Briggs & Stratton compression release issues on Craftsman riding mower 18.5 Intek

18.5 Intek compression release not working, ordered a Chinese cam of Amazon and used the compression release off of it instead of replacing the entire cam, talk about the issues with after market cam

This happened on my tractor, what I did to bypass it was I would take the air filter off of the intake and press the palm of my hand over it to choke it and it typically would fire up.

I wonder if connecting a jump pack to the battery to increase the amperage going to the starter would work if you spun the engine backward as far as possible before hitting the start key. People say blocking the air intake with your hand will work, since rotational inertia will overcome the compression, once the engine begins to rotate. That is my plan after mine fails, unless the pieces destroy the engine when it fails. I will try the jump pack boost second, since it might destroy the starter gear.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Wish you would have shown how you moved the compression release from one cam to the other but I understand it was probably delicate and once it was done you didn’t want to take any chances. A- video overall.

Thank you! It was my first time doing it wasnt sure how to go about getting it out, be delicate and it will slide out for you, i sold mower to a friend he said its still working great

Some people think that if the compression release is broke, you can still get them started and use them? No you should not run them that way. There are pats floating around inside the crank case that could cause more damage to the motor.

Awesome that solves the issue ok thanks much. Well just in case your in a bind and have to have that engine running like fast ..hears what I did ..I took the battery out of my jeep , picked up some short battery cables bolted them right on to the tractor cables , connected the jeeps battery rather than the tractor battery and this has enough amperage to spin the starter and start the engine with no prob. But that was just me due for a good paying job that required my tractor.

I hook up a battery charger and set it to 20amp crank mode. You still have to fiddle with moving the pulley back and forth, and make sure the gear on the starter is down and has a chance to spin up before it engages the flywheel.

How did you remove the new Comp. Release off the Chinese cam? I've got the problem right now. I pulled apart my parts mower engine and pulled the cam...same numbers stamped on cog and the lobes. Issue is the old does not have oil filter and new does. I can't just swap the cams. I need to do a release swap like you. Need help.

Oh man i wish i could remeber, i think i very gently worked it out with a flat head, pushed it out sure did, just looked at old one

Pushed the dowel pin that holds it in, kinda twiested flat head between the cam lobe and pin for compression release

It seems like repairing this, will just lead to it breaking again. It's a bad design. If it broke before, it will break again. I'm not about to tear my engine completely out of my mower and apart to do this. There has to be a better way. One video shows a German guy clogging the air intake to stop compression, and that's fine, if you can easily get to the air intake... mine you have to disassemble too much. I'm wondering if a spark plug could be designed and modified with a value and a pull wire made out of nonconductive material that could solve this G.D. problem for everyone. Because Briggs and Stratton obviously aren't stepping up.

Mine looks like the same engine but is a craftsmen 18 hp intek ohv any parts i look up are under Briggs so your part would probably work on mine i think their the same engine just a different name

But see the oem camshaft isn't the best if it was it wouldn't have broke i believe name brand and cheap brands are both made at the same place so im gonna use a cheap brand then if it breaks again I'll take apart again
