RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! In the intro, Alex is simply using a volume pedal. He strikes each note with the volume off and quickly ramps to full. It gives basically no attack on the note, no pick sound, and is ethereal and violin-like. You can do this by wrapping your pinky around the volume knob on the guitar as you pick, but in a song like this a pedal is a must. Many wah pedals will double as a volume pedal as well.

@@mightyV444 excellent example! I couldn’t think of any when I made my comment. I think Eddie hammered most of the notes with his left hand, so his right was totally free to run the volume knob. Add a little delay and you get some Eddie magic.

You can see it clearly in the 'Eruption' live video which also loads of channels have been reacting to; None of them so far have noticed he's not actually picking the strings, though. And only two guys so far have noticed Alex's swift switch from the 12-string to the 6-string in _this_ performance 😁

Hi Al! Simply the greatest example of how well these three monster musicians can multitask and still be so damn tight! Alex has his 6 string and 12 string and also plays Moog bass pedals (especially at the end). Geddy plays bass, Moog pedals, keyboards, sings, and his 12 string at the end. Of course, Neil has an entire orchestral percussion section surrounding his monster kit. Simply astounding - many people find this live version superior to the studio version, I amongst them. Alex's 12 string tone was almost bell-like, Geddy's vocals are on point, and Neil just kills it.

Rush songs are just like that. You get 2-3 songs in every song. Its dramatic and drastic and a hell of a ride for every song. This song is a modification of the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge written in 1797 and published sometime in the early 1800s. Compare and contrast rhe two pieces. You will enjoy them both. Fun note: I was in my 8th grade English class and we were doing literature and this poem came up. I skimmed the poem, called Kubla Khan, before it got read that day and kind of burst out, "hey! This is a Rush song!". Nobody knew what in the hell i was talking about. It was 1980. I was already listening to Rush for a couple of years by then. Everyone else in my class was listening to pop. I was the only one in my class listening to them, and therefore i was the only one who thoroughly enjoyed music on a much higher level than my peers. Cheers!

I think that Rush's greatness, particularly in their early work, was their compositional discipline and creativity. The quality of their difficult music - beyond their virtuosic musicianship - with repeated and interlocking themes, and the complementarity of their individual parts, was unrivaled in rock. Go back and listen to how the drums enhance and accentuate Alex Lifeson's guitar solo near the end of the song. Brilliant! I suggest that if you've not already done so, you react to "La Villa Strangiato" (studio version from the 1978 album "Hemispheres"). It is another great bit of Rush compositional genius.

I was thrilled and privilege to have seen Rush that year (1981), a truly memorable event permanently embossed in my memory. In my opinion Rush aren’t just a brilliant, ultra talented band but are a global phenomenon in their own right. They themselves are also a separate story coming together as they did (I’m only including Lee, Lifeson and Peart) here. The early, uncertain beginnings, a strident Record Company, Public indifference, financial pressures. The not so successful Caress of Steel ( although I personally love it) to the astounding break through Album 2112, all history now but always worth a mention , Superstardom, Global acclaim and glory rocking there from. I ADORE Rush, I believe we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for all they did, achieved and gave. RIP The Lyrical Master and Drum God Neil Peart, a humble Mega Star if ever there was one

One of their masterpieces masterly done! Progressive Rock is similar to classical music in it's time changes and tempos. Alex and Geddy have been best friends since they were 13 and have been playing music together since they were 16 and are still best friends today. They have great chemistry together on stage. As others have suggested 2112 would be an excellent choice. Either the lyric or comic book version to get the complete storyline. Always enjoy your insights. Cheers 🇨🇦

‘81 Neil did not have electronic ANYTHING . All those percussion sounds are real orchestral instruments. This is a MASTERPIECE ! I would have to agree...although, I carve out a special exemption for Side 3 of All the World's a Stage...with that unhinged extended version of By-Tor and that unprecedented rendition of In the End. That would be my favorite live performance of any band ever, except there does not appear to be any film that exists of those versions of By-Tor and In the End...which makes me a bit sad. 👍😁

@@number9434 Yeah...that medley is pretty terrific...but there is nothing else that Rush has recorded that is as unhinged, psychedelic and reedonkulous as that ATWAS version of By-Tor...and In the End was just the perfect capper. It was Rush WITH Neil but they had not even started to attempt moderation...it was a moment when they were all just using every skill and technique they had all learned playing together, and gave not a single thought to self editing of any kind...it was Rush at its most extravagant and effusive, musically speaking. At least that is they way I see it.

They are ALL ABOUT transitions. They change between moods, melodic themes, time signatures, tempos, chord progressions, etc. The crazy part is that, unless you pay cvlose attention, you cane sometimes miss them because they are so smooth and play together so tightly. Neil's drum kit is simply crazy- everything from wind chimes and wood blocks to tubular bells, gong, and a set of toms that make drummers stare in awe, Alex plays 12- and 6-string guitar and pedals, and Geddy, besides singing plays bass, 12-string guitar, and keyboards, foot pedals, often 2 or 3 at a time... mind boggling!

Geddy plays a 1977 Rickenbacker 4080/12 (12-string guitar on top). It was modded with a Badass bass bridge, and humbucking pickups in the guitar. Alex plays a Gibson EDS-1275 (12/6) with a coil-split switch for the 12-string side. He’s using a volume pedal and a delay (echo) to get the swell effect in the intro. Side note: Geddy also had a 4080/6 on this tour, white with black trim. He used it on A Passage to Bangkok.

Technically though, 'Bangkok' wasn't played on the Moving Pictures tour so the white 4080/6 was basically a backup and was only used on the Permanent Waves tour. The version of Bangkok you hear on the ESL album was recorded in the UK during the Permanent Waves tour a year earlier along with Closer To The Heart, Beneath Between Behind and Jacob's Ladder.

Xanadu is based on an unfinished poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge called "Kubla Khan" (happens to be my favourite poem). I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching your reaction as I like seeing people who clearly have some level of expertise react as I do not although I enjoy a wide range of music to be sure. Your appreciation for the talent of these three men was apparent in your face and it looked like you truly got a kick out of this epic piece. Thank you for the wonderful reaction. This is a great performance by master musicians. It is also a perfect example of an intellectual (Neil Peart) writing a song, based on an unfinished poem written by a famous English theologian, philosopher, and poet. Neil was well known for writing about things he had read. That is why you should never skip the lyrics of a Rush song. They are not typical of rock. Each song's lyrics is worthy of study and analysis. They are the words my life was built on.

Lyrically and musically the song is intertwined in telling the story of the protagonist search for immortality. The song is based on a poem by Samuel Coleridge. The moral of the story is be careful what you wish for, since the protagonist after finding the secret to immortality, has out lived the human race. The ending of the song reflects the countdown to the end of the world.

Not many know that Alex had an "oopsie" during the intro when he transitioned to the little riff from the "violin tone" (fade-ins w/volume pedal) and his tone was not what was expected, plain. He can be seen fiddling and staring at his board, trying to figure out what happened. When he plays it again at the end of the song, that's the full chorused tone that was supposed to come out the first time. Later he missed a switch and nearly the transition going from the 12 to the 6 string. Geddy can be seen gaffing on him about it before the 2nd verse.

Really enjoyed you comments. Its always fun seeing someone discover the Rush Rabbit Hole. If you get the chance listen to their 2112 album from 1976. Rush was about to be dropped from their record label early in their career because they didn't write songs that translated well onto radio. So they were told to write more commercially acceptable songs. ie catchy toons 3 to 4 minutes long. Their answer was 2112. A 20 minute song on side one of the album. They figured if it was going to be their last album they would just do it their way. Needless to say it was very successful even though it was not radio friendly. From that point on the band had complete creative control and the rest is history. So once again, you gotta listen to 2112.

I mean, there’s no timpani. Without timpani, not a complete orchestral percussion section, right? Dang near everything else though. Geddy's doubleneck is a Rickenbacker model 4080/12 which is a 4001 4 string bass on top and 12 string guitar on the bottom. Yes, it is indeed a 12 string which a lot of people tend to get wrong because they can't see all the tuners. Rickenbacker crams 12 tuners on that small headstock. There are 6 on the back of the head in standard fashion and 6 on the sides of the head like that of a nylon-string classical guitar. The paired strings are wound onto pegs in slots cut into the face of the peghead. That's how Rickenbacker makes almost all of their 12 string guitars.

Hey Al, you've become my favorite reactor. I could listen to your voice all day and as a bonus I get thoughtful and intelligent commentary. You're right - you never really know where Rush will take you. I am one of their 3 early female fans (a running joke with the band) and I saw every tour from 1974-2015. Here is a general overview of their career as I experience it: Prog epics are a staple in their early work, but are phased out after their amazing Hemispheres album. In the 80's they started exploring other directions and getting IMO a little too "synthy" and even threw in some rap, but still delivered amazing music. Starting with Counterparts in the 90's, the heavy sounds returned (Neil has said he thinks he did his best work on this album). After a break from 1997 to 2002 (due to tragedies in Neil's life) they released a new studio album Vapor Trails (which is some one Neil's most personalized lyrics) and then Snakes and Arrows in 2007 which I feel is well balanced and excellent - I absolutely love many of the songs on that album (Spin Drift, Far Cry, Main Monkey Business). Their last album is a Steam Punk concept/story album that rocks hard. The last song, The Garden, will leave you in tears. You've inspired me - I've never written so much in a comment. P.S. As a budding music engineer, you can find many good interviews with Terry Brown who produced several of Rush's albums.

The constant changes are because they are a progressive rock/metal band. They were the most incredible, amazing, talented band to come from this great country of Canada. But they are done now with the passing of Neil in January of 2020 due to brain cancer. Alex and Geddy have vowed not to continue Rush out of respect to Neil, the man behind those amazing lyrics. A drummer writing the lyrics to their music! How many bands does the drummer write such amazing and thought provoking music! Anyway, love your reactions. The smile on your face is priceless. I hope you haven't gone away. I noticed you haven't posted in 7 months. Hopefully you'll be back to do that 2112 reaction (pronounced "twenty-one twelve", as in the year). It will blow you away. Well, how about we try a Canadian band that has been far more popular than Rush in Canada? It was called The Tragically Hip. The band was active from the mid-80s to mid-10's. It ended because the band's irreplaceable front man, Gord Downie, died from the same brain cancer that would take Neil Peart a few years later. The band made 13 studio albums, so there's no shortage of material from which to choose (and every Canadian has their favourites), but I'd suggest starting with these five: New Orleans is Sinking (1989) Fifty Mission Cap (1992) Grace Too (1994) Poets (1998) My Music at Work (2000)

The pedal Alex is using is a Morley volume wah. He's using the pedals volume mode to control the volume output so as to get a string-violin sound. Jimmy Page used an actual violin bow, Eddie Van Halen used his guitar's volume knob and Alex used the Morley. It doesn't reverse the sound.

Alex is using a volume pedal to get those guitar swells. He picks the string at zero volume and gradually turns it up with the pedal.

Alex's pedal is a simple volume pedal. Turn the volume off, pick the note, while it rings turn it up. Jeff Beck did it with his guitar volume instead.. same concept either way.

Geddy was playing a double neck. But his had a bass on top and a six string guitar on the bottom. In the end of the song Alex was playing the 12 string and Geddy was playing the 6 string and not the bass. When Geddy started playing an instrument at first he chose a 6 string and learned that first but when the band was formed they needed a bassest so Geddy switched to bass. Geddy can play a 6 string guitar well.

Geddy's doubleneck is actually a 12 string guitar on the bottom. There are 12 tuners doubled up on that small headstock, 6 on the sides and 6 on the back.

If you look close and get his guitar bases on top, and there’s a six string on the bottom. Watch the video he never goes to the bottom guitar. It’s all for show. Alex has a double neck get he’s got a double neck. Also, Alex‘s guitar is a six string and a 12 string, and he uses both of them.

With much of Rush stuff you have to think symphony in several movements. Look up Kubla Khan by S. T. Coleridge, this is what the Rush piece is about .

If you haven't heard them yet, Animals as leaders quickly shot up to my number 3 band of all time, Rush being forever number 1. They are super progressive and masters at what they do and they're all instrumental. The Brain dance would be a great one to start with. Its a good one to ease you into them as they get pretty intense.
