Join us as we take you on a journey through the historic Brighton Hippodrome, which opened its doors to the public on August 30, 2024. This open day offered a rare opportunity to explore the rich history and architectural beauty of one of Brighton's most iconic venues. From its origins as an ice rink in 1897 to its transformation into a variety theatre by the renowned architect Frank Matcham in 1901, the Hippodrome has hosted legends like Laurel and Hardy, The Beatles, and Harry Houdini.
Now, thanks to the Lambor family's ambitious restoration project, the Hippodrome is set to become a vibrant cultural hub once again. Scheduled to reopen in May 2026, just in time for the Brighton Festival, this venue will offer a flexible performance space while preserving its historic charm.
In this video, we take you behind the scenes of the open day, featuring live performances, guided tours, and insights from the Save Our Hippodrome campaigners. Discover the progress made in the restoration, including the repair of the roof and the preservation of the building’s intricate Rococo embellishments.
