In this episode, I recovered the seat of my CB750 project bike. I am building this bike to be a road-going runner, not a full restoration. The bike is a bitsa, and didn’t come with a seat when I first got it. I bought the seat that I am restoring from a large national breaker. I knew that it would require recovering, but it turned out to be a little worse than I expected.
Here's what I used in this video:
Rust converter: ebay.us/7scnRS
Seat cover: ebay.us/CYT7AM
I only intended to recover the seat, but when took the cover off, and removed the seat foam I found that the seat pan was very rusty. Although it looked quite bad, it was all surface rusty, but very crusty.
I decided to treat the rust with a rust converter, then paint it with some two-pack paint so that the rust wouldn’t easily recur. It came out quite well in the end. Certainly not a concours finish, but it should be serviceable for another few decades.

Turned out nice. Here in Florida we just set it out in the sun and it heats up and smooths out. Looking good!!

Enjoyed the video. I do all of my own seat restoration and like to see how others do it, in case I can learn something new. I must admit that I was prepared to quickly look away when you were cutting the strip in bottom edge of the seat. Over the years, I have had the occasional little mishap, and hoped I wasn't going to see you have one as well. 👍

I have done a few seats over the years, everyone seems to be a little different, and I have had a few mishaps doing them. Currently I am trying to work out how to put a pad on my Cafe Racer seat. I've had a few ideas, but nothing that I am happy with yet.

I enjoy and am amazed with the the amount of knowledge you have regarding cb750s.Do you consider doing work on other people's bikes. Cheers Dave from Sheffield

Thanks for the kind words Dave, really appreciate that! I'm still learning as I go really, but having done one before I've gained quite a lot of confidence with these CB750s now. Not really thought about working on other peoples bikes, seems like I've got too many of my own projects on at the minute to take on anyone else's. But maybe i'd consider it in the future if I end up with a bit more space.

Ty for sharing, but why did you put glue on the seat and what kind. I'm guessing it was something for rust but you didn't explain. Yet you explained when taking off the rust. Well we could figure that one out but what was the product. And the paint. What kind os it? Was it rustoleum if not what was it. Please explain the product and nevermind explaining about taking off the rust with wire brush

Thanks for the questions. I put the glue on to hold the cover in place while fastening it back on. I find that the cover can slip if you don't glue it, so that it ends up slightly to one side. I usually just do the centre portion. The glue is spray glue like the one on this link, ebay.us/wO5w8V. I treated the base with KurRust, then sprayed it with 2k Black. If I was hand painting I would have used Rustoleum or Hammerite smooth black. I hpe this helps.

Hiya good video on the seat, im just doing the same thing, the original seat cover has the seat attached to the chrome trim. I noticed you used some clips to hold the repro cover in place before refitting the chrome trim - where did you get those clips? Thank you
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, most of the reproduction covers seem to come with the clips you need, but you can get them on ebay if you need them here: ebay.us/ILjZZe Hope that helps!

There's too much fast forwarding. Where did you get the clips installed on the lip of the pan to secure the cover as you were pulling it tight before trimming? Where did you get the chrome strip, did you salvage it from the original seat? Maybe this is all explained in a different video. I'm trying to recover a very similar CB550 seat, thanks

Hi Carl, the clips came with the cover. But some seats don't use clips. They use hooks in the seat pan or the plastic trim strip holds the cover on. Maybe try looking at my K0 seat video which may help. here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jonWeXeKfrxokKc Good luck!

@@SPANNERRASH Ya the CB550 is the same the strip holds it in. But the strip is glued onto the old seat cover. I'll try to separate it. Thanks for the reply!
