CB750 Side Cover Repair

Honda CB750 Side Cover Repair and painting! Pati takes a HUGE leap forward and now looks very complete as I work to repair and paint side covers to mount on the bike. This video is not intended to be a how to but rather just me thinking through the task at hand and coming up with solutions that best fit this project. There will of course be a lot of different ways to tackle this job so here is simply how I did it.
To repair the covers I first sanded them down and ended with a 120g finish near the repair area. I then cleaned everything before using tape to hold everything in the correct position. From there I used superglue to get the pieces set up. On the backside I used fiberglass that I already had to repair the cracks. I used at least 5 different small pieces for cover and feel it is a strong repair. Once set up I painted them with SEM primer, a custom mixed paint, and Spray max 2k clear before doing a polish for final finish.
With the covers repaired I finished the job with some early badges I also sourced used to fit the look I'm after. The early badges look better to me so it was a fun detail to go after. Once mounted the bike looks so much more complete than it did before and I am super happy with the results! Stay tuned for lots more CB750 content as I continually work to improve this bike.

Not sure if I ever heard of a paint store that will color match rattle can paint. I’ll have to look into it. Keep up the good work on that 750.

for the second cover, generally you will want to drill a hole at the end of the crack. That will relive the pressure on the crack and not make it want to spider out any more. Sometimes you can get away without having to do it but as a general rule of thumb its something that you will want to do most of the time.

@@BrickHouseBuilds If I remember correctly, Honda tended to paint directly onto the plastic or fibreglass, so the base will generally be light. If you use black or dark grey primer, you will knock the top coat down several shades, meaning it’s not possible to get a match. So, if you’re using primer, maybe a white or light grey would be better. And as always, the underside of the tank is the best place to find paint in original condition for a colour reference. Finally, if you put some petroleum gel on the side panel rubber mounting bungs, it will take less effort to pull them off, and put less strain on the thing going forward. Nice work. Ride safe. Peace

You probably already know this but if you want super glue to dry instantly you apply it and then dump on some baking soda. It will dry instantly to the touch within like one second and it's a really hard secure connection. I've used it on my saddlebags for my 1982 Honda Goldwing and it works perfect. Then you don't even have to mix any fiberglass resin and fiberglass sheet. You probably already knew that already anyway. Like your videos keep it up

Good to know these side covers are fixable. Paint looks great. I think Honda did a silver base coat then covered it with the blue...that's what gave it the metallic look.

I bet thats 100% accurate. The black primer definitely gave a darker shade as well but I claim to be no expert when it comes to paint. I'm happy with my results though.

I watched the timelapse first and you didn't talk about the subtle color difference and the visual remnants of the cracks. I couldn't see them in that video since you didn't point them out. I really like the options presented by you trying to retain the patina. The side panels turned out great. When I watched the longer video first, I thought to my self, "great, he's a body guy too!" Your messing around turned out better than anything I could do.

Hello BJ, I know you said you weren’t experienced at the painting side of things, however I think you achieved a pretty good job there. And like anything else you will learn as you go which is the best way. The panels looked great. Honda used a candy style paint a lot back then so I guess looking at it the silver base coat, then candy blue lastly the lacquer coat. You can usually tell when flatting the old paint the top coat appears white when the lacquer is rubbed down. ( l still have a rusty tin of Regal blue candy from the seventies in my shed!) painted my 250 K4 in around 1978. Matching candy can actually be easier in some respects as the colour coat can be thinned and built slowly to gain the desired depth of colour. You can even rub a little away here and there to give an aged appearance. Well I think I’ve rattled on a bit! Great video thanks again keep it up, Kevin.

I'm loving the repair not replace ethos. Also, just respecting the age. It's refreshing. I know there are people now who think patina is a kind of paint. Sigh. Age is just what it is. And in any case it is not actually decay or - groan - rust. There's another word for that. It's called neglect. There's another comment on looking under the tank for the closest to factory colour. But that's missing the point of working with the colour the time has created: sun, rain and other elements. If echo the thoughts about defaulting to a grey primer though, using a match the way you did to blend with your real paint. Black means darker, white means lighter, at least without lathering on a ton of top coat. Oh and kudos for doing what you want with your bike. That's just great too.

Using black primer was actually kind of a dumb move on my part and it didn't cross my mind until I put color on it. There are bigger things in my life to worry about currently and I'm keeping this one fun.

My biggest enjoyment of your project is that I learned something about applying fiberglass. One of the body panels on my BMW has a slight crack in the paint. Project for this summer will be to lay some fiberglass on the back side to stiffen it up.

Biggest recommendation I could offer is don't add too many layers of glass at 1 time. 1st remove damaged or delaminated material. Then try adding about 2 layers at a time and allow 24 hours to setup before sanding. After initial layers on the back, grinding the crack out and filling in with a mix of resin and chopped glass, then add mat over the top of the fill, and roll it down to remove air bubbles. This should give a very solid long-lasting repair.

Dude, those both look great. It's a pleasure to learn along with you on the multiple aspects of these machines. I did a facelift of an '83 KZ Ltd in the late 2000s. The thing had been laid down and rear ended, but ran like a sewing machine. I gave it a few ebay parts, paint, pipes, drag bars and cafe fairing and rode it like I stole it! There's just no match for that sense of accomplishment I felt with every twist of the throttle. I wanna restore a '79 KZ1000 next, and every one of these vids just feeds that fire! Great Repair Work. I am painting my secondary Tank for the XL250. Electrolysis, Sandblasted, 2 part Primer. Fiber glass filler on small dents, Another coat of primer and Base Coat Deep Purple Metallic. Not done yet.

Those covers look awesome! Nice job with the fiberglass. It doesn't work on a lot of the covers. Gotta get yourself an inexpensive rig for welding plastics! It's stupid easy to do. Reasonably simple to do well with a bit of practice. They work great. Much like tig welding. I have much appreciation for folks that value and renew the original parts in these wonderful old bikes. Kudos! I'd be out working on or riding mine if this damn hurricane Nicole would head on out! LoL

I detail bikes get scratchs out with a Rotary machine polisher.. You can use Whiteshark fk1000p wax on the rims as well it is a wax sealant, will last over winter.

Great job. I have found that ABS cement, the black stuff for black sewer pipes, make a great resin for this type of repair. It sticks to the plastic better than epoxy. I used to fix the old Vetter fairings and epoxy would stress break away from the plastic at the edge of the repair but ABS cement stayed put seemingly forever.

@@BrickHouseBuilds You can make the cement yourself with some acetone and ABS-plastic, LEGO type of plastic i excellent.. Cut the plastic in small pieces and put them in a jar and pour a bit of acetone in the jar. Not a lot, only just enough to make a paste to smear over the cracks. It’s important to chamfer the grooves in the cover the way you did, so the homemade glue can get a groove to stick to. Sorry about my lousy english, hope you understood it.

You could have shot the side with the teeny tiny remnants of the seam again and then sanded it down, kind of fill them with more paint kind of thing. But I think you do great work. And the reason those side covers crack is the grommets in the frame harden and make it difficult to remove the side covers. Pull too hard and the cover cracks. The grommets are available brand new and are much softer and allow easier cover removal. Had to change them n my vintage Honda’s. Love your excellent videos!

We use carbon fiber cloth plus Cyanoacrylate thin ca glue on the back. You can V the front fill with thin CA. I zip tie mine to the bikes..

Many many ways to do the repairs , like the colour did the metallic show up any better after the clear coat. Badges exactly how I would have done taking the eye from good and bad so to speak . Surprised you didn't hot glue the badges on . Like the little touch of heat to get the grommets a bit softer many a panel been repaired and broken on those on refit . Cheers for sharing .

@@BrickHouseBuilds I've just got a wire staple type soldering iron cheap as chips and looks crap n nasty but I was surprised it did the job . Could be worth a look as a different method as well .

If you wait till the layed up glass isn't tacky anymore, you can trim off the excess with a sharp razor. Cuts down on need to grind it down with power tools.

Yes just didn't want to gum up my scissors and such. Since I had to use the tools anyway it was no big deal.

Great job. Now your main concern will be to keep them from cracking again. They become very brittle over time. I broke mine just gently pulling it off the rubber mount.

Greetings from the UK!.. I have to say I really like yopur approach on this bike and it's just great. bikes can be over-restored and then you don't ride them as much. just need to do something with the seat cover!.. as an aside, I have a 1981 KZ650 amongst my bikes , that was suffering poor running, but thanks to your diagnosis video on this Honda I was able to diagnose a poor coil, so please continue doing what you do. I really enjoy all your stuff. My kZ650 is similar to your honda in the fact that it's by no means perfect and gets ridden in most weathers. once again, I think your films are just great, so keep on doing wha you're doing!.. cheers Andy.... oh, another thing.. do you do any shirts or other merchandise and would you ship to the UK? Well thank you! Agreed on the over-restored under-ridden issue. As I do custom bikes I see that as well as they become so nice you don't ride them in fear of getting dust on them lol. The "body work" on those side panels turned out real fine. It suits the overal looks of the bike, which has honest patina. Personaly I like it this way as it is a bike that is aged, but is looking very well. Hey for what it is worth, it is only my opinion.
