Barn Find Benelli 750 SEI - Unseizing The Engine! How Bad Is It? In this video I finally take a little time to work on the rare Benelli SEI I drug out of a barn last year. Having now obtained the correct socket to remove the park plugs I am able to inspect the cylinders and determine the cause for it being seized. Watch as the bike takes a big step forward with getting it unseized and having more hope for revival down the road.
The first episode where I found the bike: • BARN FIND Benelli 750 ...
Unseizing the engine on my 1975 Honda CB750: • Unseizing A Motorcycle...
Engine inspection on my CB750: • Barn Find CB750 Health...

The largest virus on KZbin is people telling you "You're Wrong!". Just for the future, be wary of that large nut on the end of the crank, on the points side. If it's the same as the CB500\550 Hondas, and I'm almost certain it is, that nut will have a couple of tabs which engage in slots in the crank. The nut is actually held on by a seperate ( M6 ? ) bolt that threads into the crank. To finally get to the point, those two tabs are the only thing that's stopping it from spinning, and if you use the nut to turn the engine over with the plugs in, the tabs can shear off because they are weak. Maybe you can just buy a new nut these days, but back when I was working on them, a lot of the smaller spares were a problem because no-one cared about the bikes, they weren't old enough or well thought of enough to be desireable. My friend has a SEI that he's selling and I could afford it, but I have to accept that because of too many injuries my riding days are over. I'd love to turn that into a classic race replica similar to your plans. Oh well.

The Benelli 750 design was based on the Honda 500 Four. So I guess it’s a bit less surprising that it would have JIS screws. You might find other similarities to Honda products (ie: tappet covers!). Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

@G58
@G58 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, there was no real need for Benelli to use JIS screws, because there must be plenty of European companies producing the more compatible alternatives. And it’s likely that the JIS screws cost more than them. Plus the choice of screw heads after all have no bearing on the overall engine or bike design. However, JIS heads ARE superior to many of the alternatives, except perhaps Allen/Hex Sockets. And we know that Benelli was in full Picasso mode with this one: Stealing from the best!! I remember when I saw my first 750 Sei at the opening day of a new boutique style dealership in the UK Midlands. They were allowing people to test ride most of the Benelli range - except the Sei. As the screaming two stroke triples went off in a cloud of smoke, the 750 just sat there majestically basking in the admiring gazes of every one of us who knew we couldn’t afford it. I’m guessing that was 1977, but the memory is getting foggy. The place was called Davick Motique! Two guys called Dave and Erick with more money than business sense. The enterprise sadly didn’t last long. I did buy my Belstaff wax cotton jacket from them, but it was always a bit odd due to being on display in bright sunlight through the plate glass showroom windows. It’s odd how we store our recollections isn’t it?

Note: when purchasing Acetone, try and locate someone with a Sallys account so you can get 100% the Box store stuff is not 100% I once followed a formula from Bob is the Oil guy forum on adding Acetone to my fuel. 2.5 oz to every 10 gallons. I used my Grand National which was pushing around 525 to the wheels (although a boosted application is always dial up) I averaged about 27 mpg on the freeway during a 1200 mile road trip. Thank you for posting your video, I'm currently working on my 1980 Benelli 900 Sei Mark 2 project, I've installed a bank of six Dell 'Orto 22mm carbs to replace the stock three 24mm units. I also have a modified 750 Sei Silentium six-into-six exhaust system, the 900 has a more vertical cylinder block than the 750, so to avoid the silencers hanging too low the header pipes had to be cut and rewelded at a different angle so that the silencers sit higher up. I also have Tomaselli clip-on bars, a Tomaselli quick action throttle and Paulo Tarozzi rear set foot controls. I have installed an oil cooler from a 1982 Honda CB650SC, Benelli sixes run very hot so an oil cooler is a sensible addition. I'm in no rush to complete the project, I just work on it when I feel the urge, the Benelli last ran in 2010. Benelli only built 1878 of the 900 Sei in a production run from 1979 until 1989, so they weren't mass produced, nothing else sounds like a Benelli Sei.

During the De Tomaso era, Moto Guzzi and Benelli proposed the Italian answer to the Japanese multi-cylinder bikes with the Guzzi four and the Benelli six. Unfortunately, the quality of the materials and workmanship of these engines were much inferior and therefore they were a flop, which is why they sold very little and few of them survive today, therefore they are very rare. As you said, the bike is yours and you can do whatever you want with it, the important thing is to bring a piece of Italian motoring history back to life, even with a custom project.

Some helpful advice for you man. If you have a stuck spark plug (or bolt) turn it a little, spray lube on it, then turn it the opposite way until it's tight. Turn it back again and try to go a little farther. Then spray lube on it and turn it back again until it's tight. Keep working it back and forth like that, trying to move it a little further each time. That will reduce the chances of damaging the threads, especially in aluminum heads or engine parts. Good luck with the build. Should be a cool bike when your done!

From the bore scope videos, to me, it appears like the cylinders have been honed but not run before it was layed? up. The hone marks appear to be “over” the bore wear indications. I would also suggest that you remove all the valve caps and using a suitable lever see if there are any valves stuck, it sounds like there is one stuck down and hitting a piston when you were spinning over with the rear wheel. Just some observations, your doing a great job and a good thing bringing one of these back to life. Looking forward to the next episode.

@@BrickHouseBuilds it’s a little hard watching the video rather than being there in person. In the late 80’s I had an apprentice who was doing a first service on a gs Suzuki 2 valve twin and managed to somehow after removing the rocker cover take the tensioner off and turned the rear wheel backwards to bring the piston to tdc, in the process skipped the cam chain over several teeth and bent the valves and cracked the guides and he did not notice until he started it up and really bent and broke things. Worst bit I was right next to him working on a gsxr1100 and did not notice or twig to his mistakes, and question when he said he needed to use extra thick shims for the valves, till it was to late. Glad it is all going to well and it should actually be an excellent example of the Sei when up and running. Take care.

43:55 IS that reflection? Or is it rust deposit laying down in the bottom of the puddles? I think so. Looks like the compression ring scrubbed off the corrosion and turned it to dust, leaving it at the lowest points as you might expect from iron rust. Unless you find deep pitting in those bores, you might just get away with not requiring rebores and new pistons and rings from your favourite Honda NOS supplier. Very interesting. Really respect the way you’re going about this job. Good luck with the next stage.

Indeed. If it was stock, it would be a crime, a sin even, especially given the rarity of them. I actively dislike most of the modern interpretations of the cafe racer: Mercilessly butchered rear ends; LED strips sewn into BROWN leather seat covers; BIG FAT knobbly front tyres (??WTF??), guaranteeing they will never race anything other than the coffee shop poser’s ego; and the ludicrous Bermuda Triangle of lost opportunities behind the carbs - where imagination goes to cry!!! I swear if I ever meet the lunatic that started such a ridiculous trend (copied by EVERYONE devoid of an original idea or imagination), I may need a Valium to avoid doing serious harm. But this bike has already had a life on the track, so that’s part of its story already. So the same rules obviously don’t apply. My book won’t be available on Amazon. 🧐😎😜👀 Peace

I used the ATF/acetone 50/50 to loosen murderously rusted barrels from an H1. It took several applications and as long as I didn’t apply flame direct to the solution there were no fires. Of course there wasn’t a real “volume” of the solution at anytime either. If I applied moderate heat to the barrel bolt sleeves and added solution it would sputter and very impressively roil rust up from the bottom, and only bringing flame if open flame was evident! Again there wasn’t a volume of solution to concern me.

Great content! If you get an engine unstuck, it will likely run(as evidenced by your recent CB750 revival). Am glad to know that you have future plans for this long-term project, and also looking forward to you getting your CBX put back together and lit off! You got this, man, because you have a lot of knowledge already dealing with these old bikes and all the builds you have done so far. Thanks for another cool video, and keep up the great work!!

Really enjoying your videos so thanks for putting them out for us all. Just an observation but I saw one of these bikes last year and the thing that stood out for me was listening to the tickover. The bike had 6 into 6 pipes and standing behind it listening the the pop of each cylinder from the individual tailpipes was fabulous. Thanks again for the videos I've seen so far as I have a lot of catching up to do.

Nice! I used a similar product as JB Weld on a 6x6 Polaris. A Wurth product. It was for a company that had this old ATV as a backup machine, and they didn’t want to spend $1800 plus labour in a new gear case. I've never heard from them again, so I presume it worked out just fine. I'm looking forward to the next one. Thanks for the upload! 😊👍

Astounding amount of negligence on such an iconic Italian machine. OK the Benelli is not in the SS, Mk1 or SFC league, but still, it breaks my heart. At least she's found a good resurrectionist. Good luck with her. I remember having a 900 Sei for a weekend in 1990.I loved looking at her, loved her sound, but OMG did she have a nasty hinge in the middle. I heard you talking about plugging the holes with rags, I have a helpful tip that might come in handy( especially since it’s too late for you to use it ). You can buy a bucket of foam practice golf balls at Walmart ( well, that’s where I bought mine. I’m sure any sporting goods store would have them ). They are highly water resistant, they are pretty collapsible ( ie: you can jam them into a spot, and they will stay put! ). They are tough enough to withstand soda/walnut hull blasting medium and light carborundum usage, but they will cut in two with it- they’re freakin’ foam after all! You can trim them down for odd shaped holes, and they are cheap as chips, so you don’t have to be precious about them like a silicone plug , and they will bear up better than a rag. Also, they will last a long time, so you can stuff them into an intake track or exhaust port for long term storage. Dirt daubers can’t get past them ( you may not have a problem with mud dauber wasps in Missouri, but in Mississippi, the damn things will ruin your day! ). Hope you get something out of this!

Been binge watching your videos over the weekend. In my working life, I used to repair fire trucks, and the foam compound they used was very corrosive resulting in gate valves and pump lobes seizing up. We found that brake fluid has great penetrating qualities. We would allow it to soak overnight and the following morning see where it had seeped through, which was the previous day an immovable component. Maybe try it next time you have a seized component. Videos are great. Keep up the good work.

My question: Whats the sense to get a 750 sei in that condition? I like the bike, yes, but in this case nearly 70 % of the parts are lost. OK, for the pure enging you need a very good mechanic, but where do you buy all the missing parts? Seat, Tank, exhausts etc...? I dont think that there is a good market for old 750 sei parts. From all the costs and time i dont want to talk.

Thanks so much for posting. I learned a lot and appreciate your methodical approach. I’m trying to unseize my fz 600 engine. I filled the cylinders with Evaporust 3 weeks ago, drained then added MM oil. No luck so back to Evaporust. I’m going slow, taking my time. Question, is it possible to damage the transmission by putting it in 6th gear and rocking the wheel back and forth? It’s not moving at all. I try every day for a few minutes. Any other suggestions? I’d like to free it up before I attempt a top end repair. Yes I have the service manual 😀. Thanks a lot.

Excellent to see this bike turning into a project, You probably know, sei means six in Italian. And too bad that Benelli, Laverda, Moto Morini are all dead. Although Chinese manufacturers have bought the Moto Morini and Benelli brands, it is not the same thing. Even when they claim the bikes they are making under these brands are designed in Italy.

mate of mine bought a new Morini 500 at least 35 years ago. He still has it! I still remember him bringing it around to show it off and we noticied that the rear brake had very little brake fluid in it and wasn'r working. A brand new bike! And I bought the first Ducati 750 GT in Australia in February 1972. The left hand switch block caught fire as I turned into the dealers yard for its first service....

Whether a fan of original condition bikes or not, I would suspect that this one has been previously modified and used too much for this to be viable. I have confidence in your ability to repair the chunks missing from the engine. I would say that personally I think it would look great with a 6>6 exhaust setup (especially if curved like the one in your example photo to show the fairing). However I wouldn't want to do the work or pay the bill for that, and it is your bike

This is example how to not perform this work as well as every profy mechanic says. Disassembly engine from frame put on stand and commence to work...Remove head, acid bath the cylinders, burn rust and use wood and mallet to slightly de-seize them. Next step is pistons rings as must be clean and inspect. What about main bearings shell if they are seized and sticky with crankshaft? Rotating the crank will just rotate them in place and case is closed.... But you are pretty young and have quite enough time ahead of yourself to upgrade the skills....as well as all of us begun like you... so go ahead boy and enjoy back in life these old stuffs

While you are right in that there is of course the ideal way of doing it I feel you miss a few key points. The first major one being that every situation is different and not all situations require perfection. Perfection can often halt progress with case in point being my CBX restoration Ichave underway. Progress is nil as I am chasing perfection with plating my own hardware and sourcing various parts. The second point is practicality in each job. Those same professional mechanics you speak of have all used this method as well when it's the right move for the job. If a customer comes in with a vintage car that has a lightly seized engine who simply wants it to run but isn't wanting a perfectly restored car doesn't need a full rebuild. If it can be safely unseized and brought back to life to suit its owners needs then that is a job well done. Case in point here is my blue cb750 barn find. It was seized on cylinder 1 from sitting 40+ years without plugs. I worked it lose, got it running, and watched compression increase with every check over then next few hundred miles. It has 165psi on all 4 cylinders, doesn't smoke, doesn't use oil, and is my daily rider. No need for a full rebuild. Again I agree that there is a top level way of doing things which professional mechanics do, but I also argue that being able to make these decisions and determine the correct method for the specific job is also the sign of a professional mechanic. Also, I'm not a boy. I'm 36 and do this professionally.

seized engines can be freed up some times by heating oil to boiling point and pouring it very carefully into the cylinders try using a metal funnel for safety reasons allowed the oil to sit a few hours you can try almost immediately or take your time and let it sit overnight if it's stubborn, I've never known this not to work, but this method it a very last resort, guys this it very risky so be careful and it goes without saying, your on your own so take care, please.
