The cylinder head likely needed cooling fins but since you have almost completed your water cooled version that's an even better idea !

With your overheating issue I would look at keeping air cooled but make it more efficiant. Look at more powerful cooling fans and mayby a oil cooler for the engine oil. Everything helps. I'v seen Deutz done a similar thing to their engines and they run for ever. Keep up the cool videos to, your a true engineer and many can learn from you.

Definitely add an oil cooler. I don't think those muffin fans are flowing enough. An off the wall idea is to float the existing cylinders in water. I don't know if it is possible to make a watertight compartment around them.

A "quick" way in getting to watercooling could be weaving copper pipe in between the cooling fins. Each cylinder would be connected in parallel to in and out from the cooling. Not as effective but maybe quicker.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
That was on my mind but there is only space for a "brake pipe" . Not enough.
@Fix_It_Again_Tony Жыл бұрын
What if you milled all the fins off the heads and make some aluminum blocks to bolt to the flat surface that remains. Or just make water cooled heads. You could try it with just the heads and only move to adding water jackets to the cylinders if necessary. It's only a half dozen HP per cylinder.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
@@Fix_It_Again_Tony I think the cylinders are in greater need of cooling than the heads. The heads are just a lump of metal, no moving parts. As long as they doesn't melt.

7:28 Instead of rebuilding the entire motor, I have an idea. There are plenty of water cooling blocks readily available for computer processors, video cards, etc. Couldn't you buy ten or twenty of those and bolt them to the existing engine? That way you'd get the benefits of water cooling, but without all the hassle of remaking the cylinder heads.

How hot is hot? I would try bigger electric fans.

Of course that would be a more simple solution. But I want to see if I could make it watercooled. It's easyer to control the temprature.

@huzudra Жыл бұрын
I think maybe just water cooled heads would be enough to keep temperatures under control or even just partial water cooling of the cylinders. You could experiment wrapping some aluminum or copper tubing around the cylinder of a single engine between the fins to see how much it affects running temperature, it could be enough cooling that it would work to have coils of tube around the cylinders between the fins, not in series but in parallel. Running the pump will be interesting, could be variable speed electric with flow based on water temp or fixed speed belt driven mechanical.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
No, I don't think cooling just the heads will be enough. Ther are no moving parts in the heads so they can get as warm as they want. In the cylinders I have a moving piston and moving valves that needs lubrication. And no oil works well over 150 dgr C. So, cooling jackets on the cylinders and heads with an electric pump. If it's not enough, just put in a bigger pump.
@huzudra Жыл бұрын
@@Desmouffe Yes I understand the flat heads have no moving parts but they are well attached the hot cylinders and do sink heat from them, with a large enough gradient heat will move to the cooler head from the hotter cylinder below it, but perhaps you are correct it would not be enough. Since most of the combustion happens in the head potentially a lot of heat could be pulled out up there as the heat made by compression is fairly small and the expanding exhaust gasses are losing heat as the piston goes down. Just a thought on possibly an order to do things in that could be easier and might work 'well enough' to overcome the issue. :-)
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
@@huzudra I think the cylinder head gasket will make it more difficult for the heat to move up in the cylinder head. I have had cooling problems with all my engines so this time I want to do a proper job. It's a lot more work but that's what keep me going. I think it´s fun.
@huzudra Жыл бұрын
@@Desmouffe Look forward to seeing the results and design process. Using a copper gasket could help with heat transfer from cylinder to head. Do you think a mono-head approach or doing individual heads? As for the blocks and cylinders perhaps it could be built like a Mazda rotary where the blocks stack next to each other with bolts to compress O-rings between them to seal in coolant. It could be made modular, a V10, a V12, limit is only how long the bolts and crankshaft can be.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
@@huzudra Yes, a copper gasket would work but my mind is set on full water cooling. Working on the wooden models for the mould right now. The cylinders will be made individual and stacked together. The heads will be one common for four cylinders, split in two so I can make channels for water.

Looks like cooling fins are going in the wrong direction for it to cool properly. Water cooled might have to be a must. Maybe make each individual cylinder it's own water jacket instead of making all new stuff. Oh, since you making stuff, the cam could use a little tighter lobe separation. Make it say potato, LOL.

Model boat engines use water cooled heads and they work fine. Would be a lot easier to make
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
It shurely would. Have to look in to that but the cylinder/piston are lubricated by oil, and oil over 150 dgr C don't work very well.
@paulheitkemper1559 Жыл бұрын
why have that fan on the back? if you aren't directing that air over the cylinders, then it's just robbing power from you. you could turn down the blades on the lathe, leaving the rest of the flywheel.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
It's a flywheel and I want the rotating mass. The fins are not helping me but right now it's in balance. On my radial engine I did the mistake to have a flywheel with not enough mass so I left it as it was. And I also had the choise to make some kind of shroud around that fan but that did not happen.
