Well done guys. Hard work fiddling the first steel into the chimney and hearth. Next time, you might find it easier if you trim the top of the joists a few mm more so they dont bind on the steel and allow you to wind them up a touch if needed during installation. The house is going to be so different when you’ve finished. Looking forward to further updates. Definitely needed your client 'labourers' today!

Top job, most builders would not consider profiling the joists to sit in the web, placing it below so visible and would need boxing in. If the bearings were in place, you have the option of pre-deflecting the beam before bricking up above using cold chisels and/or a scissors jack to bend it by the amount of dead load deflection stated in the calculations. This minimises the minor cracking to the brickwork after the props are removed. Not so important here as the house is to be plastered but important in blocks of flats to try and reduce the amount of cracking in the flat above.

Happy the New Year and wishing you continued sucess in 2025 ! That was great. It must be a stressful day for everyone putting in a steel beam. My neighbours did one on their side of our semi-D. Then 6 months later a large crack developed from the corner of the end of the beam up along the render on my side. Aaaaand they didn't want to know about it ....

Second Question, @32:15, does mortar bond to steel?
@SteveAndAlexBuild10 күн бұрын
It does, just 🧱👍🏽
@davidconnolly734612 күн бұрын
Steve do you have a problem with a mortar bed directly on the steel beam, it will crack? With a lintel no bed so not an issue. Is that steel beam exposed forever, it looks like it. Shouldn’t that steel beam have a cavity flashing and weep holes?

Hello why was there no damp tray installed ?
@Sean00613 күн бұрын
There must be an extension going on the side of the house, hence the exposed steel. The cavity tray would have to go above the roofline or else the cavity tray would vent inside the extension. Guessing somewhat.

I was lucky enough to work at a engineering construction company before I retired. We had an extension put up at the end of the first lockdowns. We were still working through it so I fabricated all the steels in my spare time. Over *2 tonne of steel cost me about £1,500 , 1.7 tonne fully galvanised. I had all the design, certificates and our company has CE classification. I reckon it would have been nearer £5,000 if I had to pay someone to fabricate and transport it.
