The bit that gets me the most is the dad comforting his son which both have been very rocky to eachother, and the fact that he saw his dad as a monster and then when he finally confronts him and just holds him, god it makes me so emotional.

I had a TA/Special Ed teacher in elementary school that realized that I wasn't dumb, but unmotivated... she saw that i avoided people and was bullied by others... so she decided to motivate me by taking me out to lunch once a month if I did all my work. I had that childhood crush on her and her friendship really helped me get thru elementary school. XD this was 90s

for a lot of kids, this book was one of their first introductions to death. i remember reading it in like 6th grade, at night with a flashlight, and getting to her death having NO idea it was coming. i literally closed the book, turned off my flashlight, and laid on my back staring at the ceiling for hours. it was mindblowing how quick she was gone, how easy, and how unceremonious. i still think about it sometimes - its such an effective story.

I haven’t seen anyone say it yet, but this film is based off the book, which is based off a true life story of the author’s son whose friend died when he was young. The son then directed the film!

I thought he was one of the writers - doesn't really matter, it's a story for him so it's only fair that he should be part of it. And if he gave the changes the ok then that makes it ok

Yes I believe the mom or someone related to the kid wrote the book for her son! To help him cope with the grief since he was a child when he lost a friend 😭 Then the son as an adult helped with the movie

This movie definitely hits harder when you know people who died suddenly, especially young people. I had a family member who got murdered. I also knew a kid from school who was hit and killed while riding his bike. And a few more kids whose lives ended too soon. It's jarring beyond belief to have the world be "normal" one minute and changed forever the next.

Just so you know this book originally came out in the 70s and i think it was set in the 60s (in the book) so thats why it wasnt weird for his teacher to take him to the museum. Times were different then

They added a bit more of a fantasy element to the story in the movie. It was more hinted at in the book. But the whole point about Terabithia was that it was Jesse and Leslie's special place, the place where they were king and queen. A place that no one else knew about, and where no one else could come - teachers, parents, siblings, bullies, it was just them. And for Jesse - just landing in it made him feel like a king, like a stronger, wiser, braver version of himself. The author wrote the book for her son after his friend was struck by lightning and killed. He said she could publish it if she dedicated it to his friend as well as to him. He's one of the writers for this movie.

I agree with you so much. It hurts because it is so real. You living your live, a normal day and then you get a call. Or get Home. And it hits you like a wall. A person you love, that was a part of you life is just gone. A part of your live is just ripped out. Never seeing, never talking to the person...ever again.

Can you actually imagine that stuff? 🙃 The author of the book wrote it based on a relationship between her son and a really good friend of his. She wrote it in hopes to help not just him, but for others who have been in similar situations.
@dreamfall77

Once you assume that part of what is shown to be real is unreal, all your reasoning about what happened will lose all basis. Therefore, one should proceed from the opposite position. Jess was able to see the bubbles, but his classmates did not notice anything because they have no talent for magic. Jess thinks he's just imagining things right up until the moment he almost fell out of the tree but was caught in the air. Because imagination by itself is not capable of controlling gravity. I understand what you were waiting for, a post-credits scene that would definitely answer all your questions, but you were only shown how Jess and his sister entered Terabithia. You were not shown how they met Leslie there, nor whether they later returned from Terabithia. However, if you do not decide that Terabithia is real, then you will continue to doubt everything that happens to them there. And if you decide, then showing anything else is unnecessary. In addition, there is a moment when Jess comes to express his condolences to her parents, where before he says something strange to the music teacher, a girl who looks like Leslie walks past him while mystical music plays, but her face is not shown. Jess is still under a load of doubts and therefore does not dare to catch up with her or call out to her.

One of my classmates from HS drowned at the end of the year pool party for school. This movie hit differently after because we were both “different” in the sense that we were one of the few who were neurodivergent and had the same classes because we shared the same instructor who would sit in with us to help us do our work. It felt nice not being the only one who was different and being mocked for it. I wish we had grown closer but his death still hurt deeply. It was crazy going about the school day. Everyone was excited for summer vacation but the whole world felt like it was black and white to me. To the point where I was almost mad at the world for continuing to move on with life while his was cut so short. This movie captured grief so perfectly. The numbness and denial. I didn’t fully understand it until experiencing it myself. As sad as Leslie’s death was, it was beautiful to see that she brought so much into his life. She brought him out of his shell and helped his relationship with his dad and sister grow stronger. This movie will always have a special place in my heart

The trailers for this made it look like it was going to be a fantasy adventure, sort of like a kids version of a Lord of the Rings type of story. A lot of parents took their kids to it expecting that, and were caught off guard when they needed to have a serious talk afterwards with their upset kids about death. The film makers weren't happy with that either. The trailers were made by studio marketing and the film makers didn't know what was in them until they were released.

The reason he saw his dad as the Dark Master is because of when he and Leslie first saw that rusted vehicle. He turned so quickly; that figure-shaped tree spooked him, and at the same time, the chimes on the vehicle were ringing like a key chain. Also, when it comes to the identity of the giant troll, hints of it was placed throughout the film. Leslie telling Janis that troll story; Leslie commenting Janis about her feet; the troll saying “hi” the same way Janis does at the end of the film.

I think the issue with the dad is that he knows his son is growing up, and he doesn't know how to be a father to a boy who is starting to grow up. He can be affectionate with may belle because she's still really young, but he doesn't know how to be that way to a boy who's just entered adolescent. He knows he has to be a role model for his son and that frightens him so he's become emotionally distant and overly strict, what he thinks is what a man should be.

15:58 Her friends are now ignoring her because she confided in them about her dad hitting her - in the book they explain hat the rule they all hold sacred is that if your parents are mean or broke or stupid then you don't talk about it. So to them it was like she'd ratted out her dad, so now no one will talk to her. In any case, she told them in confidence and they told everyone and she's not ready for everyone to know. I guess they also see her as 'different' now that they know that she has troubles at home and that that's why they're ignoring her and have cast her out.

We share so much together, we create worlds of rol, characters, adventures, we meet and get really fun time, we call each other everytime we could, she was like her her imagination was so special and has a brightness in her eyes, this movie is now more than sadness to me it is personal pain that I can see her no more, never. her last words to me was "Be strong" and I get a tatto of this words. I mis her always and passes 7 Years without her. I never ever wish anyone this pain, this empty spot, unsee chat and the misfortune of the mind to fade more abd more of his face of my memory every day.

I read this book when I was in middle school and it wrecked me. Thankfully there had been two books before I got to that one that hit me emotionally way worse (Animorphs 54 and Where the Red Fern Grows) that I had read so it wasn't as bad to me. Still, the movie does a great job of hitting that emotional core - death happens, grief and loss is a part of life, and it's how we pass on our stories and imagination that lets those who come before live on.

And doesn't it mean more that Leslie approaches the story of Jesus as something interesting and beautiful even if she doesn't believe in it? I mean rather than Jessee and Maybelle believing in it (or saying that they believe in it) because it's what they were told to do and because they're frightened of being punished? Is their faith even real if it's brought on by fear or from just repeating what their parents said? Even if Leslie doesn't believe in it she's still keeping an open mind about it and is approaching it willingly

I grew up under being poor white trash now and have a good life after college, good jobs, bad jobs, breakdowns, and sickness. But with a beautiful wife in so many ways until my wife passed two years ago. That is a really sad ending. But the roller-coaster ride was worth every inch. Maybe that is the moral of this story. Enjoy the ride while you can. ❤

I blame this movie for tricking ne into believing this kind of genuine love exists. When i was a kid Leslie mesmerized me in an innocent way, i wanted a friend/soul mate like her

8:05 - 😂 why would you think she is fired? Not every school has permanent music, art, or physical education staff. They travel with their supplies.

I can’t watch any movie where the best friend dies anymore after losing my best girl nine years ago at the age of 20 to cancer. And now we’re losing her mum, too. So I watch reactions.

This is definitely my favorite movie with Anna-Sophia Robb 😊 but she is great in every single role , like in Charlie and the chocolate factory or The Way Way Back or Soul Surfer ..

I remember reading the book as a kid, then I find out they were making the movie in my country. I lived in a small comunity and there were only 3 kids that could read English at our total Te Reo emmersion school😢 anyway the other kids would ask what happens in the story before we saw the movie for fact check😂😂😂
