Thank you very much for posting this video. In 2014 I bought a z255 “ Briggs & Stratton” from my local John Deere dealer. My father bought the x320 “ Kawasaki” Both have 22 hp 48” deck. If my grass would get to long the z255 could not mow it my father would have to come over with the x320. Long story short, the last time I mowed I could hear a loud ticking much worse than normal. After watching your video I popped the valve covers off and the intake valve push rod had fallen completely out.. the lash on the others was .010-.017. I don’t think the right cylinder has ever worked properly. You saved me from spending $5200 on a new Gravely can’t thank you enough.

It's a fantastic repair and it's explanations at every point along the way along with multiple tests demonstrate his Top notch professionalism. I always enjoy watching his repairs and seeing him go through a logical process to make an accurate repair. The point that he doesn't make which is important for people to understand is the value added nature of an independent repair shop versus the dealership. The prices are normally lower and the mechanics are far far superior. But you gotta find them and they are always not available. Dealerships are normally a problem from both a cost and quality standpoints, in my years of experience. Great job!!! 👍👍👍

I see the battery hooked up backwards causing the starter to spin backwards often, otherwise likely a bad starter gear

Take the hood off & crank the engine while watching the starter & gear. It should be spinning up to engage the flywheel. We recently had to remove our starter, put a new gear in, and all good. You can order just a replacement gear rather than the whole starter & gear.

My John Deere E170 quit running after 10hrs. The last time I used it, it ran for about twenty feet and never ran again. I replaced the battery and nothing. Unfortunately, it was at the beginning of COVID and it sat for two summers. I contacted John Deere to see if they would cover the warranty and they said it would have to go to a John Deere Dealership to diagnose it the engine had moisture in it and the engine was ruined. This was something I thought was basically impossible since the lawnmower had always been kept in a storage building. Plus this didn't explain why it quit running after 10hrs. Since we were still making payments on it we went ahead and spent $1300.00 for a new engine, so far so good on the new engine.

I dont know much, but am trying to learn. My machine has very rough mid and high power . I first found bad gas and dirty tank. Removed the tank, ran new lines, new siphon line, gas check valve,changed filters, plugs, and replaced fuel pump and carburetor . Took off cylinder covers and set valves to spec....still haven't put them back on and tried to see how it ran. So every video I see about a Briggs & Stratton that turns slow has the valve adjustment in front. I have an old Montgomery wards 18 hp twin with the carburetor in the front and there is no place to adjust those valves that I can see. The engine turns over well without spark plugs but tends to stop at the same spot which sounds like compression. Do these older Briggs engines have the decompression? Model is 422707.

So, mine is doing the hanging up thing. But when its not doing that it'll just keep turning over and not start. I have checked the fuel system all the way to the carb and i have a good fuel supply to it. Havent removed the carb yet though. But it will start if I give it a little shot of starting fluid and it will keep running. But I definitely don't want to be doing that too many times! Could the turning over and not starting issue be because of My valves? Or should I clean the carb and then check the valves if it's still doing it? Thanks for any info you can give me!

I know this seems crazy, but you might simply have an airlock going on between the fuel tank and the fuel filter. Can you visibly see a sizable amount of fuel in the filter? You might want to remove the filter and then go to your fuel tank, remove lid and then take a big breath of air and blow in as hard as you can (be careful). Your fuel tank lid might not be letting air in. Thats another reason for running a bit then stopping. Good luck.

I guess could happen sense this Kohler courage sv725 wiring is all messed up from the person i bought the sst18 from im just gonna run a straight muffler pipe from left to the right side pipe weld that together and weld a muffler on i wonder how long the other person used it without a muffler they just cut off the rectangle part of the muffler and left short pieces on on the engine its enough to weld to I'll have to do a little front weld on each side then unbolt it off the engine to get the other sides welded up

I'm thinking the dealer was just lazy. I hope they weren't trying to soak the customer for a camshaft.

I really hope that is the case also. Unfortunately this is about the 5th time in the last year seeing a similar thing happen from the same place. Thanks for watching!

Most of the jd small engine mechanics don’t know much of anything period, I’ve had a lot of there jobs in shop and I’m disappointed with what they charge and still didn’t fix it, but customer learning now

@@markb8954 I have always loved the Simplicity line but even they are starting to make them differently and cheapen everything up. Look for something with all the features you need and if a possible option go to the Kawasaki engine

On one hand, I find it a little bit weird that you don't know why the dealer quoted would have quoted how they did for that repair. On the other hand, if you don't know, you don't know and there's probably a reason for it (and I dont mean that in a negative way). So usually the customer will drop a machine off at a dealer and want a service special (different names for it, but a yearly service). The tech discovers an issue that the customer may or may not (usually not) have mentioned. Rather than spend time (because time is money) figuring out exactly what the issue is, they will figure worst case scenario as best they can. In this case, given it's a Briggs and they have a nasty habit of cam failure, they quoted for the cam being replaced. They would have tried adjusting valves first and if that fixed it, half hour labor and everyone moves. If it didnt fix it, they've already quoted for the cam replacement and they can proceed with that without having to get the customer back on the phone and try to explain why the valve adjustment didnt work and so on. I always try to give both scenarios and what it will cost both ways and let the customer decide. If it's just one of those things that you won't know until you get into it, then I tread lightly with an estimate and get them agree to an hour of labor for me to get into and then go from there. It can also depend on the service manager/service writer. Sometimes they do a bad job of quoting things. But again, with it being a Briggs, it's usually a safe bet that the cam has failed. But as easy as a valve adjustment is, I'll squeeze that in and fudge my time a little bit to make sure before I start quoting things. But everyone is different.
@IndRepair Жыл бұрын
I normally give customers the full deal before doing anything. I'm pulling a valve cover before quoting a very expensive repair every time. Four bolts, two minutes and I have real answers. With only 200 hours on the machine, no way I give them the $1,300 quote (what dealer quoted) without further investigation or talking to them about all the possibilities. I know we all have different processes just think anyone worth their salt would have taken the time. Thanks for watching!
