This hymn was inspired by a story that a preacher shared about ships coming into harbor on Lake Eerie. Though they could see the light of the lighthouse, there was still a high risk of shipwreck navigating the narrow inlet without the aid of the lights (the lower lights) from the villages along the shore. Beautiful imagery - the Lighthouse = The Savior, the Lower lights = us.

Jon Cornwall Thank you so much for this imaginary. I must confess it can when I realised that the Lord may not be coming as soon as is currently assumed. I was devastated because I so much want to be Home with The Lord. He gave me this song and said “is it worth waiting for them poor struggling seaman’ and save them” This just blew me away and I said Lord it is worth even a thousand years to wait for one struggling soul who is trying to ‘make the harbour’. He wants and longs to be with us much more than we do beyond compare. So I shall live one day at a time and wait for His perfect time, for He is always perfect, never too late, never too late. In the meantime, may He grant us the grace to let our lights burn, so we can be the light for those in darkness, because this is the whole purpose of waiting. It about souls, directly or indirectly.

Thank you for the background story of Mr. Philip Bliss’s inspiration to write this song. Let the Lower Lights be Burning... On occasion, Mr. Bliss would travel with Moody and be a participant at his meetings. One time Mr. Moody was telling the story of a shipwreck in one of his messages. On a dark stormy night, a large passenger boat cautiously edged toward the Cleveland harbor. The pilot knew that he could only find the harbor channel by keeping two lower shore lights in line with the main beacon. "Are you sure this is Cleveland?" asked the captain. "Quite sure, Sir," replied the pilot. "Where are the lower lights?" he asked. "Gone out, Sir!" was the reply. The pilot turned the wheel, but in the darkness, he missed the channel. The boat crashed on the rocks and many lives were lost that night. Mr. Moody's closing words were, "Brethren, the Master will take care of the great lighthouse; let us keep the lower lights burning." At the next meeting with Mr. Moody, Mr. Bliss sang this song... Let the Lower Lights Be Burning. It was published in 1874. It is said that this was the favorite hymn of Billy Sunday. The timing of this post - February 7th 2012 was my 61st birthday. It was the 57th anniversary of hearing the first sound in my life on my fourth birthday, February 7, 1955. In February of 2012 my first of two Cochlear Implants was activated and like the 61 years before those hearing aids 61 years before in an ear that that stilled in 1988. The second one was in February of 2014. Like my experience in 1955, my success with Cochlear Implants was phenomenal. With a microprocessor under my scalp and amazing algorithms the reproduction of sound, synthetic, is phenomenal. Thanks for making a deaf man's evening musically beautiful.

My dear Donald Lively, yours is such a wonderful and heart warming story. Thank you for sharing it here with us, and welcome to the ranks of those of us who appreciate beautiful music especially acapella singing, with as great a choice of hymns as this is, helps us each to find our inner spiritual self, to hekp us feel close to the Lord, and to feel that much more in unison with our fellow man (and woman). Music is the goodness of mankind brightly beaming with the light (and sound) of our heart for the Lord and all others who desire to feel, hear, marvel and share. I am so happy that with the miracle of cochlear implants, you too can hear and enjoy this beautiful music. May your life be long and may you find joy in every day.

Donald I heard this song for the first time last night. I had my first cochlear implant activated last year in November, and I was hearing music really well - just not a whole lot of bass. My second ear had been deaf for 46 years, since the age of 3. I just had the second cochlear implant in that ear activated 2 weeks ago. It's still early days - just hearing sounds (no sense of what they are just yet). But someone on a Cochlear Implant discussion posted a link to this video. The bass in the new ear is just amazing - I can almost feel the bass singing in this song in my head. This is just amazing to me - God has blessed me deeply in hearing this video. @JamezCase - strange that your video seems to be touching the hearts of CI recipients.

A soulful song and yes very real call to the hearts of those who had for years kept the lower lights burning showing a channel to safety. Before modern instruments were common on these working boats. Heading back from fishing and needing to get safely through to home and family, the plea to be able to see the lights along the shore to be able to make safe harbor in the storm. The lights could be placed close together with one broader opening between lights to show the safe passage, while the light of the lighthouse might warn larger ships from up high to stay afar from the rocks. The singing is done so well. It makes known the plea of the small boat and its skipper's possible peril and dependance upon friends and fellow brothers to keep the lamps burning. I first heard the song sung by an Alaskan fisherman from a family line of commercial fishermen. The song touched me then and this song touches me now the way it is sung by this group.

When I first heard this song, I remembered back in 1973 and 1984 when I lost my way and could not find an answer, but then Jesus Christ, sent the Light for me to see - I saw the Cross of Calvary where Jesus alone died to atone for my wretched sins. I know that, compared to His Righteousness I am a worm unworthy of His Grace and Mercy, and I could never escape His Majestic and Unlimited Love. But in humble contrition and deep mourning repentance I surrendered to His Presence and Holy Words in the Bible which says in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all sins." "Please Lord Jesus, let the lower lights be burning for a poor struggling soul, bring her or him home to Your rest. Thank You Jesus. Amen."

Lyrics: Brightly beams our Father’s mercy, From His lighthouse evermore, But to us He gives the keeping Of the lights along the shore. Refrain: Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave! Some poor *struggling, fainting seaman You may rescue, you may save. Dark the night of sin has settled, Loud the angry billows roar; Eager eyes are watching, longing, For the lights along the shore. Trim your feeble lamp, my brother; Some poor sailor, tempest-tossed, Trying now to make the harbor, In the darkness may be lost.
