Portia Featherington isn't kind by any means and forging the letter is awful, but her pointing out to Marina that she may end up poor and on the streets is trying to give her a reality check. Marrying is her only way of finding security. She's being harsh, but she does have a point when it comes to that.

True. And she isn't talking shit about the people themselves, just how hard the life they lead is, and how few opportunities they have (particularly the children)
@shadowphoenix15143 сағат бұрын
not to mention how the situation - should it come out - would reflect badly on her family and thus the future marriage prospects of her daughters. Marina isn't taking into consideration how it'd essentially ruin the reputation of the whole house - not just her.

The little tags that they have on their wrist are dance cards. Gentlemen could write their name on the card for a certain dance slot and it was basically a promise for a dance later in the night while they socialized with other people.

To explain the “countryside” references: During that era, the upper classes with landed wealth/titles would split their year up between their smaller city dwellings and their inherited countryside estates. They’d spend much of the fall/winter months in their country estates and then when the weather got nice, they’d head to the city for the “social season” with the “marriage mart.” It enabled all the spread out wealthy people an opportunity to rub elbows, meet potential spouses, and throw large balls with fellow elites. Obviously, they were allowed to jump back and forth between homes but much of the staff would travel with them. Families that had countryside homes but weren’t wealthy enough to also have a city home (or just didn’t prefer to spend a lot of time there) would send their marriage-eligible children to stay with friends or relatives in the city so that they could take advantage of the social season. Kind of like Marina. I also like this era, though we’re still a few decades out from the Victorian era in the Georgian era. This was around the time of Jane Austen and you can really feel the influence in the writing of this show. What a woman ahead of her time.

Great reaction so far. FYI, this is not the VICTORIAN ERA. The Victorian Era was named for Queen Victoria. Her rein was later, 1837-1901. She served after Queen Charlotte's husband passed away in 1837. Bridgeton and the spin-off show Queen Charlotte are set in the REGENCY ERA . QUEEN Charlotte's son,George IV is in charge during Bridgerton. This time period is called the REGENCY ERA because her son had rule as Regent. His father, King George III was mentally unable to rule. RE SNUFF, it was very commonly used for decades. I'm o70, ld enough to remember my great-grandmother who was born in the 1890s and grew up on a tobacco farm in Middle Tennessee. She used snuff, didn't trust MDs, and made her own medicines from an herb garden. By the way she lived to be 93. If youI didn't want to smoke but wanted to pick me up of a cigarette, you either used snuff or chewed tobacco. Of course years later we learned the danger of tobacco products.

Lady Featherington comes off as more of a villain than she actually is because of our modern sensibilities. But she was a woman of her time, and at that time, love matches were the (rare) exception. Marriage was about status and security, and she sees Marina throwing away the rest of her life (and her child's life) for a dream of such a love match. Though we don't yet know the details of how Sir George really feels, it's not unreasonable to assume that his complete lack of communication meant he was going to ditch Marina (or already had). Plus, since they didn't send Marina away immediately on learning she was pregnant (because of Lord Featherington), her entire family is now implicated, too. If it comes out that she's pregnant and she's not yet married, it won't just ruin her life, but that of all three of her cousins. They will become social outcasts and unmarriable as well. Plus her own family back in the country, and any unmarried sisters she might have there. She could literally ruin multiple people's lives (5 *_at minimum)_* while she holds out for love and insists that Lady Featherington simply doesn't understand (like the teenager she is). There's 1000x more riding on this than on a modern unwanted pregnancy.

oh god we finally got passed that cringy ass scene, now I can relax. And yes, Simon "teaching" Daphne that was awkward for the girls to watch too lol. Don't be so hard on Lady Featherington, she means well, she just doesn't have the movey or status of the Bridgertons to worry about love marriges. Also, I see you Igli with the button-downs. Add a coat and a hat to that and off to the ball

Do Igli & Blake have unresolved beef or are they naturally like this to each other?😬 (For those of us new to this channel for Bridgerton) I’m cackling at their reaction to Daphne’s not very spicy scene. I can only imagine what they thought of upcoming eps & seasons(including QC). Did they close their eyes?🙃. I’m sure they know by now that the show is based on a spicy book series.
