Moderator's Note: Winter is coming, indeed my Lords and Ladies of many seasons! Young Lady Sofie is such a sweet summer child and we owe it to her to protect her innocence from spoilers that will taint her experience of the story that so captivated us through those many seasons. Through her reactions, we get to relive those moments again and thus need to refrain from talking about anything beyond the current episode. She does not mind comparing these scenes with those from the books. But, she does not want to hear about future episodes or seasons or character arcs. As you have seen, she definitely is too smart for her own good, so please do not add a lot of backstories. Allow the story to unfold for her the same way that it did for us. She will easily pick up the story without too much help. Thank you for your cooperation! 😊

It took me a while to figure this out, but you might find this explanation useful: Honor counts for much in this medieval-style world. There's too much distance between places, and little possibility to verify any claims (yes, there are ravens, but no regular mail, and only lords have ravens), so great value is placed on the ability to trust someone else. Add to that that certain oaths are religious in nature, the duty taken on seen as sacred, so violating such an oath is also sacrilegious, almost blasphemy. So when someone swears a solemn oath to be a Knight of the Kingsguard, when he later breaks that oath to not only fail to protect that king but to actually kill him himself, then no matter the reason, he will have lost his credibility and honor in the eyes of many, to the extent that he will forever be known by the moniker Kingslayer. Others, more pragmatic, will choose to ignore this one time violation and choose to trust him still, or at least to make sure that self-interest will keep the kingslayer (mostly) trustworthy. Eddard Stark, of the North, is of the first sort. Honor is extremely important to the Northmen (we'll see that come up again and again), so while Ned had no problem waging war and rebelling against the previous king (Aeris Targaryen) for murdering his father, he is still horrified by the idea of Jaime Lannister, a member of the Kingsguard, helping him out by slaying that king. Robert Baratheon, however, is of the second sort. He doesn't quite trust Jaime, but retains him as a member of the Kingsguard because of his political connections, (Jaime is the queen's brother, and the Lannisters are a powerful family), and after all Jaime helped him become king by having killed the previous one. As for how Jaime sees himself, I can only paraphrase another great fantasy writer and say WAFO - watch and find out.

One important thing to keep in mind when watching Game of Thrones - Nearly every line of dialog has meaning and purpose. Sometimes it takes several seasons before something someone said comes back to play a part in the story and even the most innocent and inconsequential line can come into play later on.

That final moment with Ned staring, I always interpreted as Ned realizing in that moment, that *that* - the sounds, the clangs of metal, the death, the ptsd - it's all in her cards, and his face goes from a proud smile, to a worried frown. It is also a reinforcement of him respecting her personality, since he could simply just cancel the sword-training, and force her to focus on not-swords, but instead he accepts her new fate, with a grimly worried expression on his face, his horrible memories of war flashing through his mind.

The seasons last for years in this world. This summer was like 10 years for instance. So a long summer usually means a long winter is coming.
@painlord2k2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it is worse yet. The length of Winter and Summer are practically random. What RRM doesn't account for is where the selective pressure a similar environment would push the development of human society. It is just hinted on the account of Littlefinger telling they have food reserves for seven years of winter. Just the deposits for such quantity of food would be absurd and the technology to preserve it very advanced compared to the rest.

Sean Bean is, indeed, a very charismatic and engaging actor. Agree. The dialog in this series is so finely crafted. Smooth as satin. But filled with hints and presaging. Make a note, here: when you're done with GOT, there's an HBO series with equally remarkable dialog (crudely Shakespearean) set in a frontier boomtown in America's gold rush days. DEADWOOD. The characters are, as here, deeply 3-dimentional. Loads of action, drama, scheming - great storytelling with actual historical events and personalities woven through. No one has jumped on this yet, but i'm pretty certain you'd enjoy it. You're doing great, here - Carry on.

The point you made about the bastards' surnames is on point - high-born people have surnames (Stark, etc.), commoners have only first names, ilegitimate children of high born people have the special surnames (Snow for the North, Waters for Kingslanding and the lands around it, Stone for the Vale, etc) - and it definitely brands and excludes them because high-born people look down on them and commoners see them as privileged assholes...they don't belong anywhere... About Jaime and Ned - I think that Ned doesn't have problem with Jamie killing the King (after all he killed his father and brother and Ned was already rebelling against him), but what bothers him is the fact that Jamie killed someone he swore to protect with his life. For Ned it's a question of honor not justice ...also he worries about Robert - Jaime's already killed one King what will stop him from killing another?
@Alejojojo62 жыл бұрын
No, all have surnames. Surnames like Snow, Waters etc... are for Bastards. So everyone can tell you are a bastard with that surname. At least in the books.
@jcompton85072 жыл бұрын
@@Alejojojo6 Asnazu is right. In the books, only bastards from noble men and women have the bastard names (Snow, Sand, etc.). For example, since Gendry's mother is a common woman, he doesn't have a bastard name. He's only Gendry (though fans tend to refer to "Gendry Waters.") That said, it's not always consistent and kind of depends on if the father recognizes the bastard. Robert's first bastard (when he was a teenager in the Vale) was supported by Jon Arryn and given the last name "Stone." However, if I remember correctly her father was a common man who was prosperous and respected in the community, so Jon Arryn may have given her so much attention and support because of that? That said, Jon seemed to continue to clean up after Robert after he became King and provide for all of Robert's bastard to some extent.

One small correction - "Snow" is the name given to bastards from The North, not just from Winterfell. Each region has it's own name for bastards who were born there (so you might hear names like Flowers, Hill, Pyke, Sand, Stone, Storm...)
@bill.godwin-austen2 жыл бұрын
Correct on the regional bastard names, but there is one additional factor... it's not just any bastards, only those fathered by a nobleman, and then only to give token recognition of parentage. Bastards of commoners, and those not acknowledged by their "noble" father are nameless.
@jcompton85072 жыл бұрын
@@bill.godwin-austen Mostly correct. However, the naming is a little more fluid than that. For example, typically the bastards of noble women are also given bastard names regardless of the father. So to be given a bastard name, you must have at least one noble parent, but it can be a mother or father. (Usually both, as the noblemen don't always - or often? - recognize their bastards with common women. Typically, they only acknowledge their bastards if there is some kind of advantage [ like needing an heir; e.g. Roose needing Ramsey] or if they are particularly honorable [Ned-level honorable]. Also, most of the time, the bastards are named for where their mother is from or where they are physically born, rather than where their father is from. But even that is fluid. The "rules" aren't always followed to a tee. e.g. In the book, Gendry doesn't have a last name. Though most fans call him Waters. In contrast, Robert's first bastard (that he fathered in the Vale as a teenage ward of Jon Arryn) is named Mya Stone. Part of me wonders if she was only acknowledged and given a bastard name because Jon Arryn forced the situation. Perhaps he felt responsible since Robert sired her under Jon's watch? Jon A. ends up supporting her over the years for Robert... That said, I think I vaguely remember Ned reminiscing on how Robert doted upon Mya when she was first born??

Seasons in GoT have pretty random length. Practically, a long winter would be comparable to an ice age. The Long Night is when the WW fought against the humans and the legend says decades. @nicoleb15812 жыл бұрын
But historically, the wedding night being a rape wasn’t that far off from the reality. Women weren’t allowed to have casual contact with men outside their family. Engagements were usually determined by their male relatives. Women weren’t given any sexual education prior to the wedding night. And if you were lucky you might have met a few times under supervision… and the custom of consummation being witnessed was common. It wasn’t the recipe for a romantic consensual wedding night. Consent wasn’t even something women were afforded as far as their husbands were concerned

@@nicoleb1581 This is all true, not only historically, but sadly, even in many cultures today. My complaint is not about the historicity of the rape scene, however, but the sudden turn from a relationship where he thinks it's ok to rape her as she's crying to a happy, devoted, loving couple. While there have always been, and sadly still are, many couples that start their lives together with rape, I highly doubt those couples have a healthy, respectful relationship only a few months later. When Viserys is told to walk instead of having a horse it's an even deeper insult than it looks: the Dothraki are true horsemen - their entire way of life is horse-related, their god is a horse, they live on horses, they eat horses, everything is horses. To not be riding a horse is seen as very low in society, basically a slave, and the whole khalasar can see Viserys' shame.

Jaime killed the Mad King after Robert's victory, in his rebellion against said king, was basically already won.

The winter before this summer was probably not the one that lasted 3 or 4 years. Tyrion said that it was the winter in which he was born that lasted this long. Tyrion is in his mid-30s in Season 1. :) Ned doesn't respect Jamie because Jamie served the Mad King for years, allowing and even helping him in his tyranny, and only stabbed him in the back when there was a rebellion going on. In other words, Jamie served the Mad King 'when serving was safe', i.e. when he wouldn't be held accountable for it. :)

Viserys and Daenerys are from House Targaryen, which used to rule before the Baratheons (King Robert is their 2nd cousin btw!). Their house sigil is a three headed dragon, and they used to control dragons in the past, but the deagons died 150 years before the start of GoT. They're supposed to be special and magical (with purple and bright blue eyes in the books), so they love incest bc it keeps the blood pure. Jaime Lannister killed Aerys II Targaryen (The Mad King), who was Dany and Viserys's dad.

The Mad King burned the father and brother of Ned Stark alive, after Dany's brother Rhaegar kidnapped Ned's sister Lyanna (who was engaged to Robert). Ned, Robert, Hoster Tully (Catelyn's dad) and Jon Arryn (who raised Ned and Robert) rose up against the Targaryens, and Cersei and Jaime's father Tywin helped them in the end (he was The Hand of The King to Aerys II)

Excellent observations, especially about the well crafted dialogue and different visual aesthetics between the north and south. But beware, Westeros is a dangerous place where no one is safe.

Yes, seasons last for years. Precisely how this works agriculturally and such I'm not sure, I suspect that weather does change through the year, but the overall weather fluctuates over several years. 'Summer' being for several years of warm or moderate temperatures, 'Winter' being usually just a few years of cold weather where agriculture is impossible. It might still be possible to grow some crops in the deep south or on some other lands on other continents, but for the most part winter is a time of hunger. "Summers can last for years, winters can last a lifetime", as a blurb once read. Not that winters are very long, but without crops, food will often run out and make winter a 'lifetime' as the people starve. Winter is therefore a BIG deal for most of the continent of Westeros; but especially in the North, where frosts might happen and snow can fall even in 'summer', and winters might indeed choke the land with snowfall. Winter is especially dreaded in the North. Jaime betrayed his vows, which really upset things in a knightly honor sort of way, especially for the Kingsguard who are supposed to be on a higher level. Knights are supposed to be morally better than just 'skilled fighters'; but the differences between ideals and reality is an ongoing theme. Ned is angry because Jaime betrayed his vows, but also because if he was going to do so, why not do so when it might have saved Ned's father and brother? (and others?). Also, the moment Jaime killed the mad king was when it was most suspiciously advantageous to him (and the Lanisters). I won't explain the whole thing as it might be a spoiler, but Jaime was caught between conflicting loyalties.

In this fictional world, every season last for years. For example, they can have a 6 years long summer and then a 4 years long winter. Imagine a 4 years long winter for the farmers, it's horrible so they must stock provitions during summer. In the books Drogo didn't rape Daenerys in their wedding night, so their relationship doesn't started that way in the books. That makes more sense with the present development that you see in this episode. Every bastard has a lastname reffering the kingdom that they are born. The bastards of The North (not only Winterfell) are name Snow, the bastards of the Riverlands (were Catelyn family rules) are name Rivers, the bastards in the Westlands (the Lannister's kingdom) are name Hill and so for the other kingdoms. What Ned did with Arya, giving her a sword teacher was something horrible to do "she's a lady!!" Haha in the books is said that he hide it from everyone saying she was having actual dance lessons. That's why he hired a foreing teacher. I watched this show a couple of times but i'm really enjoying it watched again with you. Can't wait to see your reactions to the next episodes.

From what I can see you are already in season 4, so I will talk about that. The thing about Ned judging Jaime for killing the Mad King is because Jaime was sworn to protect the mad king as part of his royal guard, however he betrayed and killed the king shortly before Robert and Ned arrived to take the throne (which already was practically guaranteed, at that point in the war the Mad King had no chance of turning the tables and winning the war). According to Jaime's oaths, he should have fought to the death to protect the King, which means he would die along with the Mad King, unless the King decided to surrender. So Ned thinks that Jaime betrayed his oaths and killed the Mad King to save himself and not have to die when the Palace was taken by them (which at this point, knowing you're in season 4, you've already heard Jaime's side saying that this is not the truth, that he betrayed and killed the Mad King to protect his father and the thousands of people who lived in Kingslanding). Thats why Ned says something like "You served your king well, when serving him was safe" when talking to Jaime on that moment.

The reason why the dialogue is so good is because George R.R. Martin is a genius and the showrunners basically copy pasted his book to the script.

I will they the dialog tends to be the strongest when either quoting the books directly or when the plot is following the books. I love the look Ned gives at the end. I think he is thinking of Aryia in danger and is afraid. He is trying to be progressive and let her train but he is still deeply worried

Ned's problem is that he sees everything in black & white. Jaime was sworn to serve the king, so what he did was treason. As far as Ned is concerned, that's all there is to it. Now, as it turns out, Jaime actually had a very good reason to do what he did (*no spoilers*) and his tragedy is that he is constantly being insulted for what, from his perspective, was the best thing he ever did.

So, every lord has his own army?" It's called feudalism. Knights give loyalty to barons, barons to dukes, dukes to the king. It means that in the long run the king cannot be an absolute ruler, or his lords will move against him (as Robert Baratheon led a coalition against Aegon Targaryen, the Mad Kin). Go read up on the Thirty Year's War. Also, the Magna Carta.

Kudos on not immediately buying into Ned's old prejudice towards Jaime (like most people do). The guy might be a bit of an arrogant spoiled prick, but he definitely did the right thing slaying a tyrant

"Nothing said before the word but really counts" That's just BS. I hate it when people say that. For example, I'm searching for a dog trainer and I often put in emails, "My dog is very well behaved, but she has some specific behavioral issues I'd like to work on." That doesn't mean my dog isn't well behaved. It means she is, but she has some specific issues. "But" is a language tool that shouldn't be discarded.

One would think that Ned would like Jaime for killing the man who caused the death of his father and brother. But the way Ned sees it, Jaime is an opportunistic coward who only switched sides at the last minute to not be on the losing side, rather than for moral reasons. To make it worse, Jaime is kingsguard; sworn to defend the king and his family. Violating this oath in a world where honor is very important means that Jaime is looked down upon by most people, not just Ned.

Loving your reactions to GOT. This is why Ned is not "grateful" to Jaime: Ned is a RIDICULOUSLY (later you will understand why I emphasize this word) honorable guy. For him, honor is the most important thing. Jaime murdered Aerys, the Mad King, in the back, the least "honorable" way to kill someone. That's why he despises him, even though he has, in a way, "avenged" Ned's father and brother.
