I just wanted express a yuge amount of gratitude for this video and your company. my company's usual parts sources had no real idea of the different motor shaft diameters when we originally ordered parts. I knew the motor's vari-disk bushings weren't correct and my boss called and explained our problem. they were clueless. I watched this video multiple times to see what our issue was. knowledge gained and forwarded the video to my boss and we discussed it. I said he should call you and talk with a rep. your rep was friendly, understanding and worked with us to get us the right parts even tho a 2hp motor rotor isnt a standard sold part. our vari-disk shaft is still usable but took a beating from the broken key and shoe. i shaved a couple thou off a solid piece of keystock and drilled&tapped it to use in place of the 2piece, 2hp setup. this being my first Bridgeport rebuild with ZERO experience, overall, it came out well. our machine is up&running and running well. thank you to all of the H&W crew for passing on this knowledge.

Good video and great marketing for your company. I am going to be buying stuff from you later today. Something to consider: if you guys replace bushings often at your shop you should get a spiral reamer that is at the proper size. If you are just removing epoxy then it shouldn't take much torque and you might be able to do it with a hand drill. This should be faster than using the Dermal, but it will also be extremely repeatable and give you a good fit every time. Down side though is that you will need to rough up the surface before the epoxy.

I used our sandblaster to clean the epoxy out of the bores, I shot only from the back side to avoid hitting the cone surface. It was exceptionally satisfying.

I have to replace the bottom motor varidisc and already have the urethane glue and bushings and would like to know the outside diameter of the arbor you use for the motor shaft? Your videos on Bridgeports has been most helpful on getting mine working again.
@HWMachRepair6 жыл бұрын
Hi David. We use a gage pin the same size as the motor shaft. You don't want to use your actual motor shaft in case it is worn. A 2 HP shaft is 1.179" and a 1.5 HP is .938", also in case someone else needs it, the spindle side would be 1.377".

Thanks for the detailed how to. With this instruction and the book I have confidence I could pull off this particular repair. My question is how to know that it needs to be done? My BP has this variable speed arrangement and it works although it is probably noisier than I'd like but what of that? How noisy is too much? Maybe you could do a series of before / after videos.

Already replaced all the parts that need to be replace as well as all the bearings. As of now, assembled today and try to test. One thing ive notice when i speed up vibration were noticeable. How to reduce it? Or is it possible that the Adjustable Drive A Varidisc is not balance when rotating fast?
@HWMachRepair Жыл бұрын
The drive discs are balanced at the factory so it wont be that. Since you tool it apart it may be an alignment issue. If you loosen the bolts and then turn on the machine, retighten them while the head is running to get it into proper alignment. If you have any questions you can give us a call and we can try to walk you though it: 1-800-285-5271

Another great video Barry , why plastic bushings ? That must be how Bridgeport designed it but I wouldn't think they would use plastic ? Anyway thanks for sharing
@HWMachRepair3 жыл бұрын
Bridgeport also used a Delrin material for some of their bushings, but the ease of install pushed the plastic bushings to be the main one that they used. The plastic isn't a cheap plastic, it's more of a hardened composite plastic. As long as you are using the machine in the way it was meant to be used and take care of any issues as they arise, the plastic bushings work well. Still better than the metal on metal machines that you get from many companies. -Barry

What a material used for veri speed pully bushes?
@HWMachRepair25 күн бұрын
All modern day motor bushings are made with a plastic composite. If you have the blue/teal bushings those are made with a Delrin material.

I know this is an old video and you may not be checking the comments but great job. Two questions what type of grease do you recomend and how much do you put in?
@HWMachRepair4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, are you talking about the grease where the bull gears are? We use Mobilux EP-1 and re recommend about 1-1/2 tubes for a variable speed and 1 tube for a step pulley . If you have any questions you can give us a call at 1-800-285-5271 and someone can help you with any other questions you have.

In your video, you show that the bearing housing on the spindle varidisc has already been removed. Can the bushing be replaced without removing the bearing housing? I'm sure we can pry the bearing housing off, but we do not have a press to put it back on.
@HWMachRepair9 жыл бұрын
PanamaSticks Sorry for the late reply on this, Yes, you can replace the bushings and leave the bearing housing on. The only possible trouble spot you may run into is removing the old key and any glue residue from the hole.

H&W Machine Repair and Rebuilding Thanks. I ordered a bushing kit. Now all I need is time to install it!
@PanamaSticks9 жыл бұрын
I just noticed something... At 16:11 into your video, you show a closeup of the key inserted into the motor varidisc. That is not how the old key came out of my machine. On my machine the plastic faced into the bore. Since the varidisc is supposed to slide up and down on the motor shaft, I think it makes sense, doesn't it? You don't want steel gliding against steel with no lubrication.
@HWMachRepair9 жыл бұрын
PanamaSticks The way that we showed it is the correct way to install the key. Once everything is put together with the new bushings, that metal part will not actually be touching any other metal. The only part of the key that will be touching is the sides of the key which are plastic. The metal part is just holding that plastic part on. If you have any other questions feel free to call and Barry, our owner and main head rebuilder, would be more than happy to explain it better than I can through a KZbin comment.

@PanamaSticks9 жыл бұрын
H&W Machine Repair and Rebuilding I mean no disrespect, but our machine was assembled the opposite way at the factory. This is the first time it has been taken apart since.. The way you install the key, it appears that metal will run on metal as the varidisk moves up and down the shaft.
@PanamaSticks9 жыл бұрын
PanamaSticks I apologize. Here I am the student, and you are the teacher, and I just told you you are not doing something right. My bad. I will do it the way you suggest, even if it is not the way it was installed when it came out of the machine. It's your kit, and you must install a lot of these. So I will have to trust you.
@HWMachRepair9 жыл бұрын
PanamaSticks No apologies necessary. Just to double check ourselves we called one of our contacts that worked at Bridgeport when they were still made in the USA and he said that when he was making them they installed them the way that we showed in the video. It's very possible that they are now installing them like that in the factory. We have really only had to rebuild a handful of newer HJ heads and haven't run into that yet.
