This version was 13-year-old me's introduction to Jane Austen. As an introvert with high-functioning social anxiety, this version of Darcy is near and dear to my heart because of how freaking uncomfortable he looks at all times. At last, a movie character who looks like how I feel in social situations!!

For me was far the opposite, I really dislike how in 2005 version he is just shy, and as introverted person with social anxiety but big ego, I can say that people then to look at me in two ways only. Black and White: they either hate me because they think I don't want to talk with them because I think of myself as superior and they took that personally or they infantalized me - oh she is shy so cute - Is not a compliment but a pressure on my shoulders because I know in the moment I vocalize my ideas they would think I was just arrogant the whole time 😂 And also could be that I read p&p 1st and then watch the movie and it was far off to what I had imagine.

You were so right to say the word 'accessible' this was a gateway in to Austen and then alter the Bronte's for me. But to my surprise, my 35 year old action movie fanboy brother loved it, because it told the story well and kept him engaged by being just so pretty, musically interesting, and entertaining.

Having read the book multiple times, and having a formal English language and literature education, it would appear we're in agreement. Yes, the BBC series is incredibly faithful to the source material. As such it's a fantastic work. The 2005 movie is a wonderful deconstruction/interpretation. To use an imperfect analogy, it's the storytelling version of the spirit vs the letter of the law. It uses an exaggerated presentation at times to make-up for the omitted elements and shorter duration. But the exaggeration is used judiciously, enough to make its point without beating you over the head, or to intentionally set itself apart like screaming, "Look how daring I am!" The book may not include a smoldering dance or a rejected proposal in the rain followed by passionate staring. But those scenes delivered the same intent as the book, just in much shorter time. I think that's the key for adaptations and interpretations. Changes to the original work need to follow the original's intent, not just be an excuse for a director/producer to say, "Look how modern and clever we are."

Thank you ! I saw the 2005 first, fell in love with it, later saw 1995 series too, liked them reasonably. Then I had an English literature professor shit on how unfaithful to the book the 2005 one is, so ... basically I read the book in the original language just to be able to argue well and from an informed standpoint as to how she was wrong about it. The spirit, the soul of the characters and the growth they go through - from everything I've seen up to now, 2005 still does the best, 1995 following closely second. But they just are very different animals.

The movie was referred to by my college roommate, who ended up doing her PhD thesis on the family units in Austen, as "Emily Brontë's Pride and Prejudice". Which is a succinct and accurate way to nailing where it goes off the rails. It takes Austen's plot, but everything else is trying so hard to be Wuthering Heights, right down to moving the entire story OUT of the time period it was originally set in because the male-gaze of the director did not think the empire-waist silhouette was "sexy" enough for his movie.

The 2005 Pride and Prejudice was the first adaptation of a classic book that made my YA-obsessed 16-year-old self give classic literature a shot. I watched it no less than four times within a year of first seeing it. I know we don't need to compare and pick favourites but... like some other commenters here, Pride and Prejudice 2005 came first for me so it has a special place in my heart. The music and cinematography really do it for me! I love the 1996 miniseries, but the golden light and sweeping shots and delicate piano of the 2005 movie are just *chef's kiss* (That being said, I watched your Lizzie Bennet Diaries video earlier today and was reminded of how flawless that is. Maybe I just love Pride and Prejudice...)

"One can like two different adaptations of a thing without having a favorite" PREACH sister!! I love the book. I love both the 1995 and 2005 adaptations of it. I'm so tired of internet snobs dumping all over the 2005 version because they happened to have seen the 1995 version first and will only accept Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. They are both so good for different reasons and are both wonderful! And, I'm sorry to offend, snobs, but there are some things that the 2005 version actually did BETTER than the 1995! Shocking, I know
@Loulizabeth3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree ! I like both versions and also see that there are things that the 2005 version does better. The ages of the actors and actresses being one of them, which I admit I've always struggled with in the 1995 version. Especially with the Bennett Sisters. But I do love how in-depth the 1995 version is able to go given and how much more of the plot they're able to show. That said I also love the black and white version with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson and The Lizzie Bennett Diaries too.
@emilys14183 жыл бұрын
@@Loulizabeth Yes, that’s one of my problems too!! Elizabeth is supposed to be 20 years old, but the woman who played her in the 1995 version was 26 and looked 30. And I understand beauty standards were different back in the early 1800s but Jane was supposed to be the prettiest character and Rosamond Pike was the perfect choice to play her. Jane and Bingley are both just so ugly in the 1995 version 😬 I do love how the 1995 version got to include almost everything from the book though, especially the parts where Lizzie visits Pemberley. That was one of my favorite parts of the book and not much of it makes it in the 2005 version. I love the LBD too ❤️

This movie wasn't my first introduction to Jane Austen, but it did give me the push to consume her works, and other classics, with seriousness. I think the grime and informal (and more overtly passionate) nature is why. I had seen other period dramas, but to my young self they seemed almost stand-offish. The 2005 film ended up being a gateway drug to being able to appreciate period drama, and now as an adult I love them. Oh, and the music score in general and long shots during the balls are so good at capturing mood and multiple plot points very quickly without feeling jarring.

So I very recently saw this movie for the first time ever. I don't really care much for romance stories (I like romance in stories, just don't generally like romance focused stories, they drag on). But I really enjoyed this movie. And it wasn't so much "oh, look at the romance, it's so cute, omg" for me. There were bits of that which stood out to me and that I really liked, sure, but I didn't enjoy that stuff nearly as much as my sisters with whom I was watching it. What really stood out to me about this movie was just how phenomenally well done it was. The directing, the cinematography, the costumes, the sets, the editing, the acting- those micro-expressions! All of it was on point and I dare say practically perfect in communicating exactly what they were supposed to communicate. I was geeking out about it the whole time.

I tried to give this version another go this Christmas, since I'm one of those ardent-proponents-of-the-miniseries people. While I can relate to some of the awkwardness of the characters' interactions, it just felt SO awkward that I found it nearly unwatchable from secondhand embarrassment! Plus, some of what Lizzy did seemed so impossibly out of character (at Pemberley, spying on Darcy and Georgiana?? Rather than trying to avoid that dreaded awkward encounter!). And Lydia is...miscast, I'd say. I just don't buy that version of Wickham running off with her, however willing she might have been. I (think) I can forgive the strange costuming choices, since they were going for a ~vibe~ but gosh...Caroline Bingley's dresses are just out of a 70s harlequin romance cover. I love the overall look of the film and the gorgeous cinematography and score, but character-development-wise it fell short for me.

I honestly think this is such a great adaptation. I understand the things that people dislike, but I think it made the perfect changes to translate a story from book to movie. The way they build up tension in this film works so much more efficiently for the medium, and makes for a much more satisfactory climax than what we get in the 1995 version, in my opinion. The cinematography and blocking is exemplary in its storytelling - that one wandering shot at the Netherfield ball is perfection. It tells a complete story, and there are so many interesting components to it. And also we get the rain proposal which must be one of the best movie additions to any adaptation of any book, ever. And bonus points for the masterpiece that is the score.

Once again you make amazing points. I absolutely love the accessibility in period stories, like you said, it does so well to help modern audiences understand it without dumbing it down for them or unecessarily modernizing it, as well as the more... familyness of the bennetts. Like in the miniseries it was understood they loved each other, but it felt so much closer and kinder in this one. Also, as a film studies student, I really appreciated the cinematography of this one. Having characters narrate letters might be better for book accuracy, but it's far more engaging (in my opinion) to show a shot of the Bingleys and Darcy ride away from Netherfield and then see servants packing up the house and be able to figure that out for yourself than to see a character tell another character that they've left.

It's really interesting watching this analysis after the release of the 2020 Emma, because I feel like that film took a lot of cues from both the 1995 and the 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaptations, and found something that was really the best of both worlds. I'd love to see you cover it. (Incidentally they did have "hairspray" in Regency times! Not actually a spray of course, but they styled their hair with pomade which contained beeswax and rendered tallow. It set quite hard, and would definitely have held curls and flattened flyaways. Besides, three miles on a calm day isn't nearly a long enough walk to look like that!)

I love both versions. I actualy like 2005 a little bit more just because it looks so beautiful.

This is almost my exact thoughts on this movie. I really liked it and still do, but I like them mini series and the book all for exclusive reasons. Really good video:)

Particularly with Austin films I find myself rating them more on the things I like than dislike. The re-mastered 1995 is incredible, but I love the 2005 sound track so much. And the smoldering tension.

I really like you videos and I allways thought, you were just calmly talking to the camera. Then I saw the shadow and noticed, that you actually gesture all the time. I do not know, why I had to write this, but somehow it changes everything ...

I read Pride and Prejudice in high school and then got my mom interested in it. We rented all the versions of it we could find at the time from Hollywood Video, sadly this one was 2 years from existence. I watched this one in theaters and have since seen it more than 30 times. I will say though that the black and white version, while being shorter, even than this one, did good for the time period it was made in and is rather enjoyable as well, if not very faithful.

I love this movie. Absolutely and wholeheartedly. ❤ And it feels not as stuffy as the 95 version.

I absolutely love this movie, but that ball at the public assembly room has always struck me as the visual interpretation of body odor.

Weeeell.... in that day and age pomades and perfumes were major, but running water wasn't a thing, and neither was deodorant, so... probably a fair bit of actual BO going on there too, as well as plenty of clashing fragrances? 😋

I think of this version as Charlotte Bronte does Pride & Prejudice. 😉

The mini series is so much more immersive to me, like a slow burn romance from another world. The film takes aesthetic liberties and truncates the plot so much it all feels too fast and too modern. I just didnt feel much when i watched it. Plus colin firth is really the one and only Darcy to me
@Nanenna3 жыл бұрын
You know, I've only ever seen this version once when it first came out and I was all "eh... but he's not Collin Firth" back then. You've made me want to give it another shot and appreciate the historically accurate grime.
@laneandrew6167 Жыл бұрын
I had never thought about it that Mr. Darcy had such social anxiety, that that was why he pushed back rudely at anyone trying to talk to him at a ball. But I can see that.

For me, I relate to liking multiple adaptions of one story the exact same way I do with different translations of the Bible lol. Case in point, 2005 PaP is like the New International Version or the New Living Translation: more of a paraphrasing of the general ideas, definitely not a word-for-word. Whereas older adaptions--specifically the 1995 miniseries--are more like the English Standard Version or the King James Version: less accessible, but a truer translation of the original story. And just like movie--or Bible--adaptions, you can appreciate the differences between them, and think of each as a different angle and a different lens through which to take in a great story.
@lisaroper4212 жыл бұрын
Ha! I love it! I can definitely relate to that too. Although just like with the Bible, I like the older better 😂 I must like things unaccessible!

@@lisaroper421 I would call it a generalized loss of the love of complex, antiquated language, which only some of us still enjoy. Reading Shakespeare for fun, etc. There's such a BEAUTY to the way people used to speak.

have you ever seen the 1945 version of pride and prejudice? if not, definitely worth a watch. the costumes are the wrong era and there's a lot of weird quirks that come from the style of filmmaking in the 40s vs. now, but it's definitely worth a watch. in particular, the acting talents of greer garson and sir laurence olivier make it amazing.

I think I'm too much of a book purist to like this much, so thanks for explaining why it didn't quite jive with me! Also... Keira's Knightley's perma-pout annoys me! XD
@kiaranaria72113 жыл бұрын
Those are just her lips, though. I've watched an interview with her where she says that the director always reprimanded her when she did the pout. She said that there was only one pout that he didn't notice and ended up in the final cut. I always try to find it, but forget a few minutes in... Someday maybe

This movie was my first contact with the regency era. I was 14 and fell in love, afterwards I read the book and watched all adaptations I could find then I started to read her other books and search for their adaptations. But this movie continues to be my favorite. It is more romantic than the book, but I love it for being so. Also, Collins should have maried Mary. She would become even more annoying, but the two are sooo alike. But yes, I know Charlotte is better for him.

I agree.... it's lovely and so damn romantic. It's a guilty pleasure for me because I am an Austen reader and the back of my mind is all, "no, this is wrong," but the front of my brain (and other parts lower down) really like the film.

@kinocrone72753 жыл бұрын
Ah I'm so conflicted. All the things you praised I loved about the movie, but I can't shake that they got the tone wrong. I feel like the plot is Jane Austen, but the tone is more Charlotte Bronte. Both I love, but I don't necessarily want them mixed XD
@eowynsisterdaughter7 ай бұрын
I didn't care for the 2005 when it came out, I've become more tolerant over time though I still wouldn't consider it a favorite. Probably because I see the book as comedy before anything else, and the 2005 version heavily leaned into the romance and drama rather than witty social commentary. Our reasons may not be the same, but like you, I also thought the 2005 one missed the core tone of the book.

I love love love 2005 pride and prejudice. Bingley and Jane look perfect together from the start and Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth grow to be perfect. The family feels like a family, something not often seen in movies. It's far from perfect especially if you consider 1800s society, so many things wouldn't do. I like the mini series as well, but it's less watchable than a two hour movie you can just decide to watch on a whim.

"And everyone is noticeably less well-fed..." - yes, and it bothers me. Lizzy could be somewhat slimmer than Jane cause it's basically canon. She's more active and she's not the Bennet sister who's considered the most attractive. The fact that Jane was described, as "fuller one" - I can't tell if that was the exact word, cause I didn't read it in English - and she was the Pretty one, warmed my heart when I struggled with bodsy image issues.

I would have loved the movie if it wasn't for Keira Knightley's casting as Elizabeth. That ruined the watching experience because while watching the film, she was never Elizabeth in my eyes, but always Keira Knightley. Btw- have you ever watched "north and south"? - miniseries from 2004, based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novel by the same name. It's very good (both the book and the series)

A mess of hair was a no-no for me. Even if she walked miles in windy weather she would have tried to fix her hair a bit before going into the house. But in this movie it seemed like she didn't care at all about her presentation when visiting other people. You don't do it even nowadays, even if you are usually a messy person. They are not her friends and not her close relatives. She would have cared about her looks. For me, such a mess of her hair was a way too much when conveying how Lizzy was 'not like other girls'. The hand thing was good though. Basically, this Darcy's interpretation is the only thing that was interesting for me. This Lizzy was too wild, too scary.
