Today, me and the boys ride a Class 313, the oldest EMU on the National Rail network, from Brighton to Seaford!

These things used to serve all the (currently) Overground lines except for the Goblin (class 150 ran on those) and East London line (was still ran by LU at the time with the A60 stocks) when Silverlink was operating on those tracks. Then they were replaced when Arriva Rail London and London Overground took over. Was sad when they were gone, then was extra sad when they were also replaced with the 717s on the Northern City line. I'll never *NOT* like these "ol' reliables".

I wanted to do the same this year, I'm from Germany though so it needed some advance planning.. only to find out that they'll be withdrawn in May and earliest I can travel would be July. Really makes me sad I missed them, I do like to travel on routes and trains that I have played in Train Sim World aswell ;) An eerie familiarity with a place you've never been to is a great feeling.

I first heard of the Seaford Branch because of the Video 125 Video about the East Coast Coastway and Marshlink routes. The Seaford Branch was filmed from the cab of a 3 car class 377. I remember Jonathan Kydd, who narrated, said of them, "surely, the most luxurious trains ever to ply the Branch,"

Brilliant video Nick, this route was once my local route when I was living in Brighton, my local station was Moulsecoomb. The Class 313's will be missed when they are gone, I'm glad that 313 201 is getting preserved. It's also a good thing that the weather was sunny and not wet as it was forecasted to be.

Apparently that's been changed now - it's Network Rail's 313121 that's been designated because it's closer to original condition

Shame you didn't get off a Bishopstone, really does have a epic view from the footbridge and a impressive Station building. Other than that it was a great video. Shame the Class 313s will be going but honestly nothing last forever, also 313201 apparently is not being preserved now as it doesn't have any original features.

I think Lewes must be one of the most well to do places in the country. Once when I had a little time to spare while waiting for a train to Seaford myself, I remember looking in the window of a shop selling kitchenware and seeing an item described as not only microwave and dishwasher safe, but also 'Aga safe'. hmm...

I guess this is one of the 313 that operated on the Watford DC line for many years. Started life operating out of Moorgate I believe. Replaced slam door SR like trains.

I did this same trip back in October 2022 on 313 206 and after getting back to Brighton an RHTT came in and I was allowed to look in the cab of 73 109 also I recently heard that 313 201 is no longer being preserved but I don’t know for sure

The Reason Why The Train doesnt stop at newhaven harbour (Formally Marine) is because Newhaven Harbour is a rundown station with a derelict platform that has a parliamentry style train that pulls into the station for 5 mins and then comes back out to avoid closure, the platform is fenced off by the tracks and the "Shelter" Above It Is Crumbling 4:08

Newhaven Harbour and Newhaven Marine are different stations. Newhaven Marine, now being closed, is a glorified turnback siding for trains terminating at Newhaven Harbour (at the time of writing) but there’s not many trains that even call at Newhaven Harbour in the first place because it’s so close to Newhaven Town and doesn’t even serve the port!

The limited weekday service for Newhaven Harbour was only done in 2020. Before that, Newhaven Harbour got the regular half-hourly service, and still does on weekends.

If you're talking about break of journey then yeah. Most of the time, if your ticket is not an advance single, you're allowed to break your journey on the way to your destination.

Matt, all 3 are equally beautiful. In reality: according to British Railways Board's "Vehicle Diagram Book No 210" their bodyshell dimensions are identical. Perhaps there are internal (motors, connectors, etc) differences.

@@caramelldansen2204 The 507s were built as 3 coach units where as the 508s where built as 4 coach units. The 508s lost there 4th coach to the 455/7's. The 313s are Dual Voltage EMU's. The 315s are AC OLE 4 coach EMUs, the 314s are 3 coach AC OLE EMUs, the 507s and 508s are both DC third Rail EMUs.

I do wish the Youth of Britain would stop using the Americanizm (US spelling intentional) "Train Station" it's a railway station. Sad that the 313/507/508's are going (and that the 314/315's have gone) in my childhood and teenage years they were the height of modernity with power doors and for someone who grew up on what they now call 'Heritage DMU's and loco hauled stock in the Mid 1970's around West Yorkshire and the TransPennine routes. These PEP units were massively modern when we used them around London and SE when we moved South in 1981. (Mostly 508's and slammers back then. God I'm old!- 51yrs and 11 months!) In fact showing my age in the immediate pre Eurostar era 1993 to 1994 Newhaven Harbour ( and Newhaven Marine now closed) was still many a rail and sail preferred route from Victoria to Paris with the chance for four hours sleep on the ferry to Dieppe.
