I know it was for the ad, but women in the regency era did NOT wear corsets but rather short stays, which are very similar to today’s bra. Also, corsets were not uncomfortable or seriously restricting. They were made to fit perfectly and support the large amount of fabric, preventing back pain. Tight lacing was a looked down upon practice and almost nobody wore the corset tighter than necessary

Thank you! Came here to comment this. So much of our current understanding of corsetry comes from a patriarchal pov/misunderstanding about their actual use and fit. Funny this video came out as soon as I'm reading through the entire Bridgerton series. I'm on book 8 now, so I'm almost done. The books aren't any high quality literature, but they're fun, quick and entertaining reads. So far, my favorite books are #3 (Benedict's story which is a Cinderella story), #5 (Eloise's book and has a mixed reception, but I liked it) and #6 (Francesa's story and probably the best one). The funny thing is, in each book, the sex scenes start 60% of the way through and I always think "Oh boy, here we go again". I like how the show adds more drama, layers and showing different perspectives between the families. I hope they get to adapt all of the books, especially Benedict and Francesca's books and don't change too much because I loved those two!
@mislenemislene85887 ай бұрын
Am I on the only one who loved Francesca’s book only for Michael ? Francesca is my least favorite female Bridgerton siblings , I can’t explain why 😅
@ladyangelsongbird7 ай бұрын
@@mislenemislene8588 it's okay! Everyone will have their own thoughts on the books. Francesa is definitely a different heroine from many of the others in the series and there were some moments where she was indecisive about Michael after John's death, while I was saying "Just marry him already!" But Michael is absolutely one of, if not the best heroes overall! I'm excited to see if and how show will get to adapting Francesca and Michael's story, as ShondaLand takes some creative liberties with the plots, as seen with the first two books. I just feel bad for people who stopped after "The Duke and I" and "The Viscount Who Loved Me" because they aren't the strongest books in the series and they 100% improve!
@navyakr5805 ай бұрын
Ironically enough those are the two books the new showrunner is planning on changing the most
@ladyangelsongbird5 ай бұрын
@@navyakr580 yes, that is true. I'm disappointed about the changes to Francesca's story because hers was my favorite and more mature than the rest of them. I love how it tackled grief, infertility, imposter syndrome and moving on from the past. I loved how her and John's relationship progressed throughout season 3, but the smack in the face right at the end got to me. They're ironically changing the one story where the gender of the characters changes the most and the book that most people can agree is one of the best in the series.
@FifthAveAtFiveАй бұрын
@@ladyangelsongbird I don’t think it will actually change much of Frannie’s story. Historically titles could be passed to a female heir in Scotland, which is where Kilmartin is located. The issues of fertility/struggling to conceive can still be explored during her marriage with John as they are in the book. All the other seasons so far have ignored their respective books second epilogues so that’s not a concern. Especially since at the end of WHWW, Francesca arrives at a state of peace regarding her fertility because she realizes she doesn’t need to have a child to feel complete or like a woman and instead defines what being a woman means for herself. I think that open mindedness that having or not having a child doesn’t impact the validity of their relationship is so beautiful because both Frannie and Michael say they only need each other. Tbh, by making it a sapphic adaptation there are more layers that can be explored on top of the themes of grief, fertility, sense of replacing a loved one/guilt, redefining womanhood, sexual exploration, and second love. Like imagine Michaela not only inheriting her beloved cousin’s, who was like a brother, title and feeling like it shouldn’t be hers, that John should be alive, cause she wasn’t raised to inherit so she feels out of place in that sense but also feeling out of place because she’s a woman. There is so much more they can do while still sticking to the key points of the book so in addition to seeing myself a BIPOC person that is attracted to woman being represented, I’m excited for the new possibilities it could go.

This is my favourite book of the series and it was so much fun to listen to you summarise it! So dramatic for real XD totally agree that Colin got angry a bit too often for how he'd been painted before but they still make a very amazing team. Ngl, the way Penelope especially got shown in the show so far has ruined her for me some because she's SO different from the person in the book. So I enjoyed your video all the more because it reminded me of so many fun moments ^^ also, your dress is amazing! Ps. Penelope faceplanting the pavement at the proposal still has me in stitches aksdjbakjsdbas Pps. What I definitely do prefer in the books is how much time went by till they get together. 28 makes a difference and by then, they have had so many years to get to know each other but also for Penelope to kind of accept the unrequited feelings? Yes she likes Colin and she deals with it herself and never complains to him about it. It's also why they hit so well, because it comes as SUCH a surprise, something she'd never accounted for (without blaming Colin because feelings are feelings) but it DOES happen after all the pining *_*

And when Hyacinth, Penelope, Eloise and Violet were arriving at Daphne's ball, I was obsessed with the writing, the suspense, Penelope being VERY nervous and how thoughtful Colin was when he sent letters to everyone in his family to keep Penelope company. I literally felt like I was Penelope for a second, it was so good that I bumped the rating to 4 stars.

While I don’t like how Colin expresses his anger in the book (so glad Luke N showed more complexity in that Colin was hurt and afraid) I do recognize that it’s because Colin has never felt any strong emotions until Penelope. He is consumed by his worry for her safety, wellbeing, and reputation. I do wish we’d see him apologize to Pen for his anger outbursts where he physically takes it out on her (hate the forced champagne drinking scene) since he already acknowledges internally that he is doing something wrong.

Is it just me thinking that the every last clip in the trailer is the end of the last episode of the last clips of s3 part one? 🤔 I think the picture with Lord Debling puts his hand on Penelope waste is because they see Colin puch someone. The last picture of Dubling with Penelope I think the reason why she turned her hand is to make sure everyone is watching special Colin.

Just want to point out: ACTUAL regency England did not have corsets, but stays, which are different. Stays are softer, not really boned, and a much less restrictive garment than corsets. There was no reason to have a waist cinching garment with regency dresses because the waist line of regency dresses was right under the bust aka an empire waist. Also, much of our pop culture perceptions of corsets are wrong due to bad science and mysogyny. Corsets were not the uncomfortable garment we imagine because they were fitted to the proportions of the body and usually not tight-laced (like in movies). Working class women wore corsets every day, and women wore corsets while doing athletics. For more on this, I recommend checking out Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska's MANY videos on the subject. I get it, Bridgerton is historical fantasy, so who cares about the historical accuracy of the clothes. I love the show too, and I have read all the books multiple times. But we need to stop spreading corset myths because it's ahistorical and learning the truth should be fun and something people care about. Anyway, rant over.
