The DLC levels for Xbox and PC originally took place prior to the Chinese Embassy level. They were just repurposed and slightly rewritten to take place after the main campaign so Phillip Masse’s plot line was resolved. You even see reference to this as guards in the Abbatoir mission make reference to “American super spy stories coming out of Kola.” So I think the main campaign should put the DLC levels back to their original positions and complete the original full plotline.
@LorenHelgeson2 жыл бұрын
@@gameragodzilla I remember shortly after the game came out back in the day, there was a lot of buzz in gaming magazines about something called "Kola Cell" and people were stoked to hear that it was finally coming out. OXM even came with a demo disc one month that had the whole level on it. This was just before XBox Live really took off. Man, the days when a single DLC map got people so excited. Then the two Vselka submarine levels were mentioned shortly thereafter. Rainbow Six 3 on the XBox also came with a bonus disc that had all three maps.
@lionocyborg6030 Жыл бұрын
@@gameragodzilla This is reflected in the GBA version: after Caspian Oil Refinery & CIA, you go to the Vselka submarine & shipyard (all 1 level now) and then the PS2 Nuclear Power Plant level before the abattoir. Chinese Embassy (both times) is missing from that version though and Abbatoir pulls double duty as the presidential palace level: you go back to it to do the original presidential palace objectives like find the ark and snipe Nikoladze.

Remember Ubisoft - at best, Splinter Cell isn’t an action adventure series. It’s a stealth series. It’s grounded, realistic and rewards stealth over action wherever possible. At best, Sam was never there. There’s a reason the first 3 games and especially Chaos Theory hold up so much. This remake has to stay true to that classic formula. The first three (maybe four) games felt grounded, like they could actually happen in the real world. These realistic tense political situations. Blacklist barely felt like Splinter Cell at all. Ubisoft has to remember what made Splinter Cell great in the first place. They’ve made the later games more action-focused to appeal to a wider audience, but in doing so, they’ve ironically made it about generic action, and lost what’s made Splinter Cell a genre-defining stealth series. “Like a sliver of glass, a Splinter Cell is small, sharp and invisible.”

I hate Blacklist. One thing that was great about the first Trilogy (maybe even DA) was how slow and deliberate Sam was, being a sinewy 45 year old SEAL. You got the feeling his power came from patience and old man martial arts grace. Not only was the action adventure jarring, but seeing him look and act 30 years old and doing Uncharted climbing like a Xenomorph as what should be a 60 year old with knees worn to dust is essentially a different character altogether.
@E2dEyeTheta Жыл бұрын
@@junioraltamontent.7582 Exactly! You and the OP nailed it. You could almost remove the "Splinter Cell" title from 'Blacklist' (and the iconic goggles) and you'd think it was just another stealth game inspired by SC. You didn't even need to hide bodies and you could literally just run right past guards and be just fine. Even if you were seen, you could just shoot like 10 enemies and live. You'd NEVER get away with that in the og trilogy lol. That game was borderline arcade in style.

i just hope Ubisoft doesn't fumble this. They need to take the game mechanics and feel of Chaos Theory, the linear yet multi-branched map design (think maintenance shaft on kokubo sosho), and polish and sharpen the noise and light system to a razor's edge with incredible looking lighting and near-perfect acoustics for the environments if they want a decent chance at recapturing "Stealth Action Redefined". I'm not at all against remakes or reboots, but thoses have to be purposeful. They have to be not a finality, but a step toward new entries in the franchise. If done right, a remake/reboot have a lot of positives. On the consumer side, they can highlight new perspectives and refresh an old game fans have grown with. They can appeal to new audiences, from the fame of the original game, to the fact it can be a good starting point to a franchise without having to play all prior games. From a developement point, it is a blueprint to what the first team was trying to achieve and the core characteristics of the franchise. Also, it means the new developement team will be familiar with the game concepts, story, mechanics, and so on for the production of a follow up. But as I said, it have to be a foundation to build on, to expand the franchise and to make it fresh again. Not a quick cash grab without any further plans. Even with the mess Ubisoft is today, I have hope for every new game they release, and it break my heart to see them goind deep in the wrong direction every time. I still cherish a lot of their past games, and I want to feel that again, even for one last time

I'd be excited if the original devs returned to remake their game. That's how we got the excellent and arguably best game remake ever, RE1 Remake 2002. When new devs remake a classic, they often don't do as great of a job. Cough, RE3 Remake 2020, cough. Heck, this applies to remasters as well. Just look at Command and Conquer Remaster Collection that was done by devs who used to work at Westwood Studios compared to what Take2/Rockstar did with the GTA Definitive Edition Trilogy. Yikes.

On a side note, Michael Ironside is Sam Fisher to me. I understand if they want to move away from that, but make a new character if you have to. Dont get another voice actor and try and pass him off as Sam. Personally I think Michael Ironside still has plenty of life left in him. He is a voice actor, not a stuntman. Look what Halo is doing. Crouch is B, hold B briefly near a crawl space enters it. dpad down is view deployed camera, hold down briefly near a door uses snake cam.) -no action menu of the old games -returning mechanics like rappelling etc -options for more realistic mechanics like magazine swapping instead of full reloading etc

Modern Ubisoft design just doesn't fit Splinter Cell at all so I'm surprised this is happening. If they stray too far from something like Blacklist, it'll be awful. Open-world with enemy camps doesn't work with Splinter Cell. I hope it'll be, at most, like Dishonored 2 in which levels were a lot larger than the first with more ways to approach it. Maybe tools that allow different access points while disallowing others would be cool to unlock. Like a grapple hook, wirecutters, Payday 2-like intel that enables certain actions, etc.

The ability to go prone, I love doing this in games that allow this, it gives more stealth opportunities. 3. A small “open-world”, like you said, a linear layout but with lots of options to approach it, giving it replay value. 4. All cutscenes are ingame, like you said, always staying in control of Sam. 5. After beating the game, giving new options like new missions on new maps that weren’t in the original. Last one: I don’t really need a competitive mode or even a cooperative mode, just Sam alone on a mission. Obviously no NFT, no microtransactions etc. Dlc that brings new maps I would pay for though.

I think there's a balance to be struck between how Blacklist did story and how the original did story. Like you said, Blacklist was a bit heavy-handed in terms of cinematics, but I don't personally agree with the anti-linear sentiment. Giving the player choice is all well and good, but if it really isn't a choice at all, it isn't good. That's the complication with combining choice with story. In the example you used as a visual (when Sam is using the gadget to hear the elevator conversation), the mission fails if you don't listen to the dialogue. One could argue that you really DON'T have a choice in that instance. The reason the devs gave you no choice is because then the player would not hear pertinent story information. I believe that the way it was done in Blacklist, while not ideal, is at least transparent. It's obvious that you have no choice in this moment and they don't try to mince words by pretending you do. One could argue that it's better to throw players into cutscenes because there's an established understanding between the audience and developers that "this is a moment where you have no control." In the context of Splinter Cell: Choice is good, but not at the expense of the narrative. That's been their philosophy from the first game to Blacklist. Lambert always dies, the people you spare/kill in Blacklist are ultimately meaningless to the story, etc. As per your statements about forcing the player into action sequences... I'm surprised to say that I also don't agree. I agree that you should accommodate the Ghost playstyle, but that isn't the ONLY playstyle (in fact, it's quite the dedicated and hardcore minority). That moment in the presidential palace when the lights go out is such an iconic and identifiable moment in the franchise. Franchise-defining moments like those would be completely lost if we only focused on the ghost playstyle. As vocal as the dedicated ghost-playthrough fanbase is, the tagline has always been "stealth action redefined." Stealth AND action. This could mean them working together in tandem, or them being mutually exclusive of one another. Regardless, the balance should not be tipped one way or the other. With newer technology, I think they'll be better able to accommodate both types of players because both types exist and one is not more valid than the other. Sorry, a bit of a rant there, but I'm personally tired of this community telling each other what Splinter Cell is supposed to be. People need to take a step back like the developers and read the original tagline.

Considering how well Blacklist managed to merge Conviction's faster pace head shot bananza with early SC's more open map design and methodical stealth mechanics, I'd honestly be perfectly happy if they just remade the original Splinter Cell in the modern style in line with Blacklist. The gun play and cover mechanics were overall well made, meaning the more action oriented moments weren't frustrating as the mechanics were designed to be perfectly functional in an action context, the movement mechanics were really great, the stealth, again, while not as deep as Chaos Theory or even the original, were still well done, the map design, while still being linear, was well thought out and based around the movement mechanics, allowing for a surprising amount of options in avoiding or flanking enemies, and, as I discovered in my numerous replays of the game, there was actually a surprising number of different routes you could take to get to your objective, from kicking in the front door and blasting your way through to scaling cliffsides, cutting open the backs of tents to sneak through, climbing pipes and crawling through vents. As a personal hope, I want them to bring back all the difficulty options Blacklist had. I want to be able to replay level after level in baby cakes easy mode where I can feel like John Wick, popping skulls and effortlessly tearing through enemies in a dance of knives and gunfire, all the way to ball bustingly difficult enemies with 360° vision cones like they all have a byakugan, your bullets are dart guns outside of a perfectly placed head shot and you go down faster than a mayfly in heat. Also, I'd actually prefer them to include some kind of multi-player mode like Spies vs. Mercs and have them pump that mode full of micro transactions, rather than ruin the single player with it.

A part of me is excited for the Splinter Cell Remake, but I also don't feel that excited with Ubisoft's current track record; open world games filled with boring missions that have been copy and pasted into every title they develop with only small changes to the objectives/purpose...and the tons of MTXs, simple rpg elements, gear scoring, looting etc. What I want for SC remake lines up with the requests in this video 100%. They have a whole trilogy of games to look at and see what made them great, but also look at where they failed and could flush out those ideas by either turning them into something that works or get rid of them entirely. Chaos Theory is probably the best example to get their inspirations when developing the remake. Lighting, mechanics, missions/mission structure, level design giving the player more wiggle room to try out different approaches. Hell, they could take some inspiration from other stealth action games out there like Hitman or even Sniper Elite; missions set in small determined sandboxes that allow you to tackle multiple objectives with different tactics and still complete the mission. Of course, this idea may not work with the more dedicated fanbase who really enjoy how the original trilogy played. In the meantime, they could port over some of the games to modern hardware to generate some hype and bring in newcomers across all platforms. I'd be cool with them remastering the later titles like Conviction and Blacklist, get them to an enjoyable state, and use it as some influx of cash for the remake; idk just an idea to try and get this game to somewhat meet the grand expectations we all have for the remake. Splinter Cell has been dormant for a really long time, and right now is the perfect time to make a comeback.

I agree with everything you said 100% and would just add that Ubisoft have the perfect way to move the franchise forward in Sarah Fisher, who, in the last two Splinter Cell novels, has now joined her father as a Fourth Echelon operative. Not only is Sarah in her thirties, which would naturally call for a younger actor to do the voicing and motion capture, but it would totally check the "Made for modern audiences" box by having a woman in the role of the protagonist. Best of all, they could bring back all the characters from the older games (minus Lambert, of course) in a supporting role (which would take a lot of pressure off of Michael Ironside if his health is still a concern), bridging the gap between the old generation of Splinter Cell characters (and fans) and the new generation while allowing for a new character's story to unfold. I just don't think current-era Ubisoft has the guts to do that, but it's nice to have a dream either way.

Nobody is buying a full Splinter Cell game where the protagonist is a Woman, it would feel like a different franchise.

Bring back the lethal/nonlethal choice, same as in Blacklist. The knife, the SWAT turn and the wall split jump. Do not overdo it on stealth, allow some room for decent firefight if push comes to shove. Mimimi failed after 3 games because of overusing stealth, allowing no room for errors. There's a chance that something will go wrong, here and there, so there must be some flexibility. Commandos was very strict also, no room for mistakes and that's why Commandos 2 is a masterpiece. Allowed for a more relaxed gameplay. After all, in stealth, you are the predator. You must take time to see what lies ahead and how best to tackle it. Lastly, if a remake will be made, make it all 4 first games. Conviction and Blacklist are fine as they are.

If they're going to "remake" the og Splinter Cell, I would hope they remake 'Pandora Tomorrow' and 'Chaos Theory'. With that said, I would hope they make the remake similar in style to 'Chaos Theory' and not like 'Blacklist' which felt a bit cartoony and 'arcade-like' in comparison. It would be cool if 'Pandora Tomorrow' keeps the jungle theme but focused (at least partially) on Cartels in South America rather than some terrorist group in Indonesia (for anyone who wants a 'Splinter Cell' movie, watch the 2015 movie 'Sicario'- particularly the final 30 minutes or so). I've been thinking about this remake quite a bit and two levels that I think would be cool would be The Pentagon (for og Splinter Cell) and ADX Florence (for 'Pandora' remake assuming Cartel storyline) as both are two of the most secure places on Earth. It would also be cool if they made a 'highest' difficulty which could only be played in first person- I actually thought about this in 2013 with 'Blacklist' as it would make the game more challenging as you wouldn't be able to look around in 3rd person (but this would have to be done right). Finally, if they can't retain Michael Ironside, another person who has that 'voice' is Kiefer Sutherland- anyone who has seen the movie 'Phone Booth' knows what I'm talking about....just some thoughts of mine :)

I'm going to wait for your review of it since I trust your judgement on this series more than anyone else on this platform before I consider even buying it. You got me into the franchise because of your reviews and since you are way more knowledgeable in this franchises in's and out's than myself I really trust that you will know if it's worth getting or not. Yeah I can always take the dive and blindly buy the game to "Form my own opinion" and likely have major buyers remorse while financially supporting the publisher that likely didn't deserve it just so they can keep doing things like Aggressive Microtransactions, EXP Throttling, Loot Creates, Live Service Games, Intrusive DRM, Releasing Unfinished and Broken Games, Copy/Paste Game Design, Overpriced Games, Day One DLC, Overpriced DLC/Season Passes, Seventeen variants of the same game taking up store shelves with the words Special, Deluxe or Gold slapped on the cover, Sexually Harassing Employees and Selling NFT's.

I'm not very confident in modern Ubisoft remembering what made the SC series so great but we'll only have to hope for now. At least they're not changing it into some open world garbage like what people were claiming a couple weeks ago.

Maybe we’ll see high tech remakes of the entire original trilogy… Certain levels and places in Pandora Tomorrow like the rooftop with the searchlights AND mines only visible in heat vision would be really really cool with modern graphics. Even Chaos Theory would theoretically be amazing to see faithfully remade in modern HD with epic environmental effects and whatnot.

Despite the poor reputation Ubisoft has gotten in recent years, I am fully rooting for them to make this an amazing game. They already said they are going back to their original formula for Assassin's Creed: Mirage, and while we have yet to see gameplay of that, I remain optimistic. I have been craving an addition to the Splinter Cell series for a while now, and finally got around to playing through all of the older games. I had started with Conviction and Blacklist back when they originally came out. The rest of the games went on sale at one point, and I bought them all up; after having them installed and unplayed for 2 years, I went on a marathon of all four games. It was a huge change of pace from what I was used to, but it was a great experience. My favorite is now Chaos Theory; the story and gameplay were great. I loved the optional interrogations you could do to gather information, and was disappointed that it was not something I was able to experience in Conviction or Blacklist. I am surprised that Ubisoft did not end up continuing the story with the new characters they introduced. Maybe they are too attached to Sam Fisher to let him go? I can understand that; he is a great character, but they didn't even decide to tackle the conflict with Voron and Kestrel; he was so cool in Conviction and I would have loved to get another chance to play as him. I know there's Blacklist Aftermath, but I can't exactly play a book now, can I? There's a lot of naysayers already preparing for a shitstorm of a game, but I really think Ubisoft will pull through. In any case, we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I see this as the best case scenario for more SC. Blacklist was okay, but weightless feeling movement, drones, and expanded arsenal was way too much of a departure from the originals for my taste. Remakes of the originals is the only scenario in which I could realistically see them dialing any of that back.

Considering the state of modern games, remakes are great. I prefer that they try to recreate something that is great, rather than doing what they've been doing. Hopefully, they'll learn something during the process. It could be great if they add new paths. I hope they significantly deepen some of the levels. It will allow fans to get something new out of the game. They should definitely remove the need to interact with any people but the main targets, even if it requires the player to take a more difficult path. I'm still waiting for an S.C. game that can be played without ever contacting anyone in the A.O. (at least, except for ones that the game tells you about.) They need to add the sound meter (with the ambient sound level.) Adding the O.C.P., the E.E.V., and some other gadgets would be nice (especially, the EEV.) Whistling is silly; I would rather have a knock or something, but jumping and sprinting are almost as good. Blacklist's cutscenes were very annoying. It's bad that they made the gameplay faster but then slowed down the game with the cutscenes and a horrible airplane hub. The original cast would be great. Sam's actor in Blacklist was horrible. A PVP mode would be nice, but that should be tacked-on after singleplayer and cooperative play. I want to see them add some new missions and a cooperative campaign.

I think a lot of people are still confused by the term remake and remaster. A remake means they are redoing the entire game, that comes from levels, movement, plot, weapons; a remaster is a simple touch-up. This is not going to be the same game that you played growing up. This is the same fundamental idea with the mindset of being made again 20 years later, with the strengths and shortcomings kept in mind throughout development. I myself will most likely buy the game when it comes out, but I will be extremely cautious of it. I hope that this comment ages poorly and we maybe get to see a new title that doesn't fall short. However, I am fairly confident that they will not be able to surpass the original title. All I honestly could ask for is a remaster of the old titles, and is all I have ever really wanted from Ubisoft for Splinter Cell. Especially support for Chaos Theory with having P2P so the community would not have to rely on VPNs to actually play together.
