As someone that sells fishing tackle this is pretty much the same technique I use to recommend gear. It works from low-end to high-end gear. But you would be surprised how often people are unable and to answer these questions.

Great vid briggsy have been done the same road 30years ago cheap tackle is cheap tackle get the rite setup and or confidence grows with it I brought a abu 2500c in 1989 had to save forever to get it matched it to a browning sikaflex 4to8 lb rod and caught hundreds of bass on it the outfit is still in perfect working condition 🍻👍

Bloody love it mate, in the UK my "heavy" setup is a 7-28gram! Medium being 3-15, light is 1-7 for saltwater. We just don't have the fish you get. I'm so jealous. Biggest reel would be a 4000, down to a 1000 for the light stuff

For me briggs Rock- top water/bait/soft plastics Beach- bait surf rod/soft plastic For my medium set up i use either a sienna 5000 or a daiwa luxel 5000c The rod i use luxel rod i believe its 7 to 7,6 foot rod. I run 50lb on medium On my big rod i can't even remember what i use😅 Ive caught some fucking good fish on my big rod but i cant remember😂 I live in Adelaide, so we dont have all these insane GT and Maccy hook ups of the rocks lol, im hunting a 100cm kingy

And something I'd love to point out is that we have so many questions about tackle because there is such an overwhelming offer of brands and models out there, even if you know what specs you're looking for you have to many options, especially if you have a budget that is not allowing to go for the few high end options (that's a small fraction compared to low to medium segment) Frothing for the GT video! ❤

Hi Mate, if you have many options I'd say you have to go feel them. Your hands on feel and comparisons are crucial for choosing your setup, without it you're relying on other peoples word or technical specs on the internet. Hands on feel is what should make the final choice because if you don't like the feeling of your setup you're not going to put in the 100s or 1000s of casts to get that big hook up! You want to love just winding your reel and tweaking your lures, regardless of hook ups and in that regard everyone has different taste in gear. So I think hands on feel is the ultimate tool if you're overwhelmed with options. For the reels I send them off if they need a service but otherwise just tighten up the drag and rinse them under the shower.

I live in the northern us about 16 to 20 hours from the ocean. Freshwater fish around here only get big and crazy in the great lakes (really cool fishery but you apply similar gear theories as you would to saltwater) but if you dont have a boat you normally dont get many opportunities to hook big fish besides musky, salmon/trout when they run up the streams to spawn, carp (yuck), catfish (dont see many ppl catching big ones unless they are targeting with proper gear anyway) and sturgeon (very rare that you hook them). Mabye one day ill make a trip out to Australia and have a chance to fish down there.

Anyway i say all that to say its fun to watch these even though its useless to know what gear you use. Its really cool to see how much targeting fish down there differs. The price points for freshwater are much much different 😅 a vanford is considered really nice cream of the crop for spinning gear (besides stuff you can buy thats frankly overkill for most freshwater) and my 7'0 tatula medium is pretty much a nice do it all setup in terms of rod. Shit, even my stradic is pretty premium feeling compared to the walmart bought reels a lot of ppl put up with. Sure i have friends that buy the nice megabass, st croix top end, diawa g lumis shimano etc but its all overkill especially as a mostly bank fisherman who isnt realistically catching more than a 30 inch pike most of the time. If i had money and space a boat...shit id probably have 6 setups by now. But its stupid to carry that many around hiking to seldom touched low pressure waters. Anyways, love all of the content, hope to see more in the future!!!

Briggsy thank you for sharing all your tips and tricks. I've learned so much from you. If you had to choose between a H or XH reel gear which would you pick and why? I want to replace my 2015 Saltiga 4000H for a 2023 6000. Here in the US our only option is XH in the 4000-6000 size. In your opinion is there much difference on how it feels when your winding other the it picks up line a little faster.

Hi Mate, I always go the fastest possible especially when using smaller reels, it takes less cranks to work your lures which is just nicer over long spinning sessions.

Just curious on your thoughts. I see a lot of people on youtube consistently using daiwa saltiga, saltist, etc for spinning reels. What do you think about higher end models of Penn spinning reels like the slammer or authority? Ive personally used a 10500 spinfisher with 500yrds of 100lb power pro usually for anything of major size, if not a everol for anything bigger than 500lbs. Anything under 100lbs i use a much wider variety but i tend to stick budget wise to penn for 100-500lbs.

Even before sponsors though I would always spend the extra coin to get top shelf reels, If I'm going to be casting all day I want the experience to be super enjoyable even if I'm not catching anything!

Hi Mate, underwater I shoot on wide and 200fps. Out of the water 25fps super or hyper view. For both, protune on, and the main setting to change is white balance to 5000k (otherwise on auto, the colour will change constantly). I shoot on a few other settings like low sharpness and iso max 400, high bitrate but they’re not necessary in most cases.

Could I ask how much line you managed to get on your 23 Saltiga 6000 and 4000? Was it exactly 300m of PE 3 and PE 2 respectively? I've had quite a fair bit of space left when i spooled only 300m of their respective lines...

Hi Mate, with all my reels I put some mono backing with an FG to the briad, so that if it gets down to it i have a bit of stretch and a knot in the mono to the spool that wont slip. Because of that it fills the reel up a bit before I even start with the braid. I also put PE2.5 on the 4000 so still had some left on the spool when the reel was full, the 6000 though even with the mono backing took the whole 300m and wasn't 100% full. I'd say it could have taken another 25m or so? My idea to fix it was the next time I spool i'll put a little extra backing. It wasn't so under spooled I was worried it wouldn't cast well or anything like that but yeah prolly like you just wanted to see the line flush with the top of the spool.

Land based longer rods boating shorter rods its not rocket science depends more on the fish your targeting really to the gear you will need . Set your drag before you fish is more important than anything to get that fish to your feet if you have to piss around with your drag when your fishing your gonna loose the fish . Definitely take light tackle as well 👍 if the bangers aren’t on fire there’s so many light tackle options. Prolly more PE2-3 setup though and 80mm-140mm stickbaits, divers and poppers, there’s bulk, good size spangled emperor that are super fun. You should bring a PE1 setup too for the plastics and try to catch some of the wrasse and Bream 👍 I’m jealous mate! Hope you have a rad trip!

Hi Mate, I had a MC works belt, served me well over the years but I've stopped using a belt the last couple trips (I think I dropped some hook ups when trying to get the rod into the belt and would always be a bit to eager to get the rod in there instead of really making sure I'd set the hook first), so far so good but yet to hook a GT beltless. Hey Briggsy! Thanks so much for the informative video. I was wondering if you use some backing before you spool on the braid! Got a certate SW 6000 coming my way with some PE3. On my smaller reels I usually do this, as it is a bit cheaper and it can prevent the braid from slipping, but maybe for this setup it might be better not to in case you hook a big one! Hi Mate, yeah I always put a little mono backing on all my reels these days, I think if you hook something massive and it gets right down to the spool the mono will hold a lot better than straight braid

On your leader spools, you have some sort of elastic material allowing the spool to not have a cover, but holding the line to the spool. In the US I have been looking for these. I've had to resort to rubber-bands (which suck because they melt to the leader on hot days). What are those elastic things called. Maybe if I get the proper name I can find them easier online.

Haha here’s what I use for 50-80cm flathead Aaron… 7’ 2piece 2-4kg rod 2506H reel PE0.8 125m 6lb fluoro 70SP minnow Now to be more specific… My partner caught a very fat 60cm flatty 1 week ago on: TD Black Drunken Monkies II 702ULFS 0.5-6g 1-3kg TD Black MQ 2000S J-Braid x8 Charteuse 10lb 150m 6lb fluoro Smith Panish 70F Rainbow Trout with lead tape on its belly between the trebles to make it suspending. It is a shallow diving minnow. 3.7g I use these types of setups for: 40-80cm Flathead Up to 45cm Black Bream Up to 60cm Silver Trevally (Can literally get spooled 😂) Up to 6lb Australian Salmon (destroy the hooks) Up to 55cm Tailor. Just fish on the calm days and everything will be way more safe and enjoyable! Then there's ABC "Always, Be, Casting" you gotta have your lure in the water to hook up so keep breaks to a minimum and cast your heart out. Test your drag before and make sure it's not to tight or loose. And definitely learn and practice your knots to a high level, losing a fish because of something you can control isn't good. Gotta put in the work and get your knot game up!

Hey Man, always wondered why all you Ausies chose to Saltiga over the Stella, I fish in South Africa and Mozambique for Tuna,Gt,Wahoo ext and I chose the Saltiga 14k over a Stella and do actually prefer it but the Stella is a lot more popular here in South Africa

I can't answer for all of Aus, and take this with a grain of salt because I'm sponsored by Daiwa, but from what I understand the new Saltiga's technically are in a league of their own and most people have caught onto it over here in Aus. Personally I've just always loved Daiwa reels and even before working with Daiwa I wasn't attracted to the Stella in the same way. Both land fish though so prolly comes down to the marketing in each country, word of mouth and current and past trends.

tbh i like penn personal preference don't mind daiwa but dont use shimano for gts and lower penn authority 9000 or 15000 for 700 is expenceive for some but keep in mind are you intending to use for long time or short time same as overheads you can use full metal like tic 30 to 130 or penn my advice do you research on the gear 1rst i use 5000 slammer 3 for small 1500 slammer for big 50wisw for sharks 50visx =50 narrow for ballooning sharks can use for marlin and tuna now after 7to 8 year using a 50 just got 80visw for big sharks and marlin dogtooth and tuna n swords tbh though don't start 80 50 or lower for beginner

Briggsy how do you decide what leader you can run on a rod? Just need to make sure it'll clear the guides? Minimum amount of room in the guides with a leader in there?

Hi Mate, it's a bit tricky. I know now from looking at the guides roughly what leader will work and what will catch/bang on casting. It's not that it gets stuck, usually more the knot bangs a ton on the way out and you tend to get more guide wraps/wind knots etc. A loose rule would be doubling the recommended PE, so PE4 rod should be able to handle 80lb leader but that's super loose, some rods just have way bigger guides than others so you kinda gotta see the rod in person to suss it (or know your line and guide measurements well and read about those dimensions on the manufacturers website (if they give them)).

Hi Mate, nah I don't have it anymore. I tend to just keep the setups I need and when Daiwa sends me a new piece of gear that replaces something then I pass the old gear on (even if it's not that old), usually to young fellas or other fishos who could really use it and it'll have a big impact on.
