Today, I'm listening to Bright Eyes' tracks "The City Has Sex" and "The Difference in the Shades" (Alongside the 2021 companion versions) from their 1998 LP "Letting Off the Happiness".

Al's Vinyl Collection is my way of sharing my passion with the world. I welcome all, if you're an avid Vinyl record enthusiast or just a passer-by, come and sit with me for 15 minutes to talk about the golden age of music. A civilised format from a more civilised time.
I do not own rights to video, I do not wish to monetise the video - I just want to react to it to bring entertainment and enjoyment for those watching.

I cannot wait for Fevers and Mirrors. When I tell you it BLOWS this album out of the water i mean it, and I think all Bright Eyes fans can agree with that

Justfou D your reactions. I can agree mostly with what you said about The City Has Sex. I've been a Bright Eyes fan for about 20 years now and it's never been a song I seek out of theirs. I think one thing it does have going for it that gets lost in this context is that it really stands out musically and tonally on the album and helps provide a bit of something different when listening to the album straight through (which when I looped the CD back in the day is how I would listen to it) which I always appreciated. Keeping in mind all of these songs were written when he was like 15-20, which astounds me. But The Difference in the Shades has always been a favorite of mine. Great reactions, looking forward to more. Hopefully you did some stuff from Fevers and Mirrors, it's my all time favorite album.

Another great reaction. Love the honesty in your reviews. You wont like them all, perhaps you may not like quite a few of them especially early on in the discog and thats fair. I tend to agree with most of your critiques as I go back and relisten after not hearing a lot of these in a decade plus. It's a fun ride to experience them again after so long with you.

yesss pls don't try to sugarcoat your feelings and thoughts since that's what initial reaction videos are all abouttt lolol I do have a bunch of issues with a good chunk of the Companion versions tbh (altho I mostly really like the ones for these first two albums), and yeah I agree that the vocals of City Has Sex Companion didn't really do it for me and also the slower tempo feels weird to me because I really like the high intensity of the instrumentals from the original version hehe. Difference in the Shades Companion is wonderful though! Kathy With A K's Song is actually from split EP that Bright Eyes shared with Son, Ambulance called "Oh Holy Fools" (which I recommend if u wanna check that out as well!). The placement on the Letting of the Happiness Companion is a bit odd because Oh Holy Fools came out after Fevers and Mirrors but maybe they thought the song would fit better on this one? :o As always excited for more! :D really loving your analysis and honestly expressed opinions!

So happy to have you back :) Great reaction as always! Your analysis of The Difference In The Shades is fantastic, and I totally agree re: The City Has Sex Companion version. I love June on the West Coast, but I otherwise think the second half of the album is weaker than the first half. And you are right that one song per companion is a cover :) Also fwiw I personally appreciate it when people give honest critiques so I don’t think you should worry about being honest when you don’t like something. I think your critiques are spot on 😊

Agree with pretty much everything said. Also I just noticed the name of the commenter. I’m sorry I promise I’m not following you. It’s just…. Bright Eyes! I really hope Al sticks through the whole discography.

@@asmahism Haha us BE fans gotta stick together 😂 And agree! I think BE albums get progressively better through 2005, and even post-2005 they continue to improve in a lot of ways. Down in the Weeds is one of my all time favorites.

@@thecaitlinator4035 I agree again! DITWWTWOW is maybe my favorite BE album now. Back in the dark days (2005/6) Fevers killed me but time moves everything and while I still love it, it doesn’t keep me going like it used to.

I need to build up a little more strength before tackling the wall I think 😂 The length being longer than the previous three I've listened to have made it strangely daunting!
