I admit to plant envy when I see English gardening shows. We live in zone 2B to 3 in sheltered areas. Winter colour has to be hardy evergreens and the odd bit of interesting bark. Berries usually don’t outlast the overwintering birds as winter food can be in short supply. The one winter colour we can usually rely on is white; great banks of cold white snow.

@@irishelk3 Hi, I don't know what that letter means, but, no, he doesn't not take them out in summer. These are year round plants. He's focused this area on having a nice show in autumn and winter, but the plants will be there year round, possibly with some spring/summer blooming flowers added in.

I don't care how colorful and bashful a plant is in winter, if it's cold and/or wet, I'm not enjoying any of it even though I love gardening :/ For me, it's all about warm, dry and sunny summers

Haha, I've been thinking a lot recently about the idea of "winter interest." Where I am, southern Connecticut, winter interest means evergreens, berries and bark, all of which are the mark of a "good garden" with "winter bones and winter interest." Not knocking that at ALL. But lately I am thinking it's OK to have a lot of bareness in the winter. It is winter, after all! (Or course, in the UK it's warmer in the winter than northeast US. But if you don't want to have a winter garden, don't enjoy being out there in the cold and wet, I think that's fine!)

I really don't see Cylamen or ferns or most of those flowering plants living through a cold winter.

Depends on the climate zone. How cold does it get in your area?

@@pattimcq8062 Yes, I'm in 7b, and those ferns and flowering plants (except maybe the the hellebore) are gone by sometime in late October, early November.
