Seasons work differently in that world. Both summer and winter can last decades and as you can imagine, it's a bit of a big deal for the North. Only reason why Winterfell is able to survive it that it sits on a natural hot spring. They actually pump the hot water from the spring through the walls of the castle to keep it comfortable, even during the long winters.

Rewatching the first episodes it really flew over my head that a LOT of time passes between scenes. Every time we move to a different area, it is likely days/weeks/months have passed by already. That's why the Ravens appear to be almost instantaneous communication devices. I'm also glad someone finally recognizes that Ned has PTSD from the last war, a lot of people thinks is just Ned being worried about something else

I also think it's the combo of PTSD and also the realisation dawning on him that his kid is being taught to kill to defend herself, and the thought of her being in that much peril and the idea that she'll have to use her wits and skills to save herself is a bit chilling for him. It's the contrast between the playful banter of Arya and Syrio's first meeting and the clash of the swords and all the near misses he's pointing out to her. Ned's face kind of reads to me that he fears what's coming is coming for them all 😰 (none of that was meant to be hinty or spoilery!)

Khaleesi is a title which means "Khal's wife". Daenerys is her name. The picture of the kid you didn't recognise is probably Rickon, Ned and Cat's youngest child. You might want to add to the chart that Joffrey has two younger siblings, Tommen and Myrcella.

To be clear, they DO actually mean "Winter is coming" in a literal sense as well. And the winters ARE abnormally long. Not much explanation in-universe about the seasons, but it could be explained if we knew the size of their planet, distance from the sun, speed that it turns, speed it revolves around the sun, angle of it's axis, etc. But basically winter might be a couple years, few decades, or apparently even centuries, and they just aren't nearly advanced enough to predict it accurately.

But honestly as far as I'm concerned he's abandoned the books and we'll never even see Winds of Winter or Dream of Spring so I'm not even counting stuff he says in Q&A sessions as canon if it's not already written. @@jimmymcgill2772 That's a fair position to take, but it's not true to say he's abandoned the books. He's been updating us regularly for the past couple of years about where he's at with writing Winds. There was a huge update about it the middle of last year.

@@bookswithike3256 ya idk man, I don't think he's really giving anything in his "updates". Last he said was he had written like 1100 pages and still needed 4-500 more. He's a great writer and world builder, but I think his eyes got too big, he overscaled and now he's written himself into a corner and doesn't know what to do, too many threads to tie together in the end, so instead of working on finishing it he just keeps saying "yea I'm working on it..." Not even trying to be a jerk, but it's just math at this point. His age and health, he'll likely never live to finish the series before he dies at this pace. He's been saying "WoW coming soon!" since like 2010. I feel like he's pretty much checked out.

In the game of thrones world seasons last years rather than months. It is believed that the longer the summer is than the longer the winter will be. That is why Winter is so important in Westeros. Imagine being snowed in for over a year. Imagine all the food you and your family would need to survive.

Can't wait tor you guys to do the Histories and Lore for season 1. Things start to make sense when you get the back history of the world. Bran truly doesnt remember what happened. He's not lying to anyone. The actress that played Arya is right-handed but learned to sword fight left-handed because she realized how crazy the book fans were and how picky so she had the choreographer do everything over for a lefty so she would authentic. Great thinking for a then Eleven year old.

Along with Khal Drogo and Daenerys, you have met Ser Jorah Mormont, who is traveling with the Dothraki. YES it has been summer for 10+ years! In their world, seasons last a looooooong time. And long summers mean even longer winters, especially for the North. For the entire realm, it means food shortages and harder travel (impossible in the North). It’s like their entire way of life, getting through winter or preparing for winter

After watching 3 of y'all's reactions im ready to say y'all some of my favorites. Yous guys are a lot of fun. Side story for context... Jaime had long had abhard on for Ned. Not only because he feels like Ned judged him for killing the Mad King, but also because Ned killed Ser Arthur Dayne. Ser Arthur Dayne was one of Westeros' most legendary swordsmen, he fought with 2 swords at the same time. Ser Arthur was also a brother of the Kings Guard with Jaime, and one of Jaime's lifelong idols and one of his teachers. So, Jaime *really* wants a piece of Lord Eddard Stark.

if you want one of those cloaks they wear at the wall its just a nice cape with an ikea faux fur rug sewn to it. they talked about making them and how they used those as a cheap way to do it easily. but they definitely sell those cloaks too as a thing fans can buy.
