I loved that projector. Great features and picture for the price point. Biggest thing between that model and newer models will be the lack of 4k resolution and image brightness/color spectrum. Still has a great image though. I had no issues the 3 years I owned it. I liked using the carls place flexigray or flexi ALR screen materials. I have a few videos on those screens as well. If not wanting to go DIY route, Elite Screens has some great affordable options

So I think I’m owed a 33ft ruipro from this channel. Stay with me here. Finished building my dual stereo integrity HST 18 subs to be run off a Simbosen FP20KQ, and went to run the speaker cable underneath my built in projector shelf. It’s about 30” through the wall to get the other side. I figured it would be easier to buy and use a long auger bit instead of my usual drill a hole on each side and fish through with a wire hanger. So I start maneuvering the long bit in a tight space and drill right below the projector shelf. Working my way through and it just starts to feel weird and sound weird. Stop drilling and go observe my handy work. I guess I went at a bit of an upward angle, bc I came through the bottom of the projector shelf, caught the ruipro fiber cable which twisted it around the bit and ripped the connector off. Not my best moment, and had to go back to my old cable. But had I not seen the sub builds on this channel, then I don’t go and build my own, which means my cable would still be in tact. Let’s just be thankful, I didn’t hit the projector itself. Missed it by just under two inches. Sure my Bass is next level, but now picture is all “unfiber opticky”.
@LifeofBliss3 жыл бұрын

Great review...I would appreciate your thoughts on which one you'd prefer. In a dedicated completely dark HT room would you say the JVX NX models are better than these UST's? With the price almost double do you think the JVC's are worth the price difference? Thanks.
@LifeofBliss3 жыл бұрын
Hands down, if you are in a dedicated room, do the jvc or similar higher end projector. These USTs are cool, especially in living room environments or if you are unable to run a traditional projector. But you will get a much better image from that JVC. Black levels, reflections, speaker placement, screen size (in some cases) are all short comings of these USTs. There is a strong market for them, but I still think a JVC would be much better in a dedicated room. Plus you are able to who with a much larger screen size if you have the space. This benq is limited to 120 inch or just over that with its lens.

That Elite screen is nice. It would be great to do a comparison or alternate ALR screens with different budgets. Pros/Cons of budget, Marginal price/ Elite Screen. How does this compare to your Carl's DIY? Also, I appreciate the videos. Thank you sir!
@LifeofBliss3 жыл бұрын
This particular alr/clr screen is the best I've seen so far. It's specific for the UST projectors, so wouldn't really be a fair comparison between it and other ALR screens for traditional projectors. In a similar setup with the carls place and elite screens ALR screens I've had, this outperforms it. It'd take a lot of screens and setup to do a true comparison like you are talking about. Maybe one day...

Kyle, I had seen your screen comparisons over at AVS quite some time ago, and followed you here. I have upgraded my projector since, but am having a terrible time deciding on my screen upgrade. I've been seriously waffling between white and the cinegrey. I do need a little gain to improve my brightness, but the added contrast of the grey has my attention. The ALR would be a great solution, but I am terrified of the hot spotting/ image cone concerns. Looking forward to receiving my cable, as my birthday is this weekend.
@LifeofBliss3 жыл бұрын
I'll be sure to reach out for your address once your comment is drawn 😉 so the ALR actually was very impressive. I had the elite screens alr for months in my old place. It is comparable to the carls place. Honestly... if you have some ambient light, want that added contrast, and need a little extra gain, try out that alr material for carls place. I only noticed sparkles in extremely bright scenes. Like all white or a bright white/blue sky. It wasn't distracting unless you were looking for a reason to make it. After wood and material, you'll probably be at under $200. If you really don't like it, you can use the same frame, cut the alr off it, and use the cinegray or cinewhite. Luckily that material is cheap enough that replacing it if needed isn't going to set you back much. Good luck man!

Dang! Missed this giveaway - Darn YT algorithm did not suggest this video when you posted it, man (LOL!). 😀 Anyway, jokes aside - as I have said before, appreciate your videos and was looking forward to this video after watching the last video you did with this projector and screen. Wondering about rainbow effects with this projector. I am quite susceptible to rainbow effects and was able to see it right away while watching Revenant (fight scene at beginning as it transitions from dark to bright) while helping a friend set up the (older / not Chroma) Vava projector. The older Vava uses single laser technology but I have read the newer DLPs using triple laser (such as this one) are either less susceptible or might not have the rainbow effect. I understand rainbow effect varies from person to person but was just curious if you could share you experience? Also, wondering if you could comment on image quality comparing this projector + screen combo versus in your older video with the overhead projector + Carl's place gray screen. I know that was in your old house and you are unable to do side-by-side comparison but was curious if you might describe the difference in the two setups as "night and day difference" or was it more "noticeable but evolutionary"? I already have Epson 1080p projector that we planned to install in our basement (and have also done the in-ceiling wiring for power and cables) but am quite tempted with the UST projectors and flexibility they offer (love Epsons since no rainbow effect but cant say I am fan of the LS500 design with lens sticking up). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, man and keep up the awesome work!
@LifeofBliss3 жыл бұрын
There will be a few more giveaways, don't worry 😉 Rainbow effect... its there for me when I blink and move my head, if that makes sense haha. Only during bright white scenes when I'm trying to look for it. I honestly don't notice it besides that. I have to be blinking quickly and trying to notice it. As far as my last setup vs this... the blacks were deeper with the last PJ and screen. These USTs are hard to get great blacks. That's the only downside though. Colors are much brighter, went from 1080p to 4k, which was a very noticeable difference. Very happy with the upgrade, though I am missing the larger 120 inch screen vs the 100 inch I have
@topperdude20073 жыл бұрын
@@LifeofBliss Thanks as always for your honest feedback. I totally know what you mean about the "move your head and notice the rainbow effect". Although in my case, I don't even have to try to look for it - which is why I feel I must be more sensitive than others. I agree about the increase in resolution between 1080p and 4K - I noticed it right away at my friend's place with his Vava Gen 1 and comparing with another friend's setup using a 1080p Epson. But can you guess which viewing experience literally gave me a headache (LOL)? 😀
