I Bought The WORST Yamaha V-max In The World....Can We Get It Running?

I bought the worst Yamaha V-Max in the world for just $500! Can we get it running? This bike had sat in a barn for at least 10 years where nature was not kind to it. In that time it became a habitat for mice, bugs, and questionable organic material which really trashed the machine top to bottom.
This bike needs a ton of help and even though I bought it cheap at just $500, it is going to cost me far more to make it road worthy. Every nut, bolt, and fastener on the bike is corroded and requires a torch or impact to undo. This one won't be easy....

Well it seems you all were ready for Vmax content as I have been hinting at it for a bit now! I really thought we would have this bike running for this video but the bike had other plans. We will get there and I have lots to show you on the electrical side next video. On another note...bike names for fun: - Peemax - Rat Stink (rat fink reference from a viewer!) - Hazmax (hazzmat suits) What are some of yours?

Max Scabies, because you have rescued her from The Damned. She will live again. You've done a stellar job on fuel, air is going in without restriction, compression (? sounds OK on the starter) so all you need is spark. You've probably solved it all by now anyway but I'd replace the HT leads and plugs because they are almost certainly as crusty at the rest of the bike. If you have one spark, that means at least one coils is OK. Loved this video. Thanks.

Yeah back in the day I purchased a crashed 1985 Honda V65 Sabre and my friend got a mint VMax. Obviously they're similar bikes with the Honda having a larger fuel tank and monoshock rear suspension, but the VMax was a blast to ride until it blew 2nd gear. Good times for sure.

I've got an '85 Max. Bought it new on my 35th birthday. It's needing a bit of carb work, but the bike had never let me down. It's got 136,500 miles on it, never been into the motor farther than clutch and stator replacements. Heartbreaking to see the shape somebody let this bike turn into.

You haven't let anyone down. Great content and I know you'll get there eventually. Progress is actually quite substantial and the VMax is known to be quirky and demanding. In comparison to some of the other 'beauties' you've resurrected this one presents less problems. The wheels revolve as does the crankshaft. You could use the original tank as a custom pepper pot for spicy dishes. Enough of my nonsense, get back on the job.

The V Max motor is a great engine. I have never owned a V Max, but I own two bikes with the detuned version of that motor, a Yamaha Royal Star Venture and a Tour Deluxe. They make 100 horsepower and have been tuned to have cruiser characteristics. It's a shame Yamaha didn't update the motor with fuel injection and upped the HP even more for the V Max and for the Royal Star cruisers. I'd love to have seen a Royal Star Venture or Tour Deluxe with about 120 hp and an optional 145 to 160 tops. When properly maintained, they are bulletproof motors that last a lot of miles.

I don't think I've ever NOT used Shell Rotella T in my bikes. My most recent bike was a 1987 Honda Super Magna which has a wet clutch that's lubricated by the engine oil so, you can't use any oil with friction modifiers in it because it will cause the clutch to slip.

In 1987 I purchased a 1986 V-max new [I was 22]. Some insurance companies were refusing to cover these bikes because of the high fatalities and accident rates [ greenhorns buying them proved fatal for many]. Before this I rode a GS1100E and before that a few Honda 750 fours. The only downside was the shaft effect in the turns [ almost killed me once] and the necessity and expectation to take on every challenger and win. Honestly, winning lost its luster.

Before you start it up, you should check the oil pickup gallery 'O' ring hasn't been pushed out of place by the oil pressure. This problem is an engine killer!! There is a fix that Yamaha made for later models that can be retro fitted to earlier engines as well as a third party bracket to hold the gallery pipe more securely (I would do both as a 'belt & braces' kind of thing). Any Vmax site worth its salt will have articles on this topic. Great to see an original '85 getting some love!

My VMax was the most fun bike I have ever owned and being 74 I have had a little bit of everything. If I could have only one bike back it would be the Max. If you can find a T Boost unit for it (It makes the boost come in at 3000 rpm instead of 6000 rpm) get it. I installed one and although it has a switch to turn it on and off I never turned it off once I tried it. Many bikes are light and fast but that thing was a locomotive crossed with a titan rocket. Hands down the most fun I ever had on two wheels. Also mine had the Super Trapp exhaust which makes it sound like a race bike I highly recommend it the sound is worth every dollar.

When you turn the key on the fuel pump should have turned on for a few secs (clicking sound) and the vboost should cycle (whirling sound opening and closing)> You have the front turn signals staying lit because they are hooked into a double plug inside the headlight bucket (blue wires) there is another double plug they can hook to where they won't stay lit.

Idk what it would take to get with them but aside from that they have what's called Mini Mayhem at Busco Beach (i think in NC, i get NC and SC confused) in October i believe, where you build a ride, more points for wacky ideas (one guy made a go-kart out of a pallet jack and an engine hoist 🤦🏻‍♂️😂), and have like a 3 day hang out/excursion through trails with all their subscribers. @BrickHouseBuilds

Well we showed that we rebuilt the slave and it works perfectly. Sending unit wasn't a focus since we didn't know if the engine was even good. Can't run out of gas if the bike doesn't run. There is no concern for engine paint or it's looks actually.

Ok, to preface my previous comment. My dad worked at D&B Yamaha in Edmond, Ok when the VMAX first came out. I was 14 or 15 and I sat on the showroom model and dreamed about smoking it's tire and chewing up people stop light to stop light so many times! I am 54 now, and still dream about rolling on the power of one of those, hit 6k and let it's teeth come out!

I'm in the process if recommissioning my own 1999 Vmax that has been locked away in a barn since 2006. Love these bikes. With regards to the ignition problem, I know it's probably a stupid suggestion but... check that you have connected the ignition sensors the right way around on the coils? They have the same plug for both banks and can be swapped. Ask me how I found out. (No. Don't.)
