We're proud to be sponsored by James Hardie, the global leaders in manufacturing fibre cement products. Be sure to check out their exciting range of products here: bit.ly/3kpdtRd
In this episode from our single story extension, Joe first takes on the task of hand digging the hole to bury the silt trap, then connect silt trap to soakaway via the 6 inch perforated pipe. Alex has the job of setting out brickwork on the concrete footing using the laser level. There is great time lapse bricklaying the first course combined with some blockwork too.There is also the task of getting the concrete lintels between the footings in place. Joe and John are digging rain water gully and then connect pipework to silt trap and lay it in pea gravel. Joe mixes up a slurry 3 in 1 concrete mix to fill holes in perforated engineer bricks. To give the Cormidi C85 room for access the guys have the job of removing godfather post using the concrete breaker hammer. To end the day we see the delivery of the block and beam.
PLEASE NOTE: we’ll endeavour to answer questions and comments as soon as possible depending on our work schedules.

Nice job, one question though. Why filling the bottom layer of the brick? This isn't adding to its strength, while reducing insulation quite a bit.
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Filling the perforated engineers ensures they are solid. These bricks are the base for the block and beam floor, so insulation properties at that level are irrelevant, as they are not part of the insulated envelope. Hope this helps. All the best, John 👷🏼‍♂️

Why not use a 7n block instead of the perf engineers ?
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
It's all about getting our levels right for each stage of the build. Using the engineers gave us a bit more breathing room for finished floor levels. It's better to put in a bit more screed, than having to put less in 👷🏼‍♂️ Hope this helps. All the best, John 😊
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
A block flat is 100mm and an engineer is 65mm, which gives us an extra 35mm of clearance when calculating the finished levels. Hope this helps. All the best, John

John - could you explain more on why using solid engineering bricks is less cost effective that using perf's then having to go over them again with cement fill? It seems counter-intuitive to me.
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, The perfs were available at a much better price than solids, and after factoring in two men for half an hour and one mix, it was a more cost effective option. Hope this helps. All the best, John
