Important!!. Follow the evaluation steps carefully. I skipped the check for the BUMP on the intake valve (as was explained very well in the video). The mower was doing exactly what is typical of the "broken compression release". Locking up on trying to start.... I ordered a new cam and disassembled the mower. To my surprise....cam was good. Spent the weekend with the project. Cleaned everything, put it back together, adjusted the valves and it runs great....I'm pretty sure that the intake valve was out of adjustment enough that the compression release wasn't opening the intake valve properly while trying to start. At least I now have a clean mower that is running great. The video was excellent, and helped with disassembly and reassembly. I hope this may someone like me that often jumps to conclusions during the diagnosis.

I had a mower that was very low on power, I checked the valve adjustment, was shocked it had over 50 thousand clearance on both valves. I adjusted the valves, it ran better than it had in years, unfortunately it started blowing oil out all over the place. Took the engine apart the top compression ring broke in 3 places. I replaced the engine, a Briggs 12.5 horsepower with a Kohler V twin 25 horsepower. Runs great now

So I just pulled mine apart because it didn’t have the bump but cam shaft compression release still looks in tack. Came shaft wasn’t lined up with the dot either. Well I got a new one on order so we shall see! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I am helping out an elderly gentleman with a yt3000 craftsman with a 21hp platinum engine. The mower does not want to spin. Gets to compression stroke and stops. I took off the valve cover and removed spark plug. Turned mower by hand. Moves freely. Valves move up and down. I did not notice the little bump in the intake valve. Looks like a bad camshaft. Your video was excellent. Now I can tell the gentleman what the problem is and he can decide if he wants the engine fixed. Thanks for great video. If I need to tear into the engine, your video will be used as reference. I hope the internals are not to bad. Thanks a bunch!

I would like to ask a question on something I'm not clear about. I have a twin cylinder. Checked it today and no blip on the intake valve. Set the lash to .004 and started seeing the valve blip open. Set the lash the same on the other head but no blip. My question is, Does it only decompress on 1 cylinder? Thanks again.

Thanks man, great video. I've never taken apart a mower engine so your video was my guide. I didn't see the "bump" so I decided to tear into it and sure enough, the compression release thingy had a broken stud and separated from the camshaft. It really is an easy job if you take your time, keep tools and parts clean and organized, and make sure you get OEM parts. Don't get the cheap stuff or you will be doing this job again. The motor is not that heavy and comes out pretty easy so don't be intimidated by this job. Thanks again!

Thank you sir! Great video instructions, it helped me do this same job on my B&S 33R877-0009-G1 engine. Being my first time digging into an engine for a job like this, the video helped a ton. A few general notes to help others: -torque spec for the 10 crankcase screws was 18 ft-lbs for my particular model -take note (or mark) of the position of your throttle cable before you disconnect it from the clamp, it will help you when re-assembling when the job is done -the spring that was mentioned in the video when popping out the oil seal is integral with the oil seal, not a separate component. That confused me at first but made sense when I popped the old one out. Your new oil seal will have a spring assembled into it so you don’t need to re-use that piece. -all-in, job cost $130 in parts (new camshaft, crankcase gasket, and oil seal) and about 6 hrs (close to 2 hrs spent cleaning off the old gasket and cleaning/washing down the engine with brake cleaner)

I have a generator that takes about 35 pulls for it to start. I've noticed it gets easy to pull just before it starts. I'm guessing it's the compression release's spring has broken and after 30 pulls it swings back in place and lifts the exhaust valve to release the pressure and then the generator starts. It runs great once started. So that means the compression release is still there unlike the engine you're showing. Thanks for posting this!

I had a 12.5 horsepower Briggs on a 40 inch cut that was very low on power. I readjusted the valves. That made a very noticeable difference! The valves were way out of adjustment. The problem was, about 30 minutes later it started blowing oil out all over. In about 5 minutes it nearly emptied all the oil. On tear down, I found the top compression ring was broke in 3 places, the cylinder was wore by over 15 thousands. I do have to admit, the mower had been used hard and long , too hard and too long. I wound up putting a Kohler V twin 25 horsepower engine on it. Best mower I ever had. Just one thing if anyone wants to try that the biggest problem was coming up with a pulley to drive the mower blades. I could have used an electric PTO, instead I used a piece a PTO ,the lower part and had the 3 parts welded together. I had a machine shop do the welding, that bottom pulley runs true. That was the major problem. The rest was easy, even the engine mounting plate was pre drilled and pretty much a bolt on. Ok that's an over statement, the exhaust was easy except I now have duel exhaust instead of single.
