After reading a few comments here about Mick The Twig's Incompetence/Throwing his toys from the Pram behaviour about key Dendro results, I decided to do a bit of searching. They showed his "No I didn't" Clip on Day 3 as the Producers felt it was necessary for Show continuity, but, sacked him after the episode was filmed. Why? It was the first and last time ANY of the Professionals on the Show refused to give an explanation about why or why not they were able to glean information on an object. Plus, his utterly putrid behaviour/demeanor with Tony ensured he was banished from the Show.... permanently. Brilliant! I enjoy happy endings!

Exactly why it is the best archaeology show on TV. No humour in the Bone Detectives, and precious little on other shows. These guys all know what they're doing and respect each other. Of course, it's a lot easier to be cheerful on a 3 day dig than after a dreary summer of digging on projects on which your academic career depends. The guys Alice Roberts (one of the most charming hosts ever) interviews look pretty serious.

I think it was supposed to be a light call out to Mick Worthington who was not willing to participate and debate the findings of the lab and explain why he disagrees with the results and how to tackle and check and explain the nuances of dendrochronology and dendro-dating rather than keeping it to himself unlike Mick Aston who disliked the British-Romano period that happened in that plot of land he still tried to find ways to participate debate and give out his experience and expertise albeit in before AND after the Romans came to Britain. Hence why Worthington was kicked out of Time Team

What I love about the TT archeologists is that the really senior ones (Phil in this case) seek, lap up and respect the knowledge of the much younger experts (Naomi here). No, I've been doing this for xx years so I know more than you about everything. Phil knows that he is an expert in his field (the neolithic I believe) and the work and enthusiasm that he put(s) into that so admires those who do so in their own specialities. In life there are so many people who do not do this....unfortunately.

I've noticed some of the wisest experts in the sciences are particularly good at humility because being able to learn from others is exactly what leads to great knowledge. Being a specialist necessarily involves being comparatively ignorant of other topics. It also seems that those who closely guard their authority perhaps value appearances over knowledge and this fundamentally limits their opportunities to learn.

It occurs to me that one possible explanation for the non-matching timber dates for the bridge could be repairs over time. If indeed the river had battered that bridge with current, stone, and debris, it would likely to have needed to be fixed, especially it had been in existence for a long period of time. It may have collapsed and been repaired a few times before being replaced.

Wow, the bromance between Tony and Mick Worthington (Mick the dig) at 39 mins is palpable. I bet the dendrochronology team didn't get any more invites to contribute to the show on camera after this, highlighted by the jump cut at 39.56mins when the producers must have stepped in.

However in the case of the show as it clearly states in the summary at the end, they got the age sample after the filming, so the producers wanted an answer for the purpose of “good Tv”

If you are not willing to speculate or even show results you disagree with then do not agree to be paid to be on a television program that specializes in open and robust debate combined with many scientific approaches.

The way to think of the Tees Valley is as a border area. It was the northern point of the Tees-Exe line, the border between Yorkshire/Durham, Bernicia/Diera, for a short time Scotland/England as well as the heart of the Danelaw. There is no way such a key crossing wouldn't be very well defended.

Its great to see another domitian coin come from another part of the uk. My stepdad found a domitian dupondius from 95 ad in swansea. It goes to show the romans flew thru britain very quickly. They certainly meant business.

The colour wasnt too great on it untill 3 days ago when the coin went into a bath of olive oil to give it a bit of a chance and i couldn't believe it the coin is almost new👌 the image of Fortvnae on the back with a laurel wreath has literelly just started to come back. It is absolutely hard finding roman stuff ive been looking with my stepdad for 6 years 😂

The river Tees has been ignored over the years by archaeologists but it is a mouth river on North east coast and has had Saxon/ Roman / Danish Viking settlements and was obviously a much used invasion point. Much has probably lost into the sea as much of the coast has eroded but much also is probably survivable if a more concentrated exploration and mapping was made.

@Tyg Rahof it is also near to "Doggerland" in the North sea, so the artefacts could be far reaching in history from early european nomads to later invasion settlements. Some artefacts have been caught up in fishing nets in the North Sea.

@Tyg Rahof Another thing about the river Tees is that it was a very natural meandering river, so its course changed over the years. This would affect early settlements I would guess, and mean that until the meandering was controlled by the Tees Barrage being built, that artefacts may be found where the river used to meander, meaning artefacts maybe "scattered" along its old course(s), certainly from the barrage to the mouth and estuary of the river.

@John Jackson yes, but keep in mind the dogs in the USA were so much more tedious, because there just isn’t the amount of ancient human activity. Yes there are Native American sites, but so many were not permanent so you just don’t get a giant road and 2000 year old bridges. Yes, there are a few places in the USA where their are cliff and cave dwellings, but it’s not to the level of the UK.

Multiple bridges along a river that close together isn't at all unusual. When one bridge needs replacing they build the new one next to it. Traffic can use the old while the new one is being built inconveniencing nobody that needs to cross. I for one am surprised they only have 4 bridges on a 2K year old river crossing point.

Watling street runs on path of the furthest bridge on old nls surveys even have two tumulas nearby too Betty Watson hill nearby written in what looks old English 🤷 so maybe might be sight of the old fort or outpost as higher ground tends to have advantage.

Time stamps for reference: 30:27 "Have we got a result?" "No...well we do, but I'm not going to tell you." "Why?" "Because I don't believe it." 39:40 "I didn't say [my colleague] came up with a date" From one day to the next, the "result" becomes "there was no date" it was "a conversation about an interesting area to look at." Given that the sample taken by Mick Worthington had more than the minimum number of rings usually needed, and that at 45:35 Tony said that wood had been subsequently dendro-dated, it seems probable that either Worthington's samples were incorrectly measured or that his statistical tables were inadequate. When he first appeared on Time Team he wanted to be known as "Mick the Dig". Then he took up dendrochronology and Tony called him "Mick the Twig". In this episode he went from Mick the Twit to Mick the Sh*t.

Not useless at all. Please review time mark 39:40 to 40:15. There was no data with which to match those two pieces of wood. It's somewhat like languages. If the Rosetta Stone had not been found, the Egyptian hieroglyphs might still be unreadable.

This be the difference between making an entertaining TV show for the masses and the relatively few slim portion of the population who work for a Uni, public or private school, an organization for Archeology/ heritage. coming up with a dendro. date takes a great deal of time. In a tight shooting schedule with to camera onsight responses? This fellow didn't wish to ruin his career by blurting out a date for something. The difference between his profession and others on the show is quite keen. Also there is something to be said about others on the show saying "Might be" or "An interpretation is" when dating a find everything is debated and found to be wrong or right for years after the show is filmed. The dendrochronologist in this case was worried his colleagues would ridicule him for being way off. Thing is, you can do something for a TV show. Say "my best guess with a very limited amount of time to do anything like a full in depth analysis* then he really couldn't be held accountable. I think the poor man has very harsh colleagues, professors, or holds himself to too high a standard. It's TT and as such, many things are not scientifically accurate. It's a best guess for entertainment. It is! Extremely entertaining! Yet the intellectuals at Uni and institutions will not take this as written in stone.. or wood lol. It's all up to years of study and interpretation. I feel bad for this fellow..I sure the director and producer would have spoken to him beforehand. The fellow just couldn't seem to understand. Yet it is great they left it in, cause it does show what a die in the wool Uni person would say. They would not commit to the science of an exact date range without the proper data analysis. There are thousands of people that wouldn't go on TT for that very reason. This is a glimpse of that world that is very much not interested in being part of entertainment. They are pure professional scientists. ❤❤ I simply love Time Team. All aspects. Brilliant.

In regards to whether or not to give a date on the timbers, I lean more towards Mick Worthington totally being out of bounds here. Simply put, he was on a TV show. He knew the cameras were rolling. I would understand his point of view better if this was just another typical, ordinary dig that archaeologists always do. However, this is Time Team we're talking about. Tony Robinson wasn't asking Worthington to do anything out of the ordinary. That was Tony's job to get information. News flash to Worthington; many times on Time Team have archaeologists/experts been proven wrong with their theories and set dates - this included Mick Aston, Phil Harding, Stewart Ainsworth, John Gater, etc. Worthington was no exception to this. By covering his computer screen he acted like he was above criticism, and that he could never be proven wrong about his determined dates (and any other critical information he may have had). I don't know Worthington at all personally, but actions like that make him look like a narcissist/perfectionist, the kind of person no one would want to work with on any kind of archaeology themed TV show. And all this secrecy nonsense over an ancient piece of wood. Wow...

A lot of character assassination of this dendrochronologist, based on a few minutes of the show. Don’t forget, a lot of guests on the show were primarily researchers/academics/scientists, not tv personalities. Clearly his commitment was to accuracy, and wasn’t prepared to discuss data that he felt was unsound. You can tell he feels awkward and defensive about it, and you may not like it, but he’s within his right to hold back until he’s happy with the data/analysis. Insulting him is uncalled for. Lastly, I expect a lot of new/international fans of Time Team, who perhaps have discovered it on KZbin, are unaware that the show was fairly controversial in UK archaeology at the time it was on TV. There was a feeling that the ‘three day mission’ approach wasn’t in service of good archaeological practice. There is some merit to this idea, given how the show often makes definitive claims about the sites at the end of the show, which are then debunked shortly after - the analysis having been made in haste. To add further context, academics/archaeologists/historians were sometimes wary of making definitive claims in front of the camera, only to be disproved later. This could affect their credibility, reputation or careers. In summary, don’t be too hard on the guy in the show. He was clearly anxious about the situation. And certainly no need to call names or attack his character.

Don't make excuses for unprofessional behavior on-screen, which is what Worthington clearly showed here. If he had problems with the Time Team show format and didn't feel comfortable revealing any data/analysis, he should have brought it to the attention of the producer, Tim Taylor, beforehand. (Privately, off-screen) That way Tony would have been prompted not to ask for dates in the first place. Whether or not you personally agree with the "three-day mission" approach is your own business. That is the part of the point of Time Team to begin with. If you appear on-screen for filming of shows like Time Team to contribute, you abide by that show's rules. Otherwise, don't bother being on the show. Hence, that's why I said Worthington knew the cameras were rolling. He knew what he was doing on-screen, and in a roundabout way, actions like covering his computer screen can also affect his credibility, reputation or career. Also, consider the context. Again, we're talking about an ancient piece of wood used for a bridge. It's not like it was a super rare gold coin. It was unnecessary to take such a secretive stance, given the context.

Specifically, the gaslighting on day three, when he denied anything about a dendro-date from his off-site associate. Yet on day two, while hiding the screen he spoke of disagreeing with the associate's dendro=date. He's been a dendrochronologist for a good ten years at this point in the show and it's obvious he's not a stupid individual. But this aggressive backpedal from the suggestion that there was even a GUESS at a date really makes me wonder what the bigger issue was. Personality conflict? Contaminated/improperly taken/inconclusive samples? Elitism? Pride? Wood wasn't as old as thought? It just seems so out of left field to the viewer - especially since many folks were fine to say "Sorry I can't give a date, there's just not enough to go on." Instead we got this unprofessional four-year-old style "No I didn't" reaction and a missed opportunity to explain more on the challenges of dendrochronology and how science sometimes needs more time. I'm just confused, really.

This whole show is about educated people hypothesizing, then being confronted with something unexpected and wresting with how it fits into the greater picture. Mick the Twig flatly refused to engage in this process and instead chose to hide behind the barrier between the public and professional academia this show was meant to break down. And for that, Tony very rightly called him out.

"If I THINK it's correct!" What an arrogant Pillock. His poor ego won't let him admit he was wrong. The ENTIRE episode revolves around getting the Dating correct, and he obviously doesn't know what he's doing. From what I gathered, being a Field Archeologist, it's much hard work that falls directly on the individual Archeologist to interpret what they find. Soooo, he moves onto another job within the same field that involves using outside sources for info. It's perfect for him because he can pass the buck when things don't work out to his satisfaction. And, his angry "No I didn't" nonsense on Day 3, was the equivalent of throwing his work out of the pram when it doesn't work out. It's like he doesn't give a toss about EVERYONE else there who's looking to him for objective interpretation. BTW, notice how TT actually found a competent Dendro person who (Miracle of Miracles!) arrived at an accurate date with wood THEY retrieved themselves from the river!! I began binge watching ALL TT Shows and truly can't figure out why this twit was even involved from the very beginning. He's like Time Team's Sideshow Bob. He received his original moniker because he was target enthusiastic at digging holes. Good. Stay with what you (and the average 5 Year old with a sandbox) are obviously good at.

as i understand it. everyone involved agreed that what with other commitments and work. three days was about the limit to the time people could reasonably and reliably give to each dig from a filming point of view. but the pathfinder team took months to set up for each program. on some it also took months to get licenses to work. all the digs also took two or three days to close down and writing the dig report then took months more office work. you also sometimes had moths of conservation work to do on the finds. so the three days thing is a bit miss leading and was only ever to do with the filming side of the work. so yah its just kind of to do with the way the show was set up. but mostly it was to do with the fact that time team was the equivalent to a reasonably big universities field team but was being run on a part time setup. they could have done more but it would have become overwhelming. as a last point most evaluation digs are only about three days or so. so as this was the feel/format they had decided to go with to. the timing kind of seemed right.

From archaeologists I know that have been on the program it takes longer than three days. Perhaps the actual digging is sometimes just three days but all the "show" and research and such involves more than just three days.

It was always the concept of the show to do as much in 3 days as possible, initially to attract a short attention spanned Tv audience to the history and bring younger people (teenagers) closer to the action end of archeological studies. It worked.

Gosh the dendrochronologist was a tad short with everyone. Ouch. He even made me feel cold. Knowledgeable, but not flexible or meeting others half way with his approach, and very rigid as seems he took any questions by Tony as aggression and he was literally throwing his dummies out of hjs pram. Also, why was having such a huge piece of wood with rings on difficult to date. Surely carbon dating could have been tried. Seeing the little fish in the water going about their daily routine was so cute. Amazing and beautiful finds, and a complex and intriguing site. Another great TT. ❤

Not how hydrology works. Once things are on the bottom they kinda stick there in the mud, a strong flood might move small objects a little ways, but would move large objects further simply because of the amount of resistance they have, water will flow around and leave the smaller objects in place easier than a large stone block or large pieces of wood because of how much water is actually pushing against them.

I loved this episode....EXCEPT....that Mick Worthington dendrochronologist guy was way way way out of line in refusing to show Tony Robinson the data he received. I’ve been involved in television productions....this guy took the job and was being paid to show data and discuss....not hide results that the show most likely paid for in the first place. On top of that he was remarkably rude in his refusal. I hope that was the last episode he was ever allowed on...what a drama queen!

@Only Me Wrong. He absolutely IS a ‘media luvvie’ .....he is actually on a television program!!! That program was always allowing the professionals to take risks and show the entire process...that is what made the show so fascinating. Archeological work is interesting because it is a combination of the scientific method AND the nuanced knowledge of the professionals. To see the whole process made it real. He was paid to do a job....the lab work he refused to share was mostly paid for by the show and then he acts like a toddler brat to the host. I heard this ended his career with that show. If I had paid for all of that and been talked to like he talked to Tony Robinson was I would fire him before the show had wrapped. I have worked on shows with ‘scientists’.....professional is not a word I would use for that man’s behavior.

Later, Mick told him that what he was hiding behind the paper was a discussion between peers, something scientists would do if the data doesn't add up (it's called peer review). I saw nothing infantile and narcisistic in that. If Time Team had been sensationalist in nature, Mick would have given him a date that would have fit the narrative. But Time Team never was sensationalist (and that is something I greatly appreciated about TT).
