I was very fortunate to have met this man! I was a medic at the Air Force Academy Hospital when Colonel Olds, leaving Vietnam and being promoted to General, was in the hospital for his annual flight physical, being re-assigned to the Air Force Academy as Commandant of Cadets. I was sitting at the console monitoring the heart rates and rhythms of our cardiac patients when General Olds strolled down the hall, stood at the door, and asked me for my permission to enter! I respect this man!

It's thanks to men like Robin Olds, Dick Winters, David Stirling and many others who were able to think outside the box which ended WW2 when it did, and didn't drag on for another 3 or 4 years. Those men as well as those who did not come back are true heroes and we owe them a lot. Living in a time where it's fashionable to hug your enemy I'm very glad they didn't otherwise I would be writing this in German. May God Bless all you guys!!!

I was honored to serve with Gen. OLDS in 1967-68 it was the best year that I ever had while in the AIR FORCE HE was the best MAN / Commander that anyone would want. This Man would stop and chat with you when you were working on any aircraft like he wanted to help I had him stop in the Airmans club on new years eve and buy beer for the whole place.he ate christmas dinner in the chow hall with all . Just A Great Man And a friend to all.If you want to see him just visit the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson A F B in Dayton Ohio he is there and his plane is there also.It broke my heart to leave that base 1 week before he left as i can feel how the party went down.[I know HIM it was very humbling R I P SCAT. We will meet in the sky..SSGT BELL

Col. Olds was always one of my heroes. I am an artist and I have done his P38 many times. When I went in the Air Force back in the 60s the motto of the USAF was "Peace is our profession." Col. Olds would always say "Peace is NOT my profession!"

The best fighter pilot this country ever produced. He didn't have the highest number of kills but he was a leader of men of the highest caliber which undoubtedly led to higher numbers of kills overall. What a man.

The Greatest Fighter Pilot in History. He never got the kills some did, even though 17 is a lot! But it was the way he adapted that makes him the greatest. He was a warrior through and through, no matter what war he fought in, it could have been the American Civil war, a modern day war, it doesn't matter, his warrior spirit would have always shone through. I believe he's that good.

I was just a Buck Sergeant, and here he was, a General, asking my permission to enter the nurses's station, and asking me about my duties! Wearing his blue patient pajamas and his blue and white striped robe, hands in his pockets. Ask me about his Confidential medical record! I had a Secret Security Clearance before I was assigned to the Air Force Academy Hospital. A triple ace! I met him! He asked me for my permission! General Olds is a true American hero!

....and my Dad confirmed what Gen. OLDS is talking about compressibility when he (my Dad) was a logistics manager on the docks in Sydney , Australia...and remembers climbing up on deck shipped P-38s and looking through the canopy of one, noted a plaque on the instrument panel "DO NOT DIVE THIS PLANE OVER 600mph"

My late great Dad was a C-121 navigator & its possible (still researching) that his 552nd AEW&C/College Eye squadron...and possibly his actual plane, (now on display at Wright Patt museum) was flying radar direction/support on Olds' Operation Bolo in 1967. Also, my late great Godfather was an RAF Commodore working with dad on supersonic fighter/missile science stuff at Pentagon in the early 60's while Olds also worked the same wing if not same office. I think we need a feature film on the life of Gen Olds, heroic warts and all. It would melt wokeflakes and scare Gillette advertising execs but sell a million tons of popcorn.

Sad to say that's the fate of quite a few warbird owners.... their aircraft outlive them. You can rebuild a machine but unfortunately can't revive the dead. ********* :Love the P-51 design but my favorite WWII fighter design is still the P-38J/L series. ********* Goes without saying Robin Olds was the quintessential American fighter pilot. Never saw a video clip where he didn't impress me!
