Bridgeport Mill Variable Speed Drive (2J) Disassembly Part 1 / Belt replacement.
This video covers the teardown of the major components of a Bridgeport Variable Speed (2J) drive head. It also covers disassembly to the point of belt replacement. Repair of the separate units of the drive are covered in our other videos in this repair series.
This is the procedure to dis-assemble the drive assembly on a Bridgeport variable speed head - 2J. This process can be followed to replace the drive or timing belt,or for further repair of the unit.

Thank you so much for the great video - I had a main belt break in the middle of a job and really didn't have time to waste. Got the parts over night delivered, disassembled, and reassembled in nothing flat. Would not have gotten it done without your help. Thanks again

Suggestion for easily removing the motor. Cut the belt off with a Stanley knife before removing the motor. After removing the front speed adjuster, you can easily access the belt. The belt can be cut with a Stanley knife. The cut belt can be grabbed with pliers and removed through the front speed adjuster opening.

I was in the middle of a job when there was an almighty bang and a momentary flapping sound and everything stopped spinning. The spindle turns over by hand quite freely in high range but not at all in low range, so it would appear the variable drive belt has broken. I bought the machine new in 1980 and have had no trouble with it until now. Do you think the broken belt will add to my problems in getting it apart? This video has shown me how to take the various modules off the machine to carry outthe repair necessary, unfortunately I will not have the luxury of working at bench height. Thanks for the demonstration.

Thank you for the videos. I have a quick question, the factory adjustment you mention around 16:00 minute mark, how do I go about doing that? I have everything put back together but need to do that adjustment. Thanks again!

SnakePL - I sort of said that tongue in cheek. While they reference it as a "factory adjustment" and I am sure there is a procedure somewhere, it is not that involved,or sophisticated... As I am sure you noticed there is quite a bit of "slop" between the two housings and their alignment when those bolts are loose. This affects the mating of the spindle shaft into the drive splines on the back gear. Your goal is to have them centered. The best way to adjust it is to leave the bolts loose - maybe a half turn, just so the top housing can move around, and then turn the machine on. Things will tend to self center themselves, you might wiggle it a little bit by hand. You are searching for the least noise, including moving the quill up and down, and the smoothest up and down motion of the quill. One you think you have found the sweet spot, tighten the bolts down a little at a time in sequence with the machine still running. That should be all you need.Long before they would be misaligned to cause any harm, you would notice a bit of a bind when moving the quill. Indeed this is something to try if the quill is binding in a bit, or if noise comes and goes when moving the quill handle.

Most of the problems I have seen over the years repairing V drive heads is the Sheave Bushings, Belts, and Spline hubs, some guys use them and crank the speed dial below 500 RPM (in high range)and seems to me the belts crap out soon after . the spline hubs fail from pulling too much load on the head (using very large Diameter and large Taps ) or not shifting from low to high correctly

I watched a video of H&W Machine Repair and Barry said take the pins out and don't put them back. I don't understand his thinking. Looks like they are in there for a reason. What is your opinion please?
