Bricklaying How to move and brick up a door

In this video tutorial I am removing the back door and relocating it and bricking up the hole. This is to make the out house into a study and give new access to the kitchen..

In my day there were none of these quick aids to brick removal, just bloody hard work with the plugging chisel and lump hammer !

Quite good. A bit less cement in the new mortar would make it less grey colour and blend in better with the old mortar.

Nice job Chris, only thing I would say is that it's easier to fill the bed joints on the toothing up as you go. Other wise they might not be properly packed with muck.

Hi, thanks for the enquiry. I assume you mean a wall without cavity! If thats the case then there are recommended guid standards and its usually every three meters. Also there are products that strengthen the wall. Some building inspectors will want to incorporate a mesh into the runs as well as having peers! I hope this has helped- regards.

Hi, great job. Where you cut out the new door, are the sawn bricks not visible as the wall returns slightly into the dooway? Or did you make the frame meet the face? What would you do if the new doorway was to be inset 100mm or so, like on a lot of british terraces?

Hi chris .. i am currently in the process of doing moving my back door 3 metres and putting it where some windows are (removing windows obviously) ... I See you have toothed out the bricks on the outside which i shall have to do to maintain a good strong join and look of the wall.. what have you used on the inside skin of the wall, i can see blockwork but what kind of blocks (Dense, breeze, Concrete?) also how did you join then to the inside wall ?? Many thanks for all the videos you post i have used a few of them to do jobs on my own house.

Hi, sorry just seen your post-:(...I used dense block as I got them off another job, can use lighter blocks however. I used wall starters which you can get from most builders merchants or alternatively you could use a wall strap and bend it to a 90 degree and screw it to the middle part of the block work, or knock a toothing section that will take half a block! Hope this has helped...
