BRIDE AND PREJUDICE: India, America, England, Bollywood music and Gurinder Chadha directing! What more could you want? Well...maybe a Mr Darcy who actually appeals, and a Lizzy stand-in with whom he has some chemistry? But can't have everything, right? How to pitch a Lizzie Bennet character, why this Mr Darcy doesn't quite work for me, and how Bridget Jones' Diary did a similar thing but made it work.

Bride and Prejudice is a pretty movie, but... you need someone who is second in beauty to someone else and you choose AISHWARYA RAI? WTH? She's the most beautiful person in the room regardless of the room, the people inside and the age of the cosmos.

I’ve noticed that as a theme in Pride & Prejudice adaptations in general. Jane is supposed to be the pretty one, so why is Elizabeth *always* prettier than Jane?
@isabelguzmanmiranda5025
@isabelguzmanmiranda5025 3 жыл бұрын
@@spookyspice596 It's not always. In the BBC version, a lot of people might prefer Jennifer Ehle to Susannah Harker, but Harker seems taken straight away from a regency period picture: Harker is THE beauty standard of the time, people prefer Ehle, but that's our standard. In Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which in my opinion was surprisingly accurate to Austen's mocking and satirical tone, Jane is also prettier than Elizabeth (according to certain standards), but it is easy to think Lizzy more attractive because her personality shines more. As the 2005 version goes, Keira Knightley is certainly too beautiful for a Lizzy Bennet. I sure think she is prettier than the girl who was chosen as Jane. But that version is just a romance movie, not very Austen-esque, so that would make sense.

a bunch of years too late but yeah - its a bollywood thing xD... also, canonically lizzie was polite and yes a part of it comes from the period but also it is imp. to note that because when lizzie rejects him, he is taken aback. he had no clue at all that she disliked him. at worst, he assumed she was neutral. So yeah, the outright hostility doesn't work at all. and yes - Colin Firth ♥️♥️

One thing that endlessly frustrates me about modern Rom-Coms is that they have no reason for the two leads to be in love. Darsey loves Lizzy because she's kind, and witty, and has positive traits which he admires. Whereas many modern Rom-Coms take "in love" as a matter of circumstance. As if love is a matter of fate rather than mutual respect and appreciation. You can't love somebody without loving things about them. Also, nice cross.

Yeah I agree with you. Coincidentally, I once had to write an essay for a literature course about the depiction of love in literature and how the view of a relationship has changed over time. And it is exactly how you describe it, nowadays love is circumstancial, a stroke of fate, star-crossed lovers - and if you look at love in older novels, for example in the 16th/17th century, there's a totally different depiction of love: love is fickle and unreliable, many lovers come and go, it never quite means anything, it is all a game, they're all players on the stage of etiquette and manners - and by the 18th century, it is mainly pragmatic. You try to find someone you like for the person they are. And it's got nothing to do with fate, it is a very conscious choice. Your lover isn't elevated into sheer saint-like spheres, the concept of "the one" is not established yet, that's a very, very modern thing.

I’d have to re-watch but I think it’s most that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Martin Henderson didn’t have amazing chemistry. I have to blame Henderson for that, mostly, as he just isn’t that great of an actor. Knowing Aish’s body of work, she has amazing chemistry with other male leads. I get what you’re saying about the blatant dislike for no apparent reason vs. rejection of Darcy due to his misjudgment and bad action towards a beloved older sister. But you must realize this is India and it was right for them to tweak Lizzie’s character to fit the narrative. India still feels the devastation of Imperialism and it is a very deep wound still felt intensely by her people. I think it was entirely appropriate for Aish to have played Lalitta that way because it’s what knocked the American rich white boy mentality on his butt. Too often such a person is catered to because being in their favor can mean one is hired and lifted out of poverty or, at least, out of the intense financial burdens of Indian middle class. Having lived in India (both the north & south), it is easy to live in a white person’s bubble and just think that the reason lower income people agree with you or attend to you is because you’re intrinsically special. It’s easy to get a big head and to get in the habit of calling the shots without asking people their opinions. I’ve seen a lot of white people get a hero complex rather than see it for what it is, disgusting white privilege. It’s what happens when those with economic power wield it without considering the impacts and implications or partnering with local stakeholders and empowering the community to make decisions. To not do so is wrong and it hurts the nation as a whole in ways most will never see. I love that Lalitta isn’t impressed by that and bursts Darcy’s bubble. It is a rude slap in the face, but it wakes Darcy up to a different reality and perspective than he’d had previously. Darcy doesn’t even realize there is another perspective until Lalitta says something. She is the first person brave and independent enough to speak truth and open his eyes. It’s as he examines himself and his family’s practices that he realizes his actions will truly hurt others and it’s not part of his values system. So he changes. That is when Lalitta sees that he isn’t what she thought - he was simply blind. That he heeds her words and makes the change opens her heart to see him as he really is. IDK. Just some thoughts.

The issue in Bride & Prejudice is that extra element added of a HUGE culture clash. I think that allows for a bit more leeway in the exchanges between Lalita and Darcy, but it's a much bigger issue than can be just glossed over in a short rom-com. These are real issues that would come up over and over again in a relationship - even if it's just simple misunderstandings. I think they did the best they could with it.

Same. And I honestly don't get people's constant complaints about chemistry in so many films and shows - or the way a seriously wrong relationship gets a pass because 'they have such great chemistry!' Okay, in real life if you have chemistry with someone, it's not visible. It's how you feel about each other and outsiders probably won't see it. Books tell you what the characters are feeling so you know if there is chemistry. In films or onstage they have to somehow express the inexpressible without it being over the top or cheesy. Sometimes that happens in how the actors interact with looks and body language - but in actual fact that's very subjective and not realistic even if it is swoon-worthy. The important thing, in my book, is whether the characters say and do romantic, thoughtful, friendly, respectful, and/or just generally healthy-relationship things for each other. And when unhealthy relationship things come up, as they always must because drama and conflict, do they resolve them? That is what makes it a great romance, not whether the actors who aren't actually in love or have the personalities of the real characters have 'chemistry.' That's not really what makes relationships work - chemistry feeling on the inside does to an extent, but chemistry looking-like on the outside really isn't necessary to prove two people care about each other. I don't know ANY real couples like that!

When they go to the hotel in Goa, Lalita sees the situation the way a native Hawaiian sees five star hotels on their island. Honestly, that scene was amazing, I don’t understand what you don’t get. I’m no pro at Bollywood style or choices, but if there was something you thought weird jarring or didn’t make sense, I thought they were heavily influenced by Bollywood. I loved Bride and Prejudice.... though I totally get what you're saying about the lack of chemistry between the two leads. I did also have a problem with the chase through London at the end that is supposed to be the stand-in for retrieving Lydia from Wickham. In a modern context, the tension that "OMG we MUST save Lydia from a FATE worse than DEATH" just felt a little overwrought, and I don't see Wickham running away from them being realistic. I feel like there could have been a better way to script that entire sequence without sacrificing the faithful adherence to the original storyline. Would LOVE to see that discussed somewhere!

It feels like you missed a point on Darcy's personality. You blame all his stiffness on social aquardness, even though you admit to his arrogance. It seems to me that class consciousness is also a key here. The society he finds himself in is beneath where he sees himself. As he falls for Lizzie, he has also become aquainted with here family, which are true liabilities. His love has to overcome his disgust for the family that he will be bringing into his life.

@4Freedom4All In the epilogue of the book Jane Austen talks about how Jane and Elizabeth bring their younger sisters much more into their lives and Kitty benefits the most from the increased attention and everyone becomes a better person for it. Darcy is very protective of his sister Georgiana, and he sees that Elizabeth is very protective of her sisters. He probably had the sense to see that there was inadequate parenting happening because of how the three youngest girls turned out, and correctly blamed Mr and Mrs Bennet. Lydia became an attention seeker because her dad ignored her and she got her mom’s attention by acting up, plus she’s 15 and still a child. She was supposed to be a boy, because the Bennets were counting on having a son to determine inheritance rights, and her dad probably hated her for it.

I feel it's the fashion nowadays to excuse Darcy's pride as mere 'social awkwardness.' Austen made it very clear that he was proud and he was wrong to be proud and so he had to change - 'As a child I was taught what was RIGHT, but I was not taught to correct my temper.' Social awkwardness is not a fault to be corrected. So it annoys me when people define Darcy this way too. The moral of Pride and Prejudice is that you can love faulty people and that people can change, not that we should pretend their faults don't exist. Darcy had real faults, my fellow ladies. Deal with it 😜

Ash is a wonderful actress. When I watched this movie I was so disappointed - the relationship made me gag - the difference between the skills of the two main actors can’t be emphasized enough. It does take some time to understand the elements that are common among Bollywood movies of that time and it’s worth doing but not by watching this film. If you want to see Ashwariya Rai as the tour de force that she is, I suggest starting with Guzaarish or Devdas. She works alongside two of the most famous actors in Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan respectively and Devdas is one of the most important films from Bollywood as well as one of her most famous works. Also look for anything with her playing alongside Amir Khan. She didn’t deserve to be brought down by this movie. The other movie that was a disaster was set in SAN FRancisco and taken from an absolutely brilliant book, The MIstress of Spices. It’s unclear whether the movie stunk because the themes in the book were either watered down to the mundane, they were simply dropped or the actor is, once again, out of his league. Frankly I think it’s hard for any half baked actor, Indian or American to keep up with this wonderful actress and international beauty . I know that may be irrelevant but it does make her movies a sight for sore eyes - in Bride and Prejudice they actually made her look less than beautiful, and did it badly. She has been in a number of films where her beauty was disguised in favor of the character - this isn’t one of them. Nice video you’ve got here.

It has been years and years since I read Bridget Jones, but I feel like there is more witty banter in the book than the film. I recall a particularly witty bit about an absent skirt, though that wasn't coming FROM Bridget but directed to her. My issue with Lizzie Bennet Diaries is that it seems like the actor playing Darcy took other characters acting him out in Costume Theatre which was plainly overacted as what Darcy should actually be like. Lizzie thinks Darcy is wooden and acts him out as wooden, but then Darcy shows up and actually is wooden and it just doesn't work. .

I don't know what you are talking about. Bride and Prejudice is an Indian adaptation. And what is India famous for? SPICES. There is no harm watching a Spicey version of Elizabeth Bennet who I guess would react the same way if she was raised in an educated Indian family in this era. There is a witty banter but its mostly Lalita's innate pride about her country and her identity which Darcy kind of poked. He did believe India was a hellhole at first and had little to no respect for Indians. You won't understand this until you are on the other side of racism. But then Darcy is shown to be sweet and caring, and sensitive, and in fact respectful about India which ultimately wins her respect. I think this was a brilliant version. I loved it, skipping the songs it was good and fun and far more enjoyable than I ever hoped for.

I completely agree with you. I think that a lot of people don't realize just how rude the original Darcy character was because of all the old-world courtesy - they hear the long polished phrases and think 'oh, he's such a GENTLEMAN' *swoon* and don't realize that what he is actually saying is extremely rude and condescending! And girls in that actual era would have been insulted and not attracted by it until he changed. Just like criticizing someone else's culture when you know nothing about it! I thought Bride and Prejudice was so clever in how it translated a story about outdated class issues into relevant modern culture clash. It made perfect sense to me. The point is the guy had to learn that he can't respect the woman he loves if he doesn't respect her background. Doesn't matter if it's class, cultural, educational, societal or technological background we're talking about. I have an idea for a modern P&P version about a tech geek Darcy who proudly looks down on 'dinosaurs' and a technophobe Elizabeth who is prejudiced against modern technology! It could work!

No, you're absolutely right! Both that Bride and Prejudice's Darcy is kinda never really likeable (I can't ever get on board with him either, every time he's quiet or not there the movie SHINES) but also that Bridget Jones' Diary is very much a modern AU PnP and I'm so glad to see it acknowledged (they even got Mr. Darcy to be played by... Mr. Darcy)

I HATE Briget Jones Diary, She is awful and mean and there is nothing endearing or cool or special/unique about her except that she is the biggest mess. WHAT THE HELL DOSE HE LIKE HER FOR? I just do NOT get it at all... Maybe there was something that I missed about her... I would be verry glad if someone could point something out, anything, it dose not have to be anything like how Lizzie is special, but she has to have SOMETHING! I really enjoyed the video. Before I could not put my finger on why I could not get as invested in to B&P, but that was exsactly it!

I absolutely adore Bridget Jones, she knows she's not "cool" or does not fit in but owns up to it and stands her ground. I find her very endearing and funny as well without being mean, really. I guess the only thing that rubs me the wrong way is the strong focus on her weight but who could blame her?? Especially in the 90's where Kate Moss was the absolute IT girl and before the body positive movement. I could talk about her all day, she's the most relatable character of all time yet manages to be interesting while Elizabeth feels a bit to smart with always something witty to say when it's never the case in reality for most of us. I think Darcy likes her because she is full of life. In the end, I think she would be better off with someone like Cleaver because Darcy seems to small for her. Sorry for the long answer!

@@naastyaaaaaaaaa Hiii, I'm slightly obsessed with this franchise (actually writing a full-length essay on it to get it out). First of all, what I'm meant by someone like Cleaver is not a pick-up artist that uses negging on an already very insecure person, but someone fun. I don't think it's necessarily the lack of emotional response as much as Darcy would be small for her because it seems she would be the sole provider of fun and lightness (which is something he craves). It is not entirely true because we see fun parts of him at the beginning of the second movie but once that storyline on Thailand starts, this movie just gets bad. That character development is simply just gone! They like each other because they like the fantasy of having a tall, elegant brooding partner for Bridget and a clumsy but fun and funny woman for Darcy but problems are bound to come up from both sides if they remain like this. In this essay I will... Hahah, hopefully that makes it more clear!
@bisambre4601

@4Freedom4All I agree with how the emphasis on the weight went from relatable to "pls stop" but I don't think it really qualifies as fat babbling as everyone around her insinuate she's fat. It's only us the reader (because we have her mensurations)/viewer (because we see her) that say she is not. Now I see why she could be seen as lame but I disagree. Finally someone that is not a #girlboss but has 1. great friends 2. A great apartment 3. Fulfilling job. Even her love life isn't that lacking but it's the fact that everyone considers her lame that makes her think she is. Rather than lame I see her as an underdog that you root for. Could you name female underdogs? I could name 3 and they are all from French movies AND most importantly their most defining trait is the fact that they are shy. Bridget isn't shy, she takes too much place for some people and is clumsy. Honestly, I think Darcy has more reasons to like her than her to like him. However I think that Mark Darcy is much more charming than Fitzwilliam Darcy. The thing is that Darcy realizes way to late how awful he comes across in P&P. He insults her twice (ball+proposal) but changes his way sooo late. What women would give him another chance after how awful he has been? In BJD, he insults her once and then tries to make up for it quite quickly. Chemistry is hard to manufacture so you either feel or you don't and there is no right or wrong answer, if you d'ont see it than it just doesn't work. I personally see it, especially in the dinner scene with the couples or the blue soup scene (my personal favourite) but I agree that it's subtle and wished for more which is something that we could have sequels but... NOW ON THE SEQUELS, they are awful. The second movie starts off really well although went from "The Office" type of fun cringe in the first movie to vulgar. In the first movie, you laugh at the situation and the character that you identify to are aware of the grotesque but in the second one the humor just gets crass. Nevertheless you can see the chemistry at the beginning and they set interesting issues to be solved: class difference and getting over the fantasy that you made up. Right after the pregnancy test, the second movie starts to go off the rails and then when she goes to Thailand it's awful. Bridget becomes so despicable. She talks about Mark TO DANIEL, the very man that his wife cheated him on. The sole fact that she went his hotel room (or talked to him but to each their own boundaries) should have been a deal breaker for Mark. But noooo, once he's being told that she didn't sleep with Daniel, all is well in the world BUT she would have if it wasn't for the Thai prostitute (haha so fun...). None of the stakes that were set up are solved and those problems are bound to come back. At the end, the proposal felt so out of place. You guys have been together for 3 months top, you might want to test it out a bit longer no? For the third movie, I was straight up rooting for Patrick Dempsey. They are literally in their forties with a child on the way and can't seem to have a meaningful conversation. The writers made her go back with Darcy out of nostalgia.

So i think Rai doesn't even try to create chemistry with the guy to make her fans feel secure like... 'oh Rai doesn't like foreigner, she prefer india guy'. She also try to signaling this because at that time Rai is on dating market. Thats why she can end up with Bachchan dynasty and maintain favorable with her fans. I loved Bride and Prejudice but they kind of thought they could smash two hot people together and the chemistry would follow. Not the first time filmmakers would make that mistake and won't be the last. But also Darcy is kind of xenophobic and it's really hard to pull any charm out of that.
@cmm5542
@cmm5542 Жыл бұрын
The original Darcy was classist. There's nothing more charming about that then about xenophobia. To be true to the spirit of the story, Bride and Prejudice had to have him do something just as wrong for the modern day as Darcy did for his day, and then change. Darcy is not originally a charming person at all: he directly insults Elizabeth at their first meeting, and her entire family in his proposal. He treats her like she is beneath him and should be grateful for his condescension in falling in love with her, until he realizes how very wrong he was! I love Darcy and every version I've seen of Pride and Prejudice, but he is no Prince Chaming but a man with real faults.

Adaptions that fail at core parts of Pride and Prejudice, because they're an adaption of P&P, no matter how bad the adaption it is, it's still a good story because P&P is a great story. Unleashing Mr Darcy, oh my lord, had they just removed the weird marriage stuff, would have been a fantastic modern adaption. In fact had they only hinted at it being an adaption not like they with the title, it would have been fine stand alone book. Like Bridget Jone's Diary. But no. There is no reason to have an objective to get married if it's set in the modern day with white middle-class/wealthy protagonists. Same goes with Pride and Prejudice 1940. Funny cute movie, poor adaption.
