Bridge strike sends flames soaring into Glenville air

A tractor-trailer hit the Maple Avenue bridge in Glenville Thursday, injuring the driver and causing a large explosion with flames that reached as high as 200 feet in the air, officials said. The tractor-trailer was carrying some type of compressed natural gas, propane or compressed air.

WNYT article: “ The driver did not see a sign indicating a low height, investigators said. The driver, Sylvester Basil Jr., 60, of Texas, has severe burns to his hands and face. He was taken to Westchester Burn Unit.” Maybe they’ll update the bridge. Sounds like it would be good, since there have been other crashes there.

i saw the car getting towed and it looked horrific! i live right down the road i don’t understand how he didn’t see it. i think he wasn’t paying attentions because there are signs and a pull off spot

Compressed air? Burning pretty good for air... 😂. Google maps clearly shows 10ft signs on both sides of bridge. If train had explosive anything in it, this could have been catastrophic. Hope the driver recovers quickly.

There are two of these bridges (used to be three) that regularly peel a truck/trailer top off. Unfortunately a standard GPS, not a trucker's. will not show a driver that a low bridge is ahead. The state has put up several warning system for the other one but not this one. Unfortunately the owners, two different rail companies, will not fix the problem, telling the NY DOT that it's their problem. The one in the video even claimed a mirror from one of my past trucks, also being very narrow, when I got forced into the wall by an oncoming truck. I hope that the driver recovers as his hands were badly burned and his face well scorched when the compressed natural gas blew up.

Hi, if it’s a rail bridge then they normally drop the road, raising the tracks costs a lot more. Drivers fault, jail time for what he did. Huge cost and could have set fire to the train. Take care all M.
