cool bike! And grab a 1 1/2 inch pvc fork seal driver! And the 4 into 1 is insane on those, they sound like a V8, love it!!

biohazard vmax. that's The most awesomest bestest namest ever. (a few moments later) that word you use to describe its performance was awesome I won't say it so I don't ruin it for others. That's exactly what I thought.

Good call on the wire harness. The best option is to completely remove all the wires and redo it when its been that molested.

Great video, have a soft spot for yamaha bikes. pvc tubes make awesome fork seal drivers in a pinch. I put a bevel on both diameters and cut to length.
