Yeah I myself never got into lego technic (not sure why this channel shows up in my feed every once in a while actually but it I'm glad it does) but I can still appreciate that some serious talent is on show here. Especially with keeping the turret aiming in the same place and stabilized while the tank body is rotating. Modern-ish+ tanks do that but they do it with gyroscopes and computers and stuff so it's really neat one can pull off the same thing with lego. Guess you can stick something equivalent to a Raspberry Pi on technic stuff and inject code into those things? At least that's the only way I can imagine doing some of this stuff - maybe I'm overthinking it.
@unedited82042 жыл бұрын
@@angry_zergling That's really interesting, I wouldn't have known any of that but what you say makes sense. To be honest, I COULD be wrong but I think this is just good old (or rather new) Lego Technic mechanics and whizzy-whirring cogs and wheels here. I suppose, although I'm not an engineer so maybe I'm wrong here, on a smaller scale (than life-size tanks) there is more scope to achieve physically stable and functional systems without any "intelligent"/code-driven inputs... But I don't know! I do know they use AI and stuff with Lego for some purposes, e.g. to run Lego machines which can solve a Rubik's Cube, for obvious reasons. But I got the impression in this video it was just extremely sophisticated mechanics and wires and basic controls.

10:45 I was surprised to find that ~3500 RPM was enough to pull the rubber of the wheel! Why did you use chain instead of direct gear meshing here? If I've understood correctly, the friction loss is higher with the chain.
@pwnmeisterage2 жыл бұрын
I think the plastic would be too soft, the Lego gears would strip too easily when the tank bumps into resistance. A lot of power loss and seizing after just a few teeth fall out, a lot of time to rebuild, a lot of money to buy more Lego. The chain pieces are made of the same plastic but they distribute the load over surfaces instead of concentrating it on small parts of small parts.
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
@@pwnmeisterage I would assume that the little studs holding each chain piece together would break much more easily but it makes sense that if something breaks, it's better to break a single chain link than a full gear.

Also: Since your card-loading mechanism utilizes a mid-width friction wheel, you could easily get away with trimming dog-eared corners of the cards in the magazine -so long as you don't trim opposing corners or alter the dimensions such that your launching flywheel won't purchase after the card is indexed. You could be cheeky and change the wheel out for an asymmetrical loading "finger" -which you could feasibly integrate alongside a timing linkage to clamp down as the card is leaving the magazine and prevent additional cards from entering the flywheel simultaneously. Would you have any interest in creating a variant turret to fire Technic shafts/rods at semi/full auto? Or a more involved project where you can alter the length/width of ammunition the assembly can launch via a transmission? I would love to submit a video reply going over the concept and detailing what gear ratios work best for the munition variables... But I suffer from a crippling lack of parts/components after basically losing around 90-95% of my worldly possessions in 2018.

@@BrickTechnology I have an amusing personal story for you, regarding my younger years and my Lego projects... Which often had my engineer father exclaiming "yeah, I think it's safe to say that he's my child." I had just received my first Technic kit for either my seventh or ninth birthday. After building the two projects in the instruction manual, I disassembled it down to base components and, after some contemplation, appeared to arrive at a conclusion... About an hour later, I show up in my father's office, holding some boxed in assembly and a 9v power unit. He asked me what I had made. "Watch..." I started it up, and moved a lever. A fan blade on the exterior spun faster, slower, and in reverse upon toggling the lever. It quickly dawned on my father what I had done: without any manual, guide, or instructions, I had built a fully functional five-speed transmission. I had no interest in cars or automotive mechanics, and this was well before Wi-Fi, much less readily accessible high speed internet. Needless to say, after several more similar incidents, it was decided that it would be for the best if I was not allowed in any way shape or form to study chemistry.
