Luke Newton KILLED it with that Whistledown reveal scene! I saw an interview with him where he mentioned it- he wasn't originally supposed to cry. But it was just such an emotional scene, the tears came of their own accord. The director loved it and asked if he could do it again, and Luke said he honestly didn't think he could do it *without* crying... As far as Colin's entrapment line, he was totally out of line, obviously. But I think it's helpful to remember that he's had that happen to him before. Even though it is different, there are some definite parallels between this and the situation with Marina in season 1- his fiance keeping a really huge secret from him, the kind he really should have been told in order to know what he was choosing and committing to, being made to feel like a naive fool for not realizing it, and wondering how well he even knows her if she's been keeping such a big secret from him. I can understand why, to him, it might feel like the same thing happening all over again, only it hurts more this time, because his feelings for Pen are so much deeper. He's totally wrong, obviously, and I'm sure he would realize how unfair it was with a little thought. But I can see why he might genuinely feel that way in the moment. We need to give him as much grace in dealing with his pain now as we gave Penelope at the beginning of the season, dealing with his hurtful comment from season 2 (when she also made unfair and untrue accusations about him in the midst of her pain). I also get his humiliation about the writing. The reason he gave for wanting to edit his book on his own was because he wanted to prove himself to her, to be worthy of her. He sees her as out of his league, and when she praised his writing he thought that maybe that's what he could bring to the table, in order to deserve her. So now that he knows what an amazing, renowned writer she is, that hope is dashed, and he feels like she must have just been humoring him, or maybe even laughing at him. Again, Penelope has firsthand experience of jumping right to the most hurtful conclusion when she's in pain. His ego is bruised, but I think most people assume it was a generic inflated male ego that could stand to be taken down a peg or two. When the reality is, he has really low self-worth, and his ego has been under assault the entire time we've known him. And just when it seemed like things were going right (the woman of his dreams being in love with him too, and starting to think maybe his writing might be good enough to publish), suddenly both feel like they're on very shaky ground. So I get his insecurity.

😊 something I love about this episode is that Penelope's voice has never been deeper. There is such a dramatic progression and how Nicola chooses to use tone across the seasons and I just love the full like..just actualization of Penelope

His “ entrapment “ comment was a straight up trauma response from Marina. He thought the woman he loved wanted him, but she was just using him. Was Pen doing the same? “ Yellow” was PERFECTION. Colin’s reaction to first seeing Pen in her dress was THE definition of “ his heart skipped a beat.” You can almost hear him gasp and he can’t stop fidgeting. Luke… so well done!

The entrapment was definitely just anger and the definition of hurt people, hurt people. But he couldn’t do it for long because his love for her was more powerful than the anger.
